Description

that@ .Sitter WILLIAM S. TOOKER, OF KINGSBOROUGILNEW YORK, ASSIGNORTO HIM-- SELF AND ELLIOT THOMAS, OF SAME PLAGE.
` Letters Patent No. 108,849, dated November 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
T0 u whom t ma?! 607mm: for the thumb at the base of the inner part. This Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Toonen, of Kings borough, in the county oflFulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gloves and I It consists in making the back part for the hand Y and wrist and arm of a gauntlet in one piece of peculiar form; the front of the arm pieee, part of the wrist, and the back of the thumb, in another piece; and in the manner ofcombining them with thepalm pieces for the hand, and the piece for the inner side of the thumb, all as hereinafter described. f
Figure 1 is a diagram of the part for the'baek of the hand, wrist, and forearm;
Figure 2 is a diagram of the part for the front of' the forearm and wrist, and the back of the thumb; Figure 3 is a diagram 'of the part for the palm; Figure 4, a diagram of the part for the inner side of' the thumb; and Figure 5 is a view of a pair of gloves, made according to my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I make the back in one piece, as shown in fig. 1, of which the: part A, isfor the hand, B the wrist, and C the wide part, which extends up the arm.
The part D, g. 2, is for the front oi the part for the arm; E, a part ofthe wrist; and F, the part for the back of the thumb. rlhese are also formed in one piece.
G represents' the part for the palm of the hand, and
.S the part which joins onto the part E of the piece shown in g. 2, to complete the wrist.
H is the piece for the inner side of the thumb.4 The part G has thenotch I out in it to make room part and the palm piece H of the thumb are united as shown in fig. 5, and as hereinafter described.
The edge a of part Gr, and l) of part A, are stitched' together', thc points cl e being placed together; from there to j, the edges g of part B C, and hof part E 4 l), are stitched together, the point i of part Fbeing joined to l and e ,-v then the edge L of F, is stitched to G, along the line from e to l; at this point the thumbpiece His inserted with the point m next to l, and thel edge 1 2-, is stitched to o, and 11 and p to L and L', respectively; then the edges lr s are stitched together, after which the other' parts necessary to be joined are stitched together, as in the manufacture of other gloves.
By this construction, the cross-seam usually made `between the backs parts for the hand andlwrist isy avoided; also, the seam across the base of thc thumb at the back, thereby making a much neater glove.
The palm G is also so made as to extend over that portion only oi' the glove subjected to the greatest wear, so that no unnecessary waste ot' material will occur in removing it, when `too much worn in any part, for thc application of' a new one.
The side pieces of the iingers are shaped and united to the other parts in the usual manner.
vHaving thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by-Letters Patent- Y v As an improved article of manufacture, a gauntlet, the back of which is formed in one piece, as represented by A B C, the front of the arm piece, and
part of the wrist D E, and the back of the thumbv F, v f A.
also formed in one piece, as` shown, and both combined with the pahnportion G '.I-I, all substantially as specified.
' WILLIAM S, TOOKER.
Witnesses H. G. Esos, A CALVIN W. THOMAS.
