HAY-PRESS.
Application filed October 8, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Mosns M. FIELDS, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HayPresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses and particularly to a press designed for use in baling, the primary object of the said invention being to produce a press capable of simultaneously compressing material to form two bales within a single hopper or casing, said hopper or casing being suitably divided.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a casing having means for securing one side in place so that it may be read ily removed for the purpose of taking out the bales. which are compressed in said casing and the invention furthermore resides in novel means for operating the followers or compression heads, whereby the bales are formed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of a press embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates a transverse sectional view; Fig. 4 illustrates a top plan view; Fig. 5 illustrates an end view; and Fig. 6 illustrates a view in perspective of a portion of one of the partitions.
In these drawings 7 denotes a base on which the casing is built, one side and the ends thereof being of a rigid structure and the other side being formed by the doors 8 and 9, the said door 8 being movably mounted in the casing by the hinges 11 and the door 9 being movably mounted on the casing by the hinges 12. Each door comprises the strips 13 and 14, which carry the panels 15 and 16, the said panels being separated intermediate the length of the strips 13 and 14 to form the space 17. As the doors are practically duplicated, description of one Specification of Letters Patent.

will suflice as a description of the other and 1t is noted that the purpose of the space 17 is to form a clearance for the reception of a tongue 18 which projects from one edge of the transversely disposed partition of which the element 19 is a part, the said partition being constructed to two transversely extending plates 20 and 21 between which the element 19 is secured, so that the tongue 18 beam 24 is movable, the said press beam being provided with followers or heads 25 adapted to engage the contents of the casing for pressing the same.
The upper door is held closed by latches 26, whereas the lower door, which sustains the pressure due to the action of the beam and heads, is held in closed position by rods 27 and 28having angularly extending ends 29 and 30 respectively, which angular ends overlie the sides of the door strips and prevent movement of the said door with relation to the casing. When said door is to be opened, however, the rods may be rotated to cause a disengagement of the angular ends thereof from the door strips and the said door may then be swung on its hinges.
By reason of the presence of the tongue 18 which enters the space 15 between the door panels, a joint is produced between the partition and the door which will prevent the escape of the contents of the casing while said contents is being pressed and the door may be removed from the partition and the tongue thereof, as it swings on its hinges. As shown in Fig. 2, the partition has an aperture 31 in which the rod 27 is seated and rotates.
As a means for operating the presser beam, racks 32 and 33 are provided, one at each end of the casing and these racks have a double set of teeth for a purpose to be presently explained. The beam 24 consists of two side plates 34 and 35 between which inner end, each of said links being adapted to engage an inner series of teeth of the said rack. From an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawing it is evident that the oscillation of the handle or lever 38 will result in operating the presser beam and that it will be pulled downward upon downward pressure of theouter end of the lever andcthat upon upward movement of the outer end of the lever, the link 39 may be caused to move into engagement, with the next succeeding tooth of the rack so that by again moving the outer end of the said lever downward, further pull on the presser beam will be effeoted for the purpose of compressing the contents of the casing.
I claim- In a press, a casing including hinged MOSES M. FIELDS. Witnesses D. M. Honens, CHAs. Tnnns'ro.
