The blank to be made comprises the cleats K, binding wires L and M, and veneer N,
the cleats being step-mitered at their ends. Because of this construction of the box blank, the devices for spacing and gaging the materials, and feeding the blanks through the machine, are as follows: The link belts O are provided with teeth 0, on the .upper surfaces of the links thereof, which teeth are adapted to engage the bottoms or lower edges of the cleats of the blanks. The link belts travel on the sprockets E and F, are parallel, and move endwise of the direction of the cleats of the blanks. With this construction the cleats move along the longitudinal guides P, until they engage teeth 0, after which the cleats are guided by the links of the said belts. The upper portions of these link belts are supported by guides Q, whereby they are prevented from sagging under the load of the cleats and veneer fromwhich the blanks are made. The guides P are'provided with overhanging flanges p, which latter bear upon the tops of the blanks as the latter pass under the staplers. Thus the serrated or toothed links of the belts O engage the bottoms or the lower edges of the cleats, for the purpose of moving the same endwise, and during this time the upward thrust of the link belts is sustained by the flanges 39, whereby the blanks are prevented from rising and thereby becoming disengaged from the teeth of the chains, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. \Vith this construction a spacing block R exemplifies spacing means separate from the feeding mechanism and arranged to be positioned at the rear end of a cleat, wherever said rear end may occur relative to the feeding mechanism. The spacing block having its position thus determined by the location of a cleat, serves to maintain the desired spaced relation between said cleat and the next following cleat. The illustrative blocks, being separate from the feeding mechanism, are adapted to be withdrawn readily from the spaces between the cleats, but are preferred to be in spacing position at some point in advance of the wire attaching point, and to remain in place between the cleats and to be fed thereby to substantially the wire-attaching point, so as to insure proper relative positioning of the parts so long as necessary. Thus endless traveling members are provided, having teeth for engaging the bottom or longitudinal surfacesbf the cleats, whereby the latter are caused to travel along the guides of the machine. The spacing blocks B are provided with recesses r above the teeth 0,'in the manner shown more clearly in Fig. 3. In this way the said teeth are adapted to enter the wood of the cleats of the blanks, but do not engage the spacing blocks R, by reason of the provision of the recesses r. In other words, these recesses 1 permit the spacing blocks to travel along without engaging the teeth of the endless link belts. It will also be seen that the specific blocks it have upstanding portions 9 which separate or space the edges of the sheets N of the blank, whereby the folding of the blankis facilitated and lappedcorners of the desired character are provided for the illustrative box.
With the construction thus shown the cleats will be moved forward until they engage the link belts, and some provision is necessary for insuring a correct positioning of the cleats at the opposite edges of the blanks. By this I mean that some provision must be made whereby the cleats at one side edge of the blanks will be positioned exactly opposite the cleats at the other side thereof. For this reason I provide a horizontal shaft F) mounted in bearings a on the guides P. The said shaft has its ends provided with vertically disposed arms .9, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. The guides P are provided with slots p, and the arms 8 have their upper ends provided with pins or fingers s that Work back and forth in these slots. These pins are provided with cam grooves s adapted to engage the cams 8* on the guides. It will be seen that these pins or fingers are controlled by the springs T liich springs tend to keep the ends of the said pins or fingers in the position shown in Fig. 7. Normally, therefore, these pins or fingers s which serve as positioning devices or gages, project into the path of the cleats. The operator will take a pair of cleats and place the same in the guides P, one in each guide, and shift the same forward against the pins or fingers 8 Then a pair of the spacing blocks R is placed in position, one block in one guide and the other block in the other guide, and each block against the end of the cleat. Then two more cleats are placed in the guides, with their ends against the said blocks. The remainder of the cleats and blocks are then placed in position, in said guides, and the veneer is then placed thereon. alinement this condition would not. be remedied by the illustrative spacing blocks, which would simply be inserted or positioned one at the rear of each of said initial cleats to maintain the spaced relation be tween such fear end and the next following cleat. Therefore it is important, in employing such spacing means separate from the feeding mechanism and located by the cleats themselves, that a preliminary positioning operation be performed, as by the illustrative gages 5 which shall insure the proper alinement of the initial cleats trans versely of the intended blank. After this initial positioning operation which properly locates the initial cleats, the independent spacing means exemplified by the blocks R will then serve to maintain the proper spaced relation between said initial cleats and the next following cleats, so that the latter shall be also maintained in desired transverse alinement.
