Description

W. H. O'CONNOR. MEANS FOR FEEDING MATERIAL. APPLICATION FILED JAN.18, 1912.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
pill/A WITNESSES: 7/2 a QRNEY WILLIAM H. OCONNOR, or EAST ORANGE, new JERSEY.
MEANS-FOR FEEDING MATERIAL.
Specification of Letter-slatent- Patented Mar. 10. 1914.
. Application filed January 18, 1912. Serial No. 671,977.
To all 1071,0272 it may concern Be it known that I, l i iLtiaar H. ()Cox- NOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of "New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Feeding Material; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificutting.means, and to provide'for feeding this'material whether it is thick or thin or even if it is uneven on its surface, and to also give way onthe introduction of any foreign material with the leather into the machine.
The invention consists in the method of securing the rollers to the shaft that drives them so that they will yield, and means for supporting the shaft onwhich the rollers are mounted.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing in .which- Figure 1 is-a section through" the feeding means showing it in conjunction with a knife of a leather splitting machine, and illustrating in elevation the supporting means for the rollers. Fig. 2 is an end view of the feeding means with one of the rollers in section and also showing a form of spring bearing for :one end of the shaft.
The invention is designed to be used on leather splitting machines primarily, and
the element with which the rollers cooperate is a fixed roll 10 whichis usually made solid, in the rear of and underneath which is a knife 11. Cooperating with the-t1xed roll 1 0,. and usually bearing lightly theresleeve,
on, are the rollers 12 which are arranged side by side and surround a shaft 13. the rollers being chambered or hollowed so as to surround the shaft at a distance therefrom and provide a space between the rollers and the shaft Mounted on the shaft 13 is a sleeve 1- the preferred way being for ea -h roller to have its own sleeve. the sleeve bean; fixed to the shafthy means of a kev 1:3 or auy suitable fastening means.
lvitliin each roller and connecting it with the sleeve. and thereby to the shaft: are the links 16, the links being pivotally connected as at 17 to the roller and as at 18 to the It will-thus be seen that when the shaft is rotated it pulls the links and through them, the roller so that the roller rotates with the shaft and is positively driven. Each link is slotted as at 19. the particular disposition of the slot, however, not being limited to that shown in the drawing so that there is a slotted connection between the roller and the shaft to permit the roller to be arranged eccentrically to the shaft, thus permitting it to spring away from the fixed roll when any undue thickness of materialbeing fed comes between the rollers and the fixed rolL To provide for excessive movement, that is, movement beyond the limit of move ment between the roller and its shaft, I arrange the ends of the shaft 13 in boxes 20 which slide in the frame 21, each box being supported by .a spring 22, the spring perniitting the shaft and its rollers all to retreat from-the fixed roll when undue pressure comes on any one roller, that is enough pressure to force it down to bear on the shaft 13. Each roller is individually supported by a lever 23 mounted to swing on a fulcrum 24 and having a knife edge on which is seated a rocking carriage On each side of the knife edge, and on each side of the center of the shaft 13, are the supporting rollers 27.
used in machines .of this type, but my linked form of connection bet een the roller the shaft.
inent.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim is:-
l. A feeding means comprising a fixed roll a shaft a secured on the being arranged between the sup nirting roller and the fixed roll, links, and pins pi otally l connecting the links with the sleeve and the roller so that the links nernially le tangential to the sleeve, at least one one tric to the sleeve. 1
2. A feedin ineans eoniyrisin a fixed D V C Copies of this patent may he obtained for nl K ire is in the nature of an improve- I F vide a space between them, the roller being supportingroller, a sleeve: shaft, a roller surrounding the sleeve at a distance therefrom so as to 5 provide a space between thcni the roller:
five cents roll, a shaft, 1 supportingroller a sleeve secured on the shaft, a roller surrounding the sleeve at a distance therefrom so as unproarranged between the supporting roller and the hxcd roll, curved links with substantially the same radius as the outside of the sleeve. and pins pivotally c nnceting the lint-1s with the sleeve and the roller so that the links nerinally lie tangential to the sleeve, at least one end of each link being i'ovidetl with a slot into which one of the afo esaid pins passes to give the rollers a liniz rotary movement in relation t the i sleeve and permit the movement it the roller to a position eccentric to the sleeve,
1n testimony that I claim the foreg ing I have hereunto set my hand this iith day of January 19111 lVILLIAM H. OCONNOR. lVitnesses: I
