'in the parish of Caddo and tate of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improver,ments in Tie-Plates, of which the following is a specification.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral l designates an ordinary wooden tie, and 2 the rail which is adapted to be arranged upon my improved tie plate, which is designated broadly by the numeral 3. The plate is adapted to be secured upon the tie l and to be attached to the rail 2 without the employment of means -not connected with the plate. The tie plate is constructed from a single piece of fiat metal and embodies a body 4.- having sides 5. The sides have their edges inclined toward each other and are thus substantially V-shaped, The apex of the sides or the lower portions thereof are formed with V-shaped teeth 6. The teeth 6 are adapted to be bent at a right angle to the sides 5, whenthe device is to be applied to theties, and asmillustratedY iti- Fig. 3 of the drawing. The sides 5 are bent at .an angle from 4the body .4 at pointsT designated by the numeral 7, in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The body, provided adjacent its opposite longitudinal edges with a plurality of inwardly extending substantially V- shaped slitted portions, the metal between ngers 8, while the said body between the -spaces provided for. the fingers 9 are further slit-ted to form the plate with downturned substantially V-shaped prongs 9. By reference to Fig. 3, it will be noted that the sides 5 are bent from the portion 7 at an angle greater than a right angle, so that the body may be snugly tted upon the .up
per face -of the tie and the prongs 9 em.- bedded within the said tie. The teeth 6 are also arrangedat an angle to the sides of the tie and when forced to within the tie ywill exert a pressure or tension upon the top of theplate to draw the saidv top more tightly into engagement with the tie. When the plate is thus positioned, the rail 2 is arranged between the ngers 8 and the said fingers are forced over the base flanges of the vtie as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4, 5-
and 8 of the drawings.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectl apparent to those skilled in the art to w ich such invention appertains with out further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim'is:
A tie plate formed from a sheet of bend-Y able material including a body 'having integrally formed upwardly extending fingers,
'the said body between the fingers being provided wi-th downwardlv extending prongs, bendable sides for the body, said 'sides having their edges provided with teeth which are adapted t'o be bent at a right angle to the sides, the prongs of the teeth adapted to be inserted within the top`of the' tie, the sides bent over the tie to retain the teeth at an angle to the sides of the tie to permit of the said teeth when forced within the sides of the tieeXertin-g a downward pressure upon the top of the plate, andthe fingersl of the plate adapted to be bent over the base flanges of a rail which is adapted to be arranged upon the' plate.
