ADJUSTABLE STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAF O. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Adjustable Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stools of that type in which the stool seat is slidably adjustable upon the stool frame, and is adapted to be secured in the desired position of adjustment, the object of the invention being to provide a stool which may be strongly and economically constructed of metal or wood which presents a neat and attractive. appearance, and which embodies means for quickly, conveniently and securely clamping the seat in adjusted posit-ion.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an adjustable stool constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. l and showing parts in section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the stool. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 4 4: of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the stool seat, which may be constructed of metal, wood or other suitable material. This seat is mounted upon a supporting plate 2 bolted or riveted, as at 3, to a washer or connecting plate 4 carried by a head or crown piece 5 upon the upper end of the seat post or tube 6. A brace or bracket member 7 is secured to the head 5 and riveted or otherwise fastened to the plate 2, whereby the seat is firmly secured to the 10 The post 6 is fitted to slide vertically in a guide tube 9 carried by the seat supporting frame of the stool. This frame comprises a collar 10, suitably fastened to the upper end of the tube 9, a bottom ring 11, a series of legs 12, and a pair of metal braces 13. The legs 12, preferably four in number, incline outwardly and downwardly and are bolted or riveted at their upper ends to the collar 10, as at 14, and extend at their lower ends outside of and below the ring 11. At the points where the legs cross the ring, the flanges of the legs are notched,
as at 15, to provide flat surfaces bearing against the outer face of the ring and shoulders 16 bearing against the upper edge of the ring, each leg being fastened to the ring by a bolt or rivet 17 The metal braces 13 are arranged in opposed relation and are formed of strap metal bent into V-shape, the arms of the braces being extended outward radially and provided with laterally bent portions 18 also fastened to the ring 11 by the rivets 17, the vertex portion of each brace being bent into arcuate shape, as at 19, and secured to the guide tube 9 by a bolt or rivet 20. These braces hold the frame ring, guide tube and legs firmly assembled, thus providing a strong and rigid type of frame structure. If desired, the lower end of the tube 9 may be annularly grooved, as at 21, to provide a seat for the portion 19 and shoulders to engage the same, thus increasing the strength and durability of the fastening connection.
A semi-circular bracket 22 rests upon the collar 10 and is provided with ears 23 for the passage of rivets or analogous fastenings 24: whereby said bracket is firmly fixed in position. The bracket forms a guide and support for a seat post clamp comprising a pair of semicircular clamping members 25 and 26. The said clamping members are provided at one end with lugs 27 engaging a central opening 28 in the bracket 22, and are formed at their opposite ends with ears 29 apertured for the passage of a bolt 30. The clamping member 25 is held relatively stationary by a screw or other fastening device 31 connecting the same with the bracket, while the clamping member 26, whose lug 27 fits loosely in the opening 28, is relatively free for movement. A hand wheel 32 is provided with a stem 33 having a threaded socket 34 receiving and engaging the threaded shank of the screw 30, whereby the two clamping members may be relatively adjusted to clamp or release the seat post 6. The free ends of the two clamping members are adapted to have sufficient resiliency to throw them out of engagement with the seat post when relieved from pressure, and the member 26 has sufiicient resilient as well as body movement to insure of the adjustment of the clamp to a proper degree to hold the seat post firmly in adjusted position.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that by turning the hand wheel in one direction the clamps will be retracted to release the seat post and permit of the desired vertical adjustment of the seat, While upon the movement of the hand wheel in the reverse direction the seat post will be clamped in adjusted position. It will also be seen that the construction described provides a stool which is neat and attractive in appearance and ofmaximum strength and durability.
While the particular embodiment disclosed is preferred, it will of course, be understood that modifications within the scope of the claim may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
