FEEDING MECHANISM FOR GRINDING-MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,819, dated December 21, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, COUNTOIL MUNSON, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Grinding-Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to grain-feeders for grinding-mills.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective View of the grinding-mill having myimproved feeding device applied. Fig. 2 shows an end view of the upper portion of the device in connection with the driving mechanism of the shaker. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of the same mechanism. Fig. 4 shows details partially in longitudinal section. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section taken on line A B of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a plan view of the hopper and operating mechanism. Fig. 7 shows details of the operating mechanism partially in section.
Referring to the reference-figures in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the base of the machine, which carries the two shafts having band-pulleys 2 3. On the inner end of the shafts of these pulleys and within the casing 4 is located the grinding burs or disks. 5 is the hopper, within which is located the shaker 6. This shaker is supported at one end on an adjustable pivot 8 and is provided at the other end with an arm 9. In the bottom of the hopper 6 is a discharge-opening 6. The hopper is provided with an inclined bottom tending toward this opening. To the arm 9 of the shaker is ateccentric 16 are driven by the band 17 from one of the main shafts of the device. The eccentric 16 operates on the flexible piece of leather or similar material 18, supported and strained between projections 19 and 20 on the shaker, and the flexible facing is backed by a spring 21. For limiting the movement of the shaker there is provided an elastic stop 22, which is of cylindrical shape and received in a socket of the stop-support 23.
' The operation of the device is substantially as follows: When the mill is put in motion, a rotary motion is given to the eccentric 16, which operates on the spring and elastic-faced bufier to give a swinging movement to the free end of the shaker. As the eccentric operates to throw the free end of the shaker to the right, as the same is shown in Fig. 1, or from the shaft of the eccentric, the tension on the cord 10 is such as to give the free end of the shaker also an upward movement, so that the operation of the swinging end of the shaker is a sidewise and similar up-and-down movement, which operates to freely move the grain in the shaker toward the dischargeopening 6. give more or less inclination to the hopper.
The arrangement of the parts is such that the device works without noise.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In a grinding-mill a feed-shaker, a buffer thereon consisting of a flexible face-piece held by two rigid separated projections and a backing-spring between the projections in combination with a cam or eccentric operating onthe flexible face-piece between the said projections, substantially as set forth.