With further respect to the feeding and spacing mechanism comprising the blocks R, chains 0 and ratchet devices, it will be seen that, in the illustrative machine shown in the drawings, the cleats are propelled by an individual feeding connection for each cleat, whereby one cleat does not necessarily push the other. Furthermore, the spacing means of said mechanism may be independent of and separate from the feeding means, as previously explained; but I do not limit myself to this independence of the spacing and feeding means, so far as spacing members are concerned which are operable either closer together or farther apart without necessarily stopping the machine. The spacing blocks It form portions of said feeding and spacing mechanism, and they are relatively movable to vary the space between them while the machine is running, except for their engagement with the cleats. In other words, these blocks R, during the assembly of the cleats, have no fixed connection between them, and are capable of movement toward and away from each other while in operation, but are held in spaced relation by the cleats, whereby the blocks space the cleats and the cleats space the blocks. Without cleats, the said blocks would be free to come together, as they are pressed forward; but when spaced by the cleats said blocks are held in proper relation to each other. Moreover, it will be seen that the cleats may be propelled forward, as illustrated, by pressure which does not involve any lateral thrust on the cleats in the horizontal plane thereof. In this way the cleats have no tendency toward'hoiizontal displacement or deviation from straight paths below the staplers. Moreover, the teeth 0 on the chains contribute to hold the cleats in spaced relation befofe they are wired together, and thus the blocks R depend onthe cleats to hold them in spaced relation. Thus, and with the arrangement shown, the mechanism involving the chains 0 feeds the cleats and sheets in spaced relation, and the intermittently advanced sections of the blank are successively wired together by the staplers? In this way, the immediate result of the stapling operation is a box blank composed of a series of separate sections which are unconnected except by the wires. In the illustrative mode of operation described with reference to the specific machine shown in the drawings, the spacing blocks-R may be retained in position between cleats even after the blank is completed, but when said spacing blocks have been removed the blank then becomes freely flexible to be folded into box form.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a machine for making wire bound be); blanks, the combination of guides for the cleats, end A traveling members pro vided with teeth for engaging horizontal surfaces of the cleats, loose spacing blocks interposed between the ends of the cleats, whereby thecleats of each blank are spaced apart endwise, means operating to position the cleats before they reach the said teeth and mounted to move a distance with the cleats about an axis below the path of travel of the materials, and devices for stapling binding wires to the veneer and cleats of the blanks.
2. In a machine for making wire bound box blanks, the combination of parallel guides for the cleats, loose spacing blocks for separating the cleats, whereby the cleats of each blank are spaced apart-endwise, endless traveling members provided with teeth adapted to engage longitudinal traveling surfaces of the said cleats, said endless travcling members and cleats being parallel, whereby the cleats of each blank are moved forward by reason of their engagement with the said traveling members, means for positioning the cleats, before they engage said members, movable a distance with t e cleats, about an axis below the path of travel of the materials, whereby the ends of the cleats in one guide are sure to be even with the ends of the corresponding cleats in the other guide, and a plurality of staplers having provisions for stapling the binding wires to the upper surface of the blanks.
3. A wire bound box blank machine comprising means for applying the parallel binding wires, mechanism for gaging or positioning the parts of the blank before the said wires are applied, said mechanism ineluding a pair of gaging or positioning fingers held stationary by direct sliding contact with the moving materials, while waiting to operate and movable toward and away from each other to move into and out (if the path of certain parts of the blank. means for mounting said fingers to travel a dis tance with the said parts, means for withdrawing the said fingers laterally of the path of travel of said parts, and means for returning the said fingers to normal position.
