Be it known that I, Enifns'rl DE NEEN ANnnnsoN, a citizen of the United States of .\1nerica, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usc- `ful Improvements in Machines Jfor Making Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in machines for making boxes or receptacles of various kinds. It is primarily intended for assembling together certain telescoping' or interrelated parts of paste-hoard or other material that have previously been finished by other mechanism to serve in the construction of a box, receptacle, or-holder of any kind. One particular kind of boxV with which it is especially adapted for use consists of a cylindrical or tubular body or element that is inseitibleinto another cylindrical or tubular ody, one form of which is a Hanged disk to be tightly applied to one end of the other part to s cve as a bottom or a cover. It should be understood, however, that the machine has a wide variety of applications and may be employed in the manufacture of boxes, receptacles, or packages having many different forms made of various materials and intended for manifold uses.

Obviously the general frame-work of the machine in which the various mechanical elements are situated and relatively arranged for operation may vary within wide limits, and I do not wish to be restricted to any particular'lcind of frame. Many kinds of main frame may be employed. As an example of frame work, however, 1 denotes the bed plate supported on suitable legs 2. The bed plate'l is preferably of a longitudinal horizontal form. Horizontally opposite to and preferably at a suitable point above the bed plate 1, adjoining one end ot' the latter, is a platform 4 on which are first placed a pile of bo.\Y tubes or bodies upon which the machine is to operate, some of which are shown at 3, and similarly opposite the bed plate 1, near the other end thereof, is another platform G on which the covers or bottom pieces 5 are placed. An attendant transfers the tubes, which in this case are the bodies 3 from the table 4 to an adjoining feed belt which conveys them in the direction shawn by the arro-w in Fig. 5 toward the center of the machine; and an attendant also transfers the other tubes that areto be telcscoped with the first-mentioned tubes which in this case are the bottoms or covers 5 from the table 6 to another feed belt which carries them in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 5 toward the center of the machine. Thus it will be seen that there is ,a series ci tubular bottoms or covers '5 moving ln one direction, and a series of cylindrical bodies or tubes 3 movingr in the opposite direction, with' the object, of course, of having them meet in the central part of the machine Where the automatic devices are in operation for the purpose of taking each one of the tubes as it comes along and inserting it into one ofthe bottoms or covers, in the way that l shall proceed to explain in detail. i
The cylinders or tubes 3 are conveyed by an endless belt or carrier 7, and the bottoms 'or covers 5 by a similar endless belt or carv Fig 5. The belt 7 passes around two wheels 9, 9 whose shafts 10 are liournaled in standards 11, there being'a pair of these standards 11 foreach shaft 10. Standards 11 are bolted 'securely upon the bed frame 1. Likewise the belt S passes around the two wheels 12 which are similar to the wheels 9. Said wheels 12 are carried by shafts 13 that are journaled in standards 14, there being a pair of these standards for each shaft 13. Standards 11 are bolted upon the bed frame 1, Horizontal railsI 15. 15 are bolted oi otherwise firmly secured upon the upper ends of the pairs of standards 11, and similar horizontal rails 16, lt are bolted or otherwise firmly secured upon the upper ends of the standards 14. Thus there are two rails 15 stretching from one pair of standards 11 to the other pair of standards 11 with an interveningr space between them. as indicated I,in Fig. 6, where the belt 7 travels` and this belt is supported and slides upon the parallel flanges 15'nl formed by in dents in the opposite inner edges of the rails 15, so that the belt is allowed to be thish with the top surfaces of rails 15. See Fig. 6. Similarly, the rails 16 stretch from one pair of standards 11 to the other pair of standards 14, and there is an interveningr spare between these rails in which the other belt S travels flush with the top surface of the rails 1G and moves upon the flanges 16a. See Fig. 11. The rails 15 and also the rails 1G are provided at one or both sides with vertical guide rails 17 and 18 as shown in Figs. G and 14, for the purpose of keeping the cylindrical bodies and the bottoms "br covers in place while being fed forward. At convenient intervals apart, there being only enough space left between them to accominodate the individual cylinders or covers, these belts 7 and 8 are provided with lugs or pins 18. The detailed. construction of these pins is shown in Fig. 12. They are simply hollow metal projections which are clamped to the belts by means of screws 19 passing through the belt from the under side and having a convex head 20, while the threaded portion of the screw engages a correspondingly threaded passage within the pin 18.
