To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WESTLEY L. Gunman, citizen of the United States, residing at Strasburg, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in baling presses, designed particularly for baling cotton, hay, paper, &c., the general principle of operation involving the compress ing action of an upwardly moving plunger or piston.
The invention has for its object, principally, to provide for baling or compressing the contents of the baling chamber at an even, slow, steady compressing action to allow amply for the escape of the air and thus avoid distorting the forming bale.
Further objects are to economize space, to lessen the amount of' power required to perform the desired work, to promote simplicity of construction, and to otherwise provide for securing approved and eifective results conducive to the ends had in view by my invention.
The invention, therefore, consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illus trated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein as to the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and
in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal sectionof my baling press. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical transverse section of the device. Fig. t is a fragmental partly sectional and partly plan view taken on the line y-yof Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a partly side and partly sectional view showing: the plunger actuating gear and worm equipped shaft engaging said gear, together with the shaft retaining dog, a portion of the housing being broken away. Fig. 6 is a verticalsection taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 5, one of the guides for the worm and gear and the shaft actuated by said gear being partly shown. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I employ a suitable chamber or boX 1, preferably of oblong or rectangular general outlines, as disclosed, it being provided with a suitable top or closure 2 furnished upon its under side with spaced apart slats 3; also within this box or chamber is provided a plunger or piston 4 having a solid or imperforate surface, also equipped with like spaced apart slats 5, upon its upper side, the well understood purpose of which spaced apart slats upon both the top or closure and the piston or plunger, is to provide for the convenient w1r1ng of the forming bale or contents of the chamber or press. The top or closure 3 opposite end wall of the box are recessed from its upper end downwardly suitable dis tances to receive and provide for the pivotmg of the vertical portions or legs of a bailvlikemember or keeper 7 with its horizontal or yoke-like portion upstanding beyond the upper end of said end wall, thus providing for the receptionthereunder of the corresponding end of the top or closure, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, said keeper being retained in upright position and automatically returned to such position after the removal of pressure therefrom by means of the resilient member or spring 7 suitably secured to the box or chamber. Said end of the top or closure 2 is notched or recessed, as at 8, about centrally; and upon said top or closure is eccentrically fulcrumed, as at 9, a cam lever 11, itself having a tooth or projection 12 at its lower corner edge, taking under the baillike member 7, said cam lever being fulcrumed with its said corner edge let into said recess or notch, whereby, as will be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, by suitably actuating said cam lever it is caused to forcibly secure or'retain the top or closure in effectlve or clamped positlon, as 1s apparent.

Suitable latches 1 pivoted to the end walls of the box or chamber 1 and engaging notched bars or catches l secured to the side walls of the chamber provide for the retention of the door forming sections 1 in closed position, or as continuations of the lower sections or halves of the lateral walls of the chamber or box 1.
'The plunger or piston 4: has end depending members or boards 5*, the same being fixed to the underside thereof and equipped near their lower ends with anti-frictional rolls or bearings 13 engaging the lateral Walls of the chamber or box 1, said arrangement also providing against any lateral movement of said plunger or piston and consequently any binding action thereof upon the opposite walls of the chamber or box. Said plunger or piston is actuated by a horizontalshaft 14,, rectangular in cross section, and fitted with sleeves 15, having corresponding bores or interiors with the cross sectional outline of said shaft, said sleeves being received within circular apertures 16 in the depending end members 5 ofthe plunger or piston. Said sleeves 15 have fixed thereto, or integral therewith, spur pinions 17 which are received within vertical, longitudinal or elongated slots 18 in the end walls of the chamber or box 1, the walls of said slots, however, being out of contact with said pinions, the function of which pinions will presently appear.
Guide members 19 and 20 are suitably secured to the outer surfaces of the end walls of the box or chamber 1, one of said guide members upon each end wall being equipped with a plurality of continuous teeth 21, forming a rack, the racks thus pro vided facing or being opposed to the edge of the opposite plane guide member and engaged by the'spur pinions 17 to provide in connection with other means later described for the actuation of the plunger or piston.

The other housing or hanger 22*, however, has only, at anupper corner, a slotted or notched inturned or right angled stud or terminal 23, only one being required for the guidance of that end of theshaft 3, as will be noted by referring to Figs. 1 and 7, the notch or slot of said stud or. terminal receiving an outturned offset terminal or rib 25 on a single guide member 19. Also carried by one of the sleeves 15 and housed within the hanger or bracket 22 is a concave faced gear wheel 26, with which meshes a worm 27, fixed upon a'handle equipped actuating shaft 28, its handle being designated as 29, said shaft being journaled or supported in said housing or bracket, and by means of which arrangement it will be noted that, by suitably actuating said shaft, the handle '29 being properly grasped, the plunger or piston t may be actuated or moved upwardly, effect-ing thereby the'coinpressing of the contents of the chamber or box 1, the latter having been suitablycharged through its feeding opening at the upper end with the required material, as cotton, hay, paper or other balable material, the compressing action of the plunger or piston forcing the material into a compact mass in the upper part of the chamber or box, as is apparent, where it is readily accessible for wiring, as before indicated.
