Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. ODONI\TELL, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT-HANGER AND BOX THEREIE'OR.
all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. OD0N- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers and Boxes Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment hangers, and particularly pertains to im rovements in receptacles for hangin an carrying shirt-waists and other wearing apparel.
The object of this invention is to provide a combined garment hanger and box-inclosure therefor, consisting essentially of a sheet of cardboard, or equivalent, cut to provide a handle portion and garment-supporting shoulder portions, in conjunction with a box having a slit in one side to pass the handle, and means on the hanger to support the box without allowing the box to rest on the garment which may be supported on the hanger.
A further object is to provide a garment box or envelop which may be readily carried and conveyed from place to place and in which the Weight of the garments therein will be supported directly on a handle and not on the wrapping or inclosing portion of the receptacle.
Another object is to provide a combined garment hanger and foldin box therefor, made wholly or in part of which the garment or garments are hung upon a hanger and afterward inclosed in a box or cover to protect them from soil, and which is so constructed that the hanger and garment thereon may be hung up or carried without removal from the box, and without the weight of the garment or hanger being supported on the box, but in which the box will be supported on the hanger, thereby saving the box from considerable wear and tear.
Another object is to provide a garment package and hanger of the above character, which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture, strong and durable, and which is convenient to handle and use.
The invention comprises a garment hanger or support having a hand-hold attached thereto, and a box adapted to receive the hanger and slotted to receive the handhold of the hanger and allow it to extend therethrough to form a handle for carrying or suspending the box and its contents.
The invention consists of the parts and the Specification of Letters Patent.

construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the garment hanger detached from the cover.
In the drawings A represents a sheet of any suitable material possessing the desirable qualities of rigidity or stifiness and lightness, such for instance, as cardboard, fiber-mat and the like. This sheet A is stamped or otherwise shaped to form a garment hanger, as particularly shown in Fig. 3, with its upper edge rounded at the corners as indicated at 2, and over which upper edge a garment such as a coat, shirt-waist, or similar article of wearing apparel, may be hung. Formed on the upper edge of the sheet A, midway between the rounded corners 2 is an upwardly projecting portion 3, which is perforated at to form a handhold 5, and on the side edges of which ortion 3 opposed outwardly extending pro ections 6 are formed.
The projections 6 are disposed below the perforation 4 and above the top edge of the sheet A, and form shoulders, the purpose of which will become apparent hereinafter. The handhold 5, projections 6, and the portion 3 are reinforced by gluing a suitable fabric over their surfaces and around their edges. A horizontally extending slot 7 is formed in the sheet A at a point adjacent itsv upper edge; this slot 7 being provided for the reception of such garments as trousers and the like, which are inserted in the slot and allowed to hang over the lower edge thereof.
The sheet A is designed to be mounted 1n a box of any suitable description, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; the box being here shown as consisting of a bottom 8 having sides 9 and ends 10 integral therewith, and a cover portion 11 having inwardly extending s1de and end portions 12 and 13, respectively, which are extended over the sides 9 and ends 10 of the box when the cover is placed thereon, as shown in Fig. 1.
- The box and its cover are preferably made of paper or similar material and can be constructed in any well known manner commonly employed in manufacturing paper boxes, the essential feature being to provide the upper end 10 of the box and the upper flange 13 of the cover with corresponding and registering slots 14 and 14, through which the handle 5 on the sheet A of the garment hanger may be inserted, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, to form a handle by which the box and its contents may be conveniently carried or hung up.
In the application of this invention, the
garments are placed upon the sheet A of the hanger as before described; certain garments being hung in the slot 7 while others are hung on the upper edge thereof. The hanger is then placed in the box with the handle extending through the slot 14, as shown in Fig. 2; the projections or shoulders 6 acting to limit the extent of outward projection of the handle 5, and at the same time forming a support .for the box when the handle 5 is employed in carrying the package or suspending it from a hook, or the like. By positioning the shoulders 6 above the upper edge of the sheet A, notches or spaces are formed therebeneath, into which the collar portion of a garment extends. This construction insures the box being supported clear of the garment. The cover is then placed on the box with the handle 5 extending through the slot 14', as shown in Fig. 1, thus effectively inclosing the hanger and the garments thereon. The cover and the body of the box may then be fastened together by tying with string or in any other suitable manner.
Any suitable device may be employed for locking the sheet A in the box against inadvertent removal or displacement. The means here shown for this purpose comprises a pair of tongues 15 formed on the handle 5, one of which is folded against the side of the handle when it is inserted through the slot 14, and afterward straightened out so as to extend beyond the ends of the slot 14 and contact the ends of the box in such manner as to prevent the handle 5 being withdrawn therefrom. The slot 14 in the cover is of sufficient length to admit of its passing over the projections 15 on the handle 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A package for garments, comprising a box, a removable cover portion, said box and cover formed with registering slots, a garment hanger, and a handle thereon adapted to extend through said slots.
2. A package for garments consisting of a garment hanger, a handle thereon, a box adapted to receive the hanger, a closure for the box, said box and closure formed with slots through which the handle on the 1anger extends to form a handle for the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
