Dawir'r o. cooLaY, QFWILKESBARNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 109,387, dated November 22. 1870; antedated November 9, 1870.
IMPRQVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHlNES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom -it 4may concern..-
'Be it known that I, DE Wrr'r U. Cooney, ot' thc Borough of Wilkesbarrc, county of .Luzerne and 'St-ate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and nsoful Improvement in lashing-Machines for Washing Clothes and l (lo-hereby declare that the .following is a full, clear, and exact description ct the construction` and operation of the same, reference heilig had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specifieation, and being a perspective view ot' the cnt-ire machine, with the side ot' the ends-box broken awa y so as to show the interior construction and combination of the several parts of said machine.
I construct said improved washing-machine in thc manner following, to wit:
In the suds-box A l. place the rotating-beater which is constructed ot' alternating blades Z '11, projecting, say, the saine length as theirwidth, made ot' ,strips ot hoard cnt' cam-shaped, as 'b b, say, by cutting the projecting .ends to a quadrant, by a radius equal to the width ot said blades.
The cam-shaped edges of the blades, onV the opposite sides of the beater, are reversed to cach other, with alternating spaces between the blades.
lhe heater is mounted, and revolves on a shai'tand'v crank turning in boxes at thesides of the sinds-box.
The vertical oscillating wash-board or roller-frame G,'hy' means of the projecting trunnions c c, is pivotcd through the upright vibrating arms d d at a height a little above the'lcvcl ofv the beaterLsha-tt, and so as to allow the trunnions to more baci: and torth treely` over the sidesof the suds-box.
Said arms (l (Z are pivoted at their lower cnds'to cross-bars e e, joining the legs of the suds-box at the sides near the floor, so as to allow said roller-traine C to oscillate back and i'orth freely, at as long a radius as the height ofthe machine will allow.
The-ends of a cross-bar attached horizontally to the top of the roller-frame C so project, as at ff, as. to catch the upper ends oi' the vertical arms d d, and prevent the roller-frame, at bottom, from swinging further back than in line withsaid arms.
Thenpright g, and cord h, attached to the top of said roller-frame, adjust the roller-traine at any dcsired angle of inclination, when the saine is carried forward against the sides ot' the heater.
By means oi' cords, attached t-o the arms d. d, and running over pulleys, as at i., the cross-bars jj, pivoted to thc cross-bar lc, and moving in th'c slot l, and
vfurnished with the weight m, are suspended, so as to pull forward, by means of' gravity, the roller-frameagainst thc beater.
The rollers of the roller-frame are pivoted in the frame in a curve facing the beater` about equal to the curve ot' the can1-shaped blades oi the beater, and so that the'two fit into cach other, when theroller-frame lbest at thebottom, thus making said has a certain inclined posit-ion to the beater, when the` latter has its blades nearly vertical, and so that the lower ends of thc two-descend to about the same depth in` the suds-box.
The ilo-.iter N, being a piece ot board of the length of nearly the width ot' the suds-box, is pivoted at thc upper -edge in the sides oi the suds-'bo.\*, parallel with thebeatcr, and so thatwheu the sudsfbox is tilled with water, said iloater shall tloat up against the beater,
o n the opposite side of the saine to that of the roller j frame, and at the highest end of the suds-box.
'.lhe said washing-machine is operated, and effects thc washing of clothes, in the manner following, to wit:
'lhe snds-hox ,being filled with water, so as to touch the beater when its blades are horizontal, thc clothes v are placed between the beater and the tloatcr 'N, and the beater revolved, so that 4its lower blades move to-v lward the roller-trame.
The tloatcr N Boats the clothes against the beater, the descending blades carry the clothes against the roller-frame, and press and roll the saine upward, un til-they are carried through to the top of the rollers, and from thence over the beater into the water again in continuons rotation, the tloatcr returning the clothes vibrating arms d vd,'it is left free to adjust itself` to -t-he.
inequalities ot` the thickness of the clothes at the sides, between the rollers and beaters and by means of the upright y' and cord h, the roller-frame, when carried forward by the weight mf, may be adjusted at any dcsii-ed angle of inclination, so as to each the clothes Iollcr-fraine automatic or self-adj Listing; and whereby a double motion is given to' said 1'oller-fi'an1 \,in which it rst moves, as though pivoted at the top, at a point where said cord It is attached, unt-il the projections ff meet theupperends ol' the arms d (l, when itt-altes the motion ot saidarms, and as if pivot-cd at c e, whereby the effectiveness and ease ot' the'process are. much aided inl catching the clothes at the bot-tom, and in passing them in the easiest and most ettective, manner over the rolle-rs, suoli variable motions suffering the cam` faces olthe beater to press, forthe longest time, against the rollers throughout their whole extent that is possible, and relievingthc concussion of the two coming togetl1er,'and the binding at the top, incident to the shape of the two meeting curved surfaces.
'.lhe sides of the suds-box, of the end opposite' the roller-frame, are made higher than the other end, so as to cate-h the clothes as they pass over the beater.
\Vl|en special rubbing is required, the machine can be used for that purpose by oscillating.,lr the crank, as though the same was a lever, occasionally reversing the sides of the beater.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is as follows, 1riz.:
l 1. The rotating beater B, with alternating eam shaped blades wit-h alternating spaces between them.
2. The vertical oscillating automa-tie roller-frame C,
pivoted to movable armed d outside the suds-box, with or without the upright standard g and cord h, or theirequivalents, and furnished with the eordsfi i, pulleys i, cross-bars j j,-and weight m, or their equivalents.
3. The floater N, in combination with the said beater and roller-frame speeied in the foregoing first and second claims.
All ofthe said several claimed parts being constructed substantially, and for 'the use as above specified..
' DE WITT O. COLEY.