The housing or hanger 22 has at its upper end an arcuate slotted upward extension 30, its concavity being presented inwardly, it thus being caused to somewhat overhang the housing or hanger 22, as seen particularly in Fig. 5. From the upper end of this extension is pivo-tally hung a' correspondingly outlined latch or dog 31 adaptedto be swung in a direction laterally thereof into contact 3 or engagement with the shaft 28, the slot-of said extension designated as 33 receiv ng said shaft, thus providing for the retention of said shaft against endwise displacement, the inner end of the shaft being preferably rounded, as at 341, and received orbearing in a cavity, 35 within the bracket or housing. The latch 3 is provided with a projection 32 for its convenient manipulation; and by means of the foregoin arrangement it is further observed that the shaft 28 may be moved, with its end 34: still bearing or resting in the cavity or socket 35 in the bracket or housing, upwardly in a diagonal direction within the slot 33 of the housing extension 30, whereby the worm 27 of the shaft28 may be unshipped or disengaged from the gear wheel or pinion'26, to allow of the plunger or piston, after the formation' of the bale, including the wiring thereof, to ,be
quickly or at once run down to initial or lowered position, as called for in the formation of each successive bale.
Among other characteristics of my press, it will be noted that the bale is formed, or, rather, the compressing operation performed, by the upward movement of the plunger, the plunger completing said operation with such upward movement or stroke thereof for the reasons and advantages before recited, while the device in its entirety is extremely simple in construction, of few parts, readily and with the application of the minimum amount of force operated, and effective in its action, aside from being inexpensive of manufacture, &c.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A baling press, including a plunger or piston, a sleeved shaft carrying said plunger, an actuating shaft geared to said plunger-carrying shaft, vertically movable bearings for said shafts, guides upon the pressbox for said bearings, the press-box having racks thereon, said sleeved plunger-carrying shaft being geared to said racks.
2. A baling press, including a plunger or piston, a baling chamber containing the latter, a shaft carrying said piston or plunger, an actuating shaft, intergeared worm and gear effecting connection between said piston carrying shaft and said actuating shaft, and slidable bearings for said actuating and piston carrying shafts, said intergeared worm and gear controlling said shaft.
3. A baling press, including a piston or plunger, a shaft with sleeves thereon, said sleeves carrying said plunger and equipped with pinions, an actuating shaft geared to the aforesaid shaft, racks provided upon walls of the baling chamber, slidable bearings for said shafts forming housings for said gears, said pinions gearing with said racks.
4. A baling press, including a baling chamber having a plunger, a shaft equipped with sleeves, themselves having pinions, slidable bearings for said shaft sleeves, said baling chamber being equipped with guide members, one upon each end wall of said chamber, said chamber end walls having vertical slots, one wall of each slot having a rack thereon, said pinions meshing with said racks, and a handle equipped shaft, worm and gear wheel connection between said latter shaft and the aforesaid shaft, one of said slidable bearings also carrying said handle-equipped shaft.
5. A baling press, including a baling chamber, a plunger within said baling chamber, a shaft equipped with sleeves bearing said plunger, said sleeves being provided with pinions, said baling chamber having vertical slots in its end walls, one wall of each slot being provided with a rack, said pinions meshing with said racks, slidable housings or hangers, guiding members upon the end walls of said baling chamber for said housings, one of said housings being provided with an arcuate slotted upward extension having pivotally hung therefrom a latch or dog adapted to swing in a direction at right angles with respect to said extension, said housing also having at its end opposed to said upward extension and said dog a cavity, an operating shaft having one end rounded and received by said cavity, said shaft extending through the slot 'of said upward extension and engaged by said pivotally hung latch or dog, and a gear wheel and worm connection between said operating shaft and one of said shaft carried sleeves.
6. In a baling press, including a baling chamber, means arranged in connection therewith for effecting the baling operation, a closure for said baling chamber, one end thereof being received within an end wall of said baling chamber, the opposite end wall of said chamber having an automatically held pivoted bail-like member at the upper end, extending above said upper end, and a cam lever or dog fulcrumed upon said closure, one end of said closure being received within said bail-like member and having a recess therein to receive the forward end of said cam lever, the cam edge of said cam lever being adapted to engage and force said bail-like member off said end of said closure.
