a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Sashl Construction, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention while relating to sash construction in general has for its particular object the formation of the sashcorner', lock relation that. they cooperate. in effecting a compact rigid construction of which the sash members may be much narrower .than is ordinarily found to benecessary to accommodate the lock and'of lightermaterial due to the reinforcing action .of the lock plate. The lock plate also serves as a housing for the locking elements and has formed integral therewith the sash lift. Moreover, the engagement of the lock with the window operates to normally thrust the sash therefrom and maintain vthe same under spring:

The inner edge of the extension 20 is substantiallv vertical and in line with the outer wall of the glazing groove so as to lie closely adjacent the outer face of the glass while the sash lift 23, formed integral with the plate, projects outwardly in a substantially horizontal direction. ln order to provide a particularly rigid and efficient connection between the rail and stile at each corner of the sash a reinforcing lining 64 is provided which is Lfshaped in side elevation and substantially U-shii ed in cross section, the U opening inwardly. I claim:
1. Insash const-ruction, the combination with a rail andstile connected to form sash corner, of an exteriorA plate secured tol with a rail. and stile connected to form a" sash corner, of an exterior L-plate secured to both of the sash members and bridging the joint therebetween and extending from the corner along eachof said members, the inner edges of .the plate defiected laterally to form a flange fitting over the inner edges oi the members, and a lock operating member carried by the plate and extending into the glass area of-the sash, substantially as d escribed. v
3. In sash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to form a .sashvcorner, of an L-plate secured to both of the sash members and bridging the joint therebetween and extending from the cornerv along each of said members, the inner edges of the plate deflected laterally to form a flange fitting over the innerv edges ofthe members, a lock operating member mounted on the p-late, and a stud integralwith the plate and engaging within a recess of the sash, substantially as described.
4. Insash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to forma sash corner, of a plate secured to both of the sash members and bridging the joint therebetween and extending from the corner along each of said members, the inner edges of the plate deflected laterally to form a flange fitting over the inner edges of the members, a sash lift formed integral` with the plate, and a lock covered by the plate `and having a finger piece disposed adjacent the lift, substantially as described.
5.'In sash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to form a sash corner, of an L-plate overlying the joint land extending from t-he corner along the side face of each of said members, said i plate projecting inwardly beyond the inner I edges "of the sash members into the space bounded by said members, a lift carried by the plate, a lock covered by the plate, and a finger piece disposed adjacent the lift,

6, In sash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to form a sash corner, of an L-plate overlying the joint and extending from the corner along the side face of each of said members, the plate projecting inwardly beyond the inner edges of the sash members and overlying said` inner edges in snug fitt1ng engagement, a
lift formed integral with the inner extension of the plate, a lock` covered by the plate, and a finger piece disposed adjacentthe lift, the lift and finger piece being entirely within t-he area bounded by the inner edges ot the sash members, substantially as'described.
7. In sash, construction, the combination.
Awith a narrow rail and stileconnected to form a mitered sash corner, `of 'an L-plate secured upon the face oftboth the sash members and bridging the mitered joint therebetween and 'extending from the corner along each of said members, the outer edges of the plate disposed at a distance fronithe outer edges ot the sash members, and the inner edges of the plate deflected laterally to form a flange fitting over the inner edges of the sash members, a lift carried by the plate, a lock covered by theplate and having a finger piece arranged adjacent the lift, the lift and finger piece arranged Within the area bounded by the inner edges of the sash, substantially as described.
8. In sheet metal sash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to form a sash corner and provided along their inner edges with a groove, of aninterior reinforcement comprising a lining U- vshaped in cross section with the limbs extending into the space on each side of the groove, of a plate secured to both of the sash members and bridging the joint therebetween, means passing through the sash members and connecting the plate and reinforcement, and a sash lift carried by the plate, substantially as described.
9. In sheet metal sash construction, the combination with a rail and stile connected to form a sash corner with their inner edges curved and provided along a medial line with a glazing groove, of an interior corner reinforcement secured to adjacent sash mem- 1 bers and comprising a lining U-shaped in cross section with the limbs deHected'inwardly and extending into the closed space on each side of the groove and-abutting the Walls of the groove, an L-plate secured to both of the sash members and bridging the combinatie n min in.