12. A wire bound box blank machine comprising devices whereby the blanks aregiven a step by step feeding motion, means for applying the parallel binding wires','mechanism for gaging or positioning parts of the blanks before the said wires are applied thereto, and before the said parts are ongaged by said devices, said mechanism including a pair of gaging or positioning fingers held stationary by direct sliding contact with the moving materials while waitin; to operate, arranged at opposite sides of the machine and adapted to project in front of the ends of the cleats, means wherebysaid lingers move a distance with the cleats, means for withdrawing the fingers at the end of their travel, to permit the cleats to pass, and means for returning the fingers in contact with the sides of the cleats.
13. A wire bound box blank machine comprising devices whcrel'iy the blanks are given a step by step feeding motion, means for applying the parallel binding wires, mechanism for gaging or positioning parts of the blanks before the said wires are applied thereto. and before the said arts are en 'gaged by said devices, said mechanism intact with the moving materials while waiting to operate and disposed at opposite sides of the machine adjacent the paths of travel of the cleats, said gaging devices provided with fingers for engaging the ends of the cleats, said fingers mounted to move a distance with the cleats, then pull out to permit the cleats to pass, and then return to normal position.
14. Awire bound box blank machine comprising deviccs whereby the blanks are given -nism including a pair of gaging or posia step by step feeding motion, means for applying the parallel binding wires, mechanism for gaging or positioning parts of the blanks before the said wires are applied thereto, and before the said parts are engaged by said devices, said mechanism comprising a pair of gaging or positioning fingers, springs for projecting-said fingers into the path of travel of certainparts of the blank to gage the positions thereof, said springs being held under tension by direct engagement of said fingers with the moving materials, said fingers traveling a distance with the said parts, and means whereby said fingers withdraw from said path to permit the parts in rear thereof to pass 'under the said means for applying the binding wires.
15. In a wire bound box blank machine,
staplers for stapling the binding wires to' the blanks, means including a pair of par allcl link belts with teeth for engaging the longitudinal surfaces of all the cleats for,
producing a step by step feeding motion of the blanks under and away from the said staplers, and mechanism in front of the staplers for insuring a proper delivery of parts of the blanks to said link belts, said mechationing fingers movable into and out o the path of travel of certain parts of the blanks and held out of the path of travel of said parts by direct frictional cont-acttherewith, the said fingers when in operative position moving a distance with the said parts.
16. In a wire bound box blank machine,-
staplers for stapling the binding wires to the blanks, eleat guides, feeding means for advancing the cleats step by step along said guides, and mechanism in front of the staplers for insuring a proper delivery of the cleats to said feeding means, said mechanism including a pair of gaging or positioning fingers, held out of the path of travel of the cleats by direct frictional contact therewith, movable into the paths of travel of the cleats, then movable a short distance with the cleats along said guides, then movable out of the path of the cleats laterally thereof, and then returnable to'normal p0- sition.
17. In a wire bound box blank machine, a pair of cleat guides, feeding means for producing a step by step movement of the cleats along the guides, staplers for securing the binding wires to the blanks, and mechanism in front of the staplers for insuring a proper delivery of parts of the blanks to the said staplers and feeding means, said, mechanism includinga gaging or positioning finger for each guide, means for causing the fingers to .enter the guides, held under restraint by direct engagement of thqfingprs with the sides of the cleats, said when in operative position traveling a fistance along said guides, means for aniomeans for holding said elements against said materials, said machine permitting variations in the length of the blanks by simply varying the size of said materials.

A wire bound box blank machine comprising devices for feeding the blank materials, mechanism for wiring the materials together, and elements for relatively positioning said materials, by direct engagement therewith, having a limited amount of travel with said materials while in the path thereof, and held out of said path in inoperative position by direct contact with the moving materials positioned thereby, said machine permitting variations in the size of said materials to vary the length of the blanks, and a spring for forcing said elements against said materialsand into the patl thereof. 29. A Wire bound box blank machine comprising devices for feedin the blank materials, mechanism for wiring the materials together, and elements for relatively p'osi tioning said materials, by direct engagement therewith, having a limited amount of travel with said materials while in the path thereof, and held out of said path by direct contact with the moving materials positioned thereby, together 'ith constantly acting means for holding said elements against said materials, said machine permitting variations in the length of the blanks by simply varying the size of said materials and a guide for the materials, said elements movable transversely of said guide, and also in a direction parallel therewith.
