CHARLES S. JAMES, OF JONESBORO, INDIANA.
CHICKEN-COOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 23, 1912.
Patented Aprfi, 1914. Serial No. 721,955.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. James, a citizen of the United States, residing at J onesboro, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Coops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chicken coops for receiving chickens, and has for its primary object to provide a coop of this character wherein a free circulation of air may be had therethrough yet rain or snow will be ex cluded therefrom, thereby protecting the chickens that are housed therein.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a coop of this character wherein the young brood will be protected from rats, skunks and other carnivorous ani1nals,when housed therein and also which will protect the fowls from inclement weather.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a coop of this character which is simple in construction, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chicken coop constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear eleva tion. Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View through the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional View on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate cor-' responding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the chicken coop comprises opposed outwardly bowed side walls 5 which are preferably constructed from galvanized sheet metal although the same may be made from any other suitable material and are secured to front and rear sections 6 and 7, respectively, the lower edges of the side walls being formed with inturned flanges 8 on which rests a removable bottom 9 which in this instance is constructed from galvanized sheet metal and it likewise may be made from any other suitable material. The side walls 5 merge into an inverted U-shaped crown roof 10 and are secured to the extensions 11 on the front and rear sections 6 and 7, respectively.
Reinforcing the ends of the side walls 5 connected to the front and rear sections 6 and 7 are metallic strips or bands 12 which are disposed against the outer face thereof and through the same are passed nails or brads 13 which are also passed through the side walls 5 and engaged in the front and rear sections.
Gut from the sides of the crown roof 10 at intervals thereof and outwardly bent there from are tongues 14: which provide ventilating holes 15, the said tongues 14 being designed to exclude rain, snow or the like from the said openings, yet permitting the free passage of air therethrough to the interior of the coop.
Formed in the front section 6 is a door way 16 on opposite sides of which are arranged guide cleats 17 slidably receiving a door 18 the same being preferably constructed from galvanized sheet metal and has struck therefrom a plurality of tongues 19 forming ventilating openings 20 therein, the tongues 19 being designed to shed the openings to exclude rain and snow therefrom.
Arranged rearwardly of the door 18 is a wire fabric gate 21 which is slidably engaged in the cleats 17 and prevents the fowls from making an exit through the door way 16 when the door 18 has been opened yet will permit the young brood to leave and enter the coop.
Formed in the rear section 7 in the uppermost portion thereof is an opening 22 on opposite sides of which are arranged cleats 23 in which is removably fitted a galvanized sheet metal gate or plate 24, the same having struck therefrom a plurality of tongues 25 providing ventilating openings 26 therein, these tongues 25 being also designed to shield the said openings for the purpose heretofore described.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood and, there fore, a further explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
A chicken coop com rising front and rear walls, a sheet metal p ate bent to provide a top and sides and resting against the said walls, the outer faces of the walls lying flush with the end edges of the said plate, inturned flanges formed on the lower edges of the sides, a bottom slidably engaging and resting upon the flanges whereby the said bottom can be readily removed, the lowermost edges of the said front and rear walls 1n presence of two wltnesses.
being spaced from the flanges to permit the removal of the bottom, tongues out in and out-struck from the sides to provide ventilating openings therein, bands disposed against the outer faces of the top and sides.
and fasteners passed through the bands," side and top and engaged the front and rear walls for uniting the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature CHARLES S. J A MEsqa.
