To all whom it ma concer'nfi Be it known t at 1, Jones Hnn'rnnnnncan, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Internal-Combustion.Engine, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention .to improve the construction of internal combustion engines of the sliding valve type and particularly of the sleeve type. V By my invention a valve or valve sleeve is given. an absolutely smooth motion having both axial and rotary components and is operated by a sin le train of mechanism from the crank sha t. Any )oint on the sleeve moves in a smooth closed curve. The various novel features of my invention will-appear from the description and drawings and will be pointed. out in the claims. Y V In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, substantially on line 1-1 of Fi 2 through a sin le sleeve gas engine form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section through the sleeve, substantially on Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the application of my invention to a double sleeve engine.
In the preferred form of my invention, the piston moves longitudinally in the sleeve or inner cylinder 11, and said sleeve is mounted in and movable bothaxially and rotatively relatively to an outer cylinder or frame 12. This location of the sleeve 11, however, is not essential. .The outer cylin der 12,v which may be 'acketed to provide 5 aces. 13 for the circulation of a cooling uid, is fixed to thetop of a crank case 14 in which is mounted a crank shaft. 15' connected tothe' piston 10 by a pitma-n 16. The desired closed other end of the arm 20 is mounted on an eccentric device, such as a crank or eccen-- true 24, on the. counter shaft 17, the mountmg being such that a sli ht side play of the arm 20 is permitted. T 1e sleeve 11 is provlded with one or more inlet ports 25 and one or more exhaust orts 26, which cooperate, respectively, with inlet and exhaust openings 27 and 28 in the outer cylinder 12;
In the-operation of the engine, the counter shaft 17 makes one revolution for each two revolutions of the crank shaft 15. B the rotation of the counter shaft 17 an the connection between it and the sleeve 11, the latter is moved both axially and circumferentially, any particular point on the sleeve describing a closed curve. Because of the long'bearing of the arm 20 on the flanges 21 and 22, the sleeve 11 is moved vertically or axially a distance equal to the vertical component of the movement caused by theeccentric 24, the arm 20 being maintained always longitudinal. This vertical component always associated with an equal horizontal component, which moves the pin 23 the same distance about the axis of the sleeve as a located relatively to'each other and to the inlet and exhaust openings 27 and 28 that the exhaust port is opened, or made to register with the exhaust opening 28, at'every second up-stroke of the piston, and the inlet ports 25 are opened, or made to register with the inlet openings 27, on the down strokes of the piston which immediately follow the aforesaid up-strokes, the ports being closed during the remaining up and down strokes, or during compres'sionand explosion. It is not essential, and indeed it isusually not desirable, that the inlet and exhaust ports 0 en and close precisely at the beginning and end of the intake and exhaust strokes; this may be varied in accordance with conditions.

My invention is capable. of considerable modification from the preferred embodiment illustrated, and I aim to cover all'modifi'cations which do not involve a departure from the spirit and'scope of my invention as set forth in the following claims.
What I claim as new is:
1. In an internal combustion engine the combinationof a cylinder, a casing sleeve movable both axially and rotatively vand provided with ports controlled by such movement, a piston movable in said cylinder, a crank shaft operated by said piston, a counter'shaft connected to said crank shaft so as to operate at one-half the speed thereof, an eccentric device on said counter shaft, a connecting rod transverse to the counter-shaft and operated by said eccentric device and pivoted to said sleeve, and means for maintaining the connecting rod parallel to a planetransverse' to the plane in which the eccentric device moves.

and a connecting rod fitting between said always parallel to a given plane.
8. In an internal combustion engine, the
combination with the cylinder vand'piston, of a valve sleeve for said eng1ne,-' an eccentric device operated fromsaid piston, and 'connectlng means between sald eccentric de- .vice and said valve sleeve for movingthe latter in a curved path having components both axially and circumferentially of the sleeve, said connecting means being'rigid and atall times parallel to a given plane.
9. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the cylinderan'd piston, of a valve sleeve for said engine, a countershaft operated from said iston, the axis of said countershaft and t e axis of said sleeve being non-intersecting, an eccentric device mounted on'said"countershaft, and a connecting rod pivoted to said valve sleeve and having a universal mounting on said eccentric device, said connecting rod extending transversely to thecountershaft.
