Description

CHARLES' H. FITCH, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it -known that ICHAnLEs H. Ihren, of the city and county of Worcester, and State of Massachnsetts7 have invented certain new and useful Improvemcnts in Boots;.and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved boot, a port-ion being broken away to show the' iuterior;
Figure 2 represents the inner side of the back and counter, previous to siding the boot; and
Figure 3 represents a transverse section of the side seam and counter.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make' and ,use the same, I .will proceed to ,describe it more in detail. l
lhe nature of my invention consists in combiningr the counter with the back of the boot, indepeiulent of the siding seams, as hereinafter explained.
In the drawing- The part marked A. indicates the front, and
B the back of the boot, joined to cach other by the siding seams C C.
The counterD is cut shorter than in the ordinary boot, and it is vsecured to the back B. previous to siding up the boots, by means of seams a c across its end, vand the seam b at its upper edge.
A suicient width of the leather' of the back is left at the end of the couuter, as shown at E, to receive the side seams C without stitching through the ends ot' the counter, as isv theordinary custom.
The counter D is formed of such length that when the upper is turned the ends of the counter set up closely against the seams C, and when said seams are rubbed down they form a smooth finish with the ends of' the counter, as indicated in iig.
It will be observed, by those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, that there are many advantages to be obtained 'by making and combining the parts, as herein illustrated, among which may be mentioned the following:
The siding seams can be stitched with greater lfacility, and the upper turned with ease without the liability of breaking out the stitches, ripping the seam, or breaking the counter from the seam by the operation, so that the counters may be much heavier than can be used where theirends are stitched in with the siding seams.
rlhe uppers made in accordance with my improvement can be lasted easier and better than the old style, and they will also stand up and wear better, while the seams C, not being stil-f and thick, will lie down fiat, so as not to gall thc ankles of the wearer.
It will also be observed that a great saving is made in stock, the counters being cut shorter than usual.
This, taken in connection with the increased facility of manufacture in stitching, lasting, andv treeing, and the reduced percentage ol' breakagcs in turning, as before stated, great-ly reduces "the cost of the boot, while a more perfect Aand durable boot is at the same time produced.
Having described my improved boot,
What 1 claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boot, in which the counter is constructed and applied to the-back B and relatively to the seams C, substantially iu the manner and for the purpose herein sctforth. 4
