CASTING OF IRON.
To all who 12bit may concern Be it known that I, Isaac ENOOH Lns'rnii, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at &4.- Sandwell road, Handsworth, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Casting of Iron, of which the following is .a specification.
This invention relates to the production of rolls and other iron castings in which a hard surface is required together with toughness in the body or mass of the article to resist heavy loads or stresses.
As is well known a chilled roll, or other casting produced in a chill or iron mold, possesses great surface hardness but is want ing in toughness, whereas a grain roll, or other casting produced in a sand mold, has a degree of toughness but lacks the surface hardness of the chilled roll. It is also known that by expediting the cooling of the metal after casting in a sand mold, a certain chill ing or hardening effect may be obtained.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and reliable means for imparting a hard surface to an iron casting for the resistance of wear, while retaining that toughness in the body of the casting which is necessary for the resistance of stresses liable to cause fracture or breakage.
The invention consists in the combination with a sand matrix, of a metal portion or heat conducting medium which is shaped and arranged to provide between it and the casting a layer of sand of uniform thickness and of the same character as the sand in the remainder of the mold.
Referring to the two accompanying sheets of explanatory d 'awings :--Figure 1 is a d1- agrannnatic sectional side elevation and Fig. 2 a sectional plan of a mold adapted for the production of a roll, in accordance with this invention, for the rolling of iron and steel or other metal. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic section illustrating the production of an engine cylinder in accordance with this invenion, and Fig. 4 illustrates the production of another form of roll.
The same reference letters in the difierent views indicate the same or similar parts.
In the application of the invention in connection with the production of iron rolls as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the mold is produced in the ordinary way, but embedded therein adjacent to the parts at which a hard wearing surface is required in the casting are a Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner ends or portions of the segments are shaped to correspond with the configu 'ation of the portion of the casting to be chilled or hardened, and such portions are covered with a relatively thin coating 6 of sand of uniform thickness. Thus there is obtained a complete matrix of sand with an embedded metal portion which when the molten metal is poured into the mold produces cooling of the casting adjacent to the embedded metal at the rate necessary to give the desired qualities of hardness and toughness. By varying the thickness of the sand covering the metal portion the relative amounts of hardness and toughness can be varied to meet any particular requirement. Further, the size of the metal portion may also be varied for a like purpose.
The inner ends of the metal or cooling segments are varied in shape to suit the par ticular section of the roll to be cast. Fig. at illustrates the production of a roll of different section from that shown at Fig. 1. It will be understood that the metal portion or portions are adapted to coincide with the parts of the casting where hardening is de sired to be produced; the remainder of the mold is of ordinary sand construction. For some purposes the whole of the mold may be constructed from metal. portions having a relatively thin and uniform face of sand. Or there may be combined an ordinary chill mold with any of the herein described forms of molds when a portion only of the casting is required to be of the quality produced by the application of this invention, while the remainder is to be as an ordinary chilled or grained casting. Further, it will be understood that in the production of hollow castings in which the inner surface or a portion of the inner surface is desired to be hardened, the metal portions are arranged with the core of the mold. Thus, in the production of an engine cylinder in which a hard inner surface is required, the core is formed from a metal block (5 having a covering Z) of sand of the required thickness as shown at Fig. 3. The core may be made hollow shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.. In the casting of iron, the combination consisting of a metal chill mold, and a thin layer of sand of uniform thickness on the surface thereof, adapted to contact With the casting, as set forth.
2. In the casting of iron, the combination consisting of metal segments forming a chill mold, and a thin layer of sand of uniform thickness on the surface thereof, adapted to contact With the casting, as set forth.
