Description
MOSES-DELU'DE, 0F GARROLTON', M'IGHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 108,981, dated November 8, 1870..
IMPROVEMENT INSAWfMILLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of th'e same.-
To who-m it may .concern Be it known that I, Mosns DnLUnn, of Oarrolton,
in the county of Saginaw and'State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gang-Saw Hangings; and Ido declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to-theaccolnpanying dra-wing and to the letters of reference'marked thereon, a-nd 'being a part ot this` specilication, in which- Figure' lis a perspectiveview of a portion of a gangfranie o rgate, showing` my improved .method'oi' straining the saws therein.
Figures 2 and 3 are plans oi' the bearing-plaies on the cap and under the sill of the gate.
Figure 4 is a side elevation oi'a sawitted with my hooked straps.
Figure 5`is a perspective of the lower, and
Figure 6 of the upper buckle.
Figures l7 and 8 are perspectives of the gil and ke),
respectively.
Like letters indicate like parts in cach lfigure.
lhc natureof my invention-relates to an improved method of hanging and straining sa-ws in gang-frames or gates; and Y v it consists in the peculiar shape and arrangement of lthe lower buckles.
in the drawing'- A represents a gang-frame orgatc, of the usual constf'urtion, except that the sill, instead of heilig solid, is provided with a transverse vertical slot, (t.
B are metallic plates laid outhe upper edges ol the slotted cap, and
1S are similar plates secured to the lower faces of the sill.
G are the saws, provided. at each end with a strap, D, hooked and opening toward the back of the saw, as shown at c, fig. 4. a
ll are I-shaped buckles, whose lower ends engage with the lower faces of the sill resting against the plates B. rlhe Shanks of these buckles project up through the slot a, and terminate in heads slotted to receive the senr-straps. l
In each slot is a tranverse pin, l), with which the hook ett-he strap engages. Once in place, these buckles are not required to be removed, but are susceptible of lat-eral adjustment in the sill by sliding to and fro.
11 are the upper buckles, iu like manner provided-` with a pin, d, in the slot at the lower end', witl1whicl1 engage. the hooks in the upper strapsl The slotted Shanks of' these buckles project up through and above the cap of thev gate. l j 'v f The saws being hooked in,"th pins arestrained by driving the keys G under the' gibs-H inthe Lupper part of the slotted shanks, and over' the plates B at the top of the cap. It will be noticed. that the sti-'ain from the log on the saw comes from the face or toothed edge, so thatl the saw cannot he detached until the -key is loosened.
lThe entire set of saws lip lagang requires to be removed every few hours for* iilingfaridfas :at present arranged, eonsiderabletimo gis;4 vconsumed in 'their` removal and adjustment again,v "`\Vith these hangings all that isrequired isto .simply loosen a key, remove the saw, slip in another, and tightenthekqy again, requiring but litt-le time in the operation. j i lWhere all the saws are removed :it once, and replaced by a fresh set, the usual gauge-blocks are placed betweentliem in resetting'. That 'I claim as myinvent-ion, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p The l-.shaped buckles E, provided with pins b', in connection with the slotted sill of a gang-frame, and the hooked straps D, as and for the purpose herein specified.
MOSES DELUDE.
