.Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. CHAP- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at New Britain, in the county of Hart-for and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Vacuum-Cleaners, of which the following isa specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in tools for vacuum cleaners, and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved tool for vacuum cleaners. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig.4 is a bottom view of the. nozzle. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the mouth piece. Fig. 6 is a. sectional view on an enlarged scale, on the line as m of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a similar view on the line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a similar view on the line as u of Fig. 7. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view onthe line 2 z of Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a plan view on the same scale as Fig. 1 of the blank for the body of the mouth piece. Fig, 10 is a view of the blank, on an enlarged scale, for the end plate of the mouth piece. Figs. 11, 12 and 13 are views of the blank shown in Fig. 9 with certain portions bent tot-heir final position. Fig. 14 is a front elevation, on the same scale as Fig. 1 of a modification of my tool. Fig. 15 is a fragmentary View of certain parts shown in Fig. 14, on the same 7 scale as Fig. 6.
My improved tool for vacuum cleaners comprises a' nozzle 10 and a mouth piece 14 separably connected thereto by means of screws 15. The nozzle 10 comprises a fan shapedbody portion 9 having at the upper end a stem 11 and at the lower end a mouth 12. The mouth 12 has an elongated openshort channel 18 that serves as an extension of the mouth 12 having a passage l9th'at is of substantially the same cross-section as the slit 13 and is 1n registration therewith, and
is provided with a pairof rollers 21, one on rectangular body at the middle and a pair of end pieces 27 at the ends thereof. The
body 26 is of about the same length as the mouth 12 or slightly longer and has a central slot 28 that is of about the same dimensions as the opening 13 in the mouth 12, there being a small portion of the body material between the ends of the slot 28 and the ends of the body 26 in the form of flat bridges 29. The body 26 is bent at right angles along the lines 30 that are in line' with the lateral edges of the slot 28 and which lines are the lateral border lines of the bridges 29. The portions of the body 26 out-ward from the slot 28 and the bridges 29 and connected to the said bridges 29 along the lines 30 consist of a pair of wings and these are each divided into two parts by being bent atv right angles along lines 31 that are parallel to the slot 28 and in the reverse direction from the bends along the lines 30. Of these two parts, the inner parts 32 serve as the lateral Walls of the channel 18, and the outer parts 33 form bearing wings having the upper surfaces suitable for engaging with the bottom bearing surface provided at the lower face 17 of the mouth 12. The end pieces 27.are each connected to the body 26 by a narrow piece of body material along the line 34 of about the width of the bridges 29, the material of which the blank is formed being slitted as shown at 35 outwardly from the said bridges 29. The said end pieces 27 are bent at right angles to the bridges 29 along the said lines 34 and in the same direction as the side Walls 32 of the channel 18. The end pieces 27 comprise each an inner section 36 in the form of a rectangular plate connected by the middle to the body 26 along the line 34 and an outer section 37 extending outwardly from the middle of the outer edge thereof in axial alii'iement with thebridge 29 and of substantially the same shape and dimensions, and which fits in between the opposed faces of the lateral walls 32.

The bridge 29 and the end section 37 have holes 38 that are in registration one with the other-and also with the. hole 16 in the mouth 12 to receive the screw 15. The filler block fills the space at the end'of the channel 18.betweenthe bridge 29 and end section 37 and 'is in abutment with the inner section 36,.and has a'vertical hole 39 through which the screw 15 passes, and a horizontal hole40 for the rivet 41. The rivet 41 also passes through holes 42in the lateral walls 32 and secures.

The filler block 25 also has a threaded hole'42 extending inwardly from the outer end for 20 the screw 43 and which is in registration with .holes 44, in the inner section 36, and 45 in .the end plate 24. The screws 15 are provided on their upper ends with nuts 46 that engage with the upper surface of the mouth 12. The end pieces 27 having hearing holes 47 for the ends of the rollers 21. Positioning pins 48 are provided in holes 49 on the end plates 24' and engage with holes 50 in'the end pieces 27 and serve to position these members relatively one to the other when held in engagement by the screw 43. The shaft 51 is journaled in the bearing holes 47 between the inner faces of'the end plates 24 so that when the said plates are in pos1- tion in engagement withtheend pieces 27 the shaft 51 is positively held inoperative position in the bearings. The cush on portion 52 is made slightly shorter than the space between the bearings 47 so that'whenthe end plate 24 is removed from either end the roller 21 can he slipped along lon'- gitudinally sufliciently to permit one end to be freed from its bearing 47, when the said end of the roller 21 can be brought outwardly and then the roller removed from the frame.
In the modification shown in Figs. 14 and 15 the mouth 12 is extended integrall and the rollers 21 are positioned alongsi e the same. The rollers 21 are'positioned rela- .tively to channel 18 so that the lower end of the latter will be close to the floor and the rollers,21 are also positioned relatively to the adjacent edges 53 of the frame so as to slightly overhang the same, as will be noted in Fig. 6.
