Description

GEORGIE SWEEZY, OF RIVERHED, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 109,076., dated November 8; 1870.
lMPROVEMENT lIN ADJUSTABLE COAT-PATTERNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the sanne.
To all whom it may concern 'Bc it known that Il, Gnonon I.,Swenzv, ot' Riverhead, in the county ot' Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and, useful Improvement in Adjustable Goat-Patterns; and I do hereby declare that the lollowing a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which-will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoml'ianying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l'is a back three-quarter view of my improved adjustable pattern as attached to a human ligure.
Figure 2 is a detail view of the back -parts of the pattern. Y
Figure 3 is a detail view of one ot the ti'ontlparts of the pattern.
Figure 4 is a detail view ol'a the right-bami lower corner ot' the part shown' in hg. 3, part 'being broken away to show the construct-lon.
Figure 5 .is a. 'detail sectional view of one ot' the clamps or catches. 4
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts. v
I will nowdescribe my invention in connection with all that isnecessary to afull understanding thereof', and then clearly point it out in the claims.
My invention has for its object to furnish a coatpattern which may be placed upon and adjusted to the form ot' each customer, so that any sized coat may be cut, and cutvtolit perfectly, with scarcely the possibility' of mistake; and
It consists in the. pattern made iu pieces adjusted to slide upon each other to adjust the pattern to lit the person, as hereinafter more fully described.
The patternis made in three main parts, two front-s and a back, buttoncd to each other upon the sides and shoulders, as shown in iig. 1, and indicated by the buttons a-nd button-holes in rigs. 2 and 3.
Each front part is made in live pieces, A B C D E.
'I hc piece A is pivoted to thc piece B at the upper edge ot' said parts, and the forward edge of the piece A nnderlaps the. rear edge of the piece B or enters a pocket in said piece D, as indicated by dotted lines in lig. 3.
.lhe lpwer edge ol' the picco B nnderlaps the upper edge ofthe piece C or enters a'poeket in said piece G,
as shown in dotted lines in iig. 3.
.ln the saine way the forward edge et' the piece l) underlaps the rear edge ol' the piece (l, as shown in lig.... t
F are `t-he elan'ips b v which the overlapped pieces of the pattern are secured in place. The clamp F con sists o1' two plates,a stem, and a cam or eccentriclever. The lower end ofthe stem is secured to the lower one of the plates,` passes through the upper I plate, and to its upper endvis pivoted the cam or eccentric. The upper plate, or both the plates `when thc overlapping piece is made with a pocket, is or are secured to the said overlapping piece. The underlapping piece is made with a slit or slot through which the stem of the clamp passes, so that, by operating the eccentric 'of the clamp, the overlapping pieces when adjusted lnay be securely clamped t0 each other.
rIhe adjacent edges of the pieces D E meet, andare provided with slotted slides, G, as shown in Iig. 4, so that the piece E may have a vertical adj ustment, one or the other of said slides being provided .with a clam p, F, to secure the said pieces D E in place when adjusted.
The twov front parts are made exactly alike except that one at its forward edge has connected with it a strap, 1I, provided with a clamp, F, which strap is slotted, and has a buttolrhole in its forward end to button upon a button attached to the tbrward edge ot' the otherfront part, to draw the pattern to its place upon the person.
The back part ofthe pattern is made in four pieces, I J KL, the adjacent edges of which overlap each other, are slotted, and are provided with clamps F, to secure them in place when adjusted.
rIIxe overlapping pieces ot' the pattern are all provided with numbered scales, M, in the places where the measurements are usually taken, s0 that a record of the adjustment of the pattern, or rather ot' the measure of the customer, may bc conveniently made,
`it' desired.
Io the inner edges of each underlapping piece oi" the pattern are attached one or more cords,"N, which pass out through holes in the overlapping piece, and may have buttons or knobsattaehed t'o their outer ends, for convenience in drawing the said pieces t0- gether when required.
Having thus described my invention,
I clain'i as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateutl. The front patterns, composed of pieces A B C D ll, connected by clamping slides, and provided with graduations, as shown and described.
The back patterns l J K L, connected by clamping slides, and provided with graduations, as described.
3. The. two ti'ont and back patterns, combiuedwith clamps F and slotted slides G, when all are constructed and applied as described, to form an adjustable coat pattern.
The above specileation of my invention signed by me this 24th day of August, 1870.
Witnesses: GEORGE 1. SWEEZY.
