Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1913.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Serial No. 764,200.
To all whom #may concern.'
Be it4 known that I, CLEMENT C. MODON- ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chenoa, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sidewalks, of
vwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cement walks, and more particularly to that class of walks which are constructed of slabs made of cement, concrete, or the like, the object being to embed tubing inthe slabs as they are molded, so that as the slabs are laid they can be connected together by means of dowel pins.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which Will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view showing several slabs connected together. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, horizontal, sectional view through the ends of two adjoining slabs. Fig. 3 is a view of a' modified form of slab partly broken away to disclose the connection of tubing.
A represents concrete or cement slabs and B the tubes which extend longitudinally of the slabs. Dowel pins 1 are provided with an annular flange 2 `which Bange is received between the ends of the slabs, and the ends of the pins Aextend into the tubes of the adjacent slabs, the flanges preventing the pins from ever becoming disengaged or passing into the tube of one of the slabs, thereby leaving the other slabs disengaged from the rst iange. rIhis connection forms a means of properly alining the slabs in the laying of a walk. With this connection the slabs can be easily `disengaged and removed during excavating. In many instances it is necessary to excavate for the purpose of getting access to Water and sewage pipes, and when this is done with the use of cement or concrete Walks, it is impossible to get all of the soil back beneath the cement or concrete walk, and eventually the walk will settle and crack and injure it beyond repair, whereas with slabs of this character it can be removed and re-laid at any time.
In Fig. 3 I have disclosed a modified form in which tubing extends longitudinally and transversely 0f the slab, and at 55 their junctures the several tubes B are connected together by four-way couplings 3.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a sidewalk, the combination with a plurality of slabs having recesses in the ends thereof, of tubes embedded Within the slabs having the outer ends thereof iush with the bottoms of the recesses, dowel pins inserted in the ends of the tubes of the adjacent slabs for connecting the slabs together, and annular flanges on the pins received in the recesses of the ad]a cent slabs for maintaining'the pins in place and preventing them from sliding into one of the slabs, thereby disconnecting the adjacent slab.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CLEMENT C. MGDONALD.
