A STRAINER.
To all wiom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAnLEs R. VINQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing'-i`n the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acoompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.`
My invention relates to improvements in strainers and is intended principally for use in hopper closets to strain the water which fiows through a small duct in order to accomplish the gradual Closing of the valve of the closet, it being essent-ial that some means be provided to prevent the small duct from becoming clogged and thus interfering with the proper operation of the device.
The purpose of the invention is to so mount a strainer as to make it efiicient for this class of work. 'Other specific objects will appear as I proceed with the description of that embodiment of the invention, which for the purposes of the present application is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a longitudinal section of a valve casing with a valve stem in elevation and showing my improved strainer mounted in the easing around the valve stem.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the valve casing which is threaded upon one eXtremity as shown at 6 in order to receive an end cap 7, the latter being provided centrally with an Opening 8 through which slides a valve sten 9. Of course, it should be understood that the element 9 need not necessarily be a valve stem as the invention might well be applied to apparatus other than a valve. A disk shaped packing 10 is interposed between the cap 7 and the casing 5, being suitably cut away at the middle for the reception of the stem 9.
The extremity of the casing 5 is rabbeted upon its inner side at 12 to receive a flange 13 upon an annular member 14: which has an inwardly extending corrugation 15 run- Specification of Letters Patent.

ningthroughout its whole circumference. A flat ring 16 is arranged concentric with the annular member 14 and surrounds the stem 8 sufiiciently closely to make a good sliding connection. Upon the side toward the valve, the ring land the annular member 14 are joined by reticulated material 17 which entirely covers the space between the two elements.
In the corrugation 15 there is an Opening 18 to connect the inside of the casing with the annular passage 19 between the member 14: and the casing and ,this passage in turn connects with a short duct 20 leading to a duct 21, these ducts being small enough to permit fluid in the casing to pass therefrom at a comparatively slow rate only.
From the above disclosure, the operation of the device will be understood. Attention may be called tothe fact, however, that in the construction shown, it is a very simple matter to remove the strainer for purposes of `cleaning,' it being necessary only to unscrewthe cap 7 and then slide the packing 10 and the strainer device out upon the stem 9. This it will be apparent is an important desideratum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a cylindrical casing a filtering device composed of inner and outer rings connected by mesh material, the outer ring fitting closely within the casing and having an eXterior circumferential groove and an Opening to permit water to flow to the groove.
2. In combination with a cylindrical casing, a filtering device adapted to fit closely within said casing, said device including a ring arranged to contact with the inner wall of the casing, and a diaphragm of nesh material secured to one edge of the ring, said rng having an eXterior circumferential groove and an Opening to permit water to flow to the groove.
