I do hereby declare the following to be a" full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains. tov make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to admit of the fastening spikes employed for holding a tie plate on a wooden tie being securely held in operative position and prevented from working loose.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tie plate having means associated therewith for penetrating the tie, said means being adapted to compress the fibers of the i Re a the point of insertion of the spike, so

Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:

Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular shaped tie plate adapted to be mounted on the upper side of a tie, at one end thereof, as shown in Fig. 3 of theldrawing. compressing members forming the pairs 6 and 7 are mounted on the plate in such relation to the openings 4 and 5, that when the members penetrate the tie the fibers displaced by the beveled faces will be crowded beneath the openings 4: and'5, so that the spikes, designated 13, when driven into the tie will meet with considerable resistance, and the frictional engagement between the spikes and the tie will be increased so as to maximize the anchorage of the spikes.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. The combination with a wooden tie, of a. plate mounted on the upper side of the tie and provided with spike-receiving openings, and spaced pairs of converging tie penetrating and fiber compressing members carried by the under side of the plate and located adjacent the openings.
2. The combination with a wooden tie, of a plate mounted on the upper side of the tie and provided with spike-receiving openings, spaced pairs of tie-penetrating and fiber compressing members carried by the under side of the plate and located between the openings, the penetrating members forming one pair being of a greater length than the members forming the other pair.
