KNIFE-.SHARPENER.
LUdQAQL Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Mar. it. t, 12 1a Application aleaaia as, 1913. Serial no. 770 ,2913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, EUGENE J. S'romn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an l nprovement in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is aspecification.
My present invention relates to a knife sharpener, and particularly to that class of these devices in which the blade of a knife, or other tool which is to be sharpened, is drawn over and between the surfaces of adjoining sharpening disks, and the object of my invention is the provision of a sharp ener of this type which is of inexpensive construction, which includes members by which the sharpening disks may be turned to present new surfaces to the edge to be sharpened, and also a tool which is of such a size as to be readily carried about in ones pocket. I
The particular construction of my im proved knife sharpener will be hereinafter more particularly described...
In the'drawing, Figure '1 is a side elevation of my improved lmiie sharpener. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that in making my im roved sharpener, 1 preferably employ a ame 10, made of sheet metal or other similar material, in
' corresponding parts, adapted to be folded so as to lie in planes approximately parallel to each other. One side of the frame is indicated at 11 and the opposite side at 12. This frame also includes a handle 13, by which the instrument may be readily grasped when in use} and the sides also 1nelude projections 14, 15, employed impairs.
Mounted between the pair 'of projections 14 is a sharpening disk 16. 'As shown in the drawing, this is preferably mounted .on a pivot 1 which is journaled in the projections 14. Similarly in the projections 15 is a sharpening disk 18 secured to a pivot 19,
-which is journaled in the projections 15.
These sharpening disks, as indicated in the drawing, are so placed in the frame that their peripheries contact with one another, and, as will be understood, these sharpening disks are preferably made of suitable hardened steel. Also within the projections 14.
and secured on the pin 1'7, or suitably secured to one 'face of the sharpening disk 16,
is a toothed wheel 20, which is of materially smallerdiameter than the sharpening disk 16 and is concentric therewith. The sharpening disk 18 is similarly provided with a toothed wheel 21. I also employ a toothed wheel 22 mounted on a pin 23 passing through and journaled in the sides of the frame in such a position that the teeth oil the wheel 22 mesh with the teeth of the wheels 20 and 21. This toothed wheel 22, as will be seen byreference to Figs. 1 and 3, projects an appreciable distance through a slot provided therefor in the edge of the frame, so that the wheel 22 may be readily revolved to turn thewheels 20 and 21, which, as will be understood, also cause the-sharpening disks 16 and 18-13 turn, so that as often as desirable in the use of the instru ment, a new surface may be presented by the sharpening disks to the edge of the tool to be sharpened. 1 also prefer to employ a pair of lugs 24-, 25, projecting laterally from the sides of the irame, and suitably.
I claimas my invention:
1. A knii e sharpener comprising a fireme sharpening disks so mounted therein that their peripheries contact with one another, wheels of smaller diameter than the sharp ening disks lying beside the same within the frame, and means also seeuredwithin the frame for revolvingthe said wheels of smaller diameter to turn the sharpening disks. I
2. A knife sharpener comprising a frame, knife sharoening disks mounted therein so their peripheries are in contact with one an.- other, a toothed wheel secured within the said frame against the side of each sharpen ing disk, and a toothed wheel mounted in the side, of the said framein such a position that the teeth thereof mesh with the teeth of the aforesaid toothed wheels.
A knife sharpener comprising a frame having parallel sides, lugs in pairs project'- ing from the said sides, a knife sharpening disk mounted between each pair of logs so that the peripheries of the said disk contact fill t ll
