JOSEPH Gr. SUTTON, OF SENECA, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN TRIPOLI COMPANY, OF SENECA, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
WATER-FILTER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 2, 1904:. Serial No.` 235,136.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Seneca,
in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Filters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that character of water-filters adapted to be connected to house water-service pipes for the purpose of supplying household needs for filtered water, the object of the invention being to make a filter of simple construction and one in which the filter-cylinder may be readily withdrawn from the case in which it seats without the water present in the filter-case being withdrawn with the filter-cylinder, but linstead being allowed to discharge from the lower t end of the case.
Figure I is a vertical section taken through my filter. Fig. II is a cross-section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical section of a modified form of my filter.
1 designates the case of the filter, which is preferably of cylindrical shape. The upper mouth end of the cylinder is open and the lower or outlet end ofthe cylinder is contracted to' furnish a funnel-shaped discharge-neck 2. The contract'ed neck is preferably soldered to the filter-case, and it serves to prevent splashing of water when the filter-cylinder is removed from the case. At the upper and lower ends of the case are annular outwardly-presented beads 3, that serve to provide annular pockets 4 at the'interior of the case. These pockets receive packing-rings 5, preferably of rubber, and the interior diameter of which is less than the interior diameter of the filtercase, as seen in Fig. I. f
6 designates a filter-cylinder, preferably of tripoli stone, and 7 is a perforated tube eX- tending longitudinally through the said filtercylinder.
8 is an end cap, that is tted to the lower vend of the filter-cylinder and secured to the lower end of the perforated tube 7, the said end cap having a fiange that encircles the stone, as seen in Fig. I'. A gasket 9 is preferably introduced -between the end cap and the end of the lter-cylinder.
10 is an upper end cap, that is provided with a flange that encircles the upper end of the filter-cylinder yand lis connected tothe perforated tube, a gasket llbeing preferablyinp troduced between said end cap and cylinder. The upper end cap is also provided with a horizontallyextending annular flange 12,`
which is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the filter-case l.
'13 is a discharge-tube, centrally fitted in the upper end cap and having communication with the interior of the perforated tube 7 this discharge-tube serving as an outlet` through which the filtered water that percolates through the filter-cylinder into the perforated tube 7 finds escape. to a water-service pipe through any -suitable connection attached to a nipple la', projecting from the filter-case.
By constructing the filter as describedandl v placing the packing-rings--I in Apockets in the filter-case, the interior diameter of which is Vless thanthe interior diameter ofthe case, I
ter as the one herein described have hereto-y vfore been made, but in which the packing members are carried by the filter-cylinder.
vIn these constructions the lower packing member rides against the interior of the case when the filter-cylinder vis extracted, and therefore the water in the space between the filter-case and filter-cylinder is lifted in a column and discharged over the top of the filtercase, which is an objectionable occurrence I completely overcome in my filter.
In Fig. III, I have illustrated a modification of my filter in which the essential features of my improvement are present, though the filter-cylinder `partsvare of different construction. In this modification, 1 designates the filter-case, having the contracted neck 2 at its lower end and provided with the beads 8', containing pockets 4, inwhich the packing-rings 5 areseated. der, in which isthe perforated tube 7 8 is acement cap that is lapplied to the lower end of the filter-cylinder, which is cut out to per- PatenteaAug.1,1eo5. f l
The filter maybe united 6 is the filter-cylinmit of the cap tting thereinto in order that the cement may securea firm hold upon the threaded end of the perforated tube 7. The pores of the cap are suitably closed to prevent seepage of water therethrough. In the center of this cap is a bushing 8, that receives a nipple 8b, through which the filtered water finds escape. 10 is an upper pore-sealed cement cap that is applied to the upper end of the filter-cylinder, which is also cut out to permit of the cap seating therein. The Vcap l0 contains a bushing IO, into which is introduced the shank of a handle 10b, by which the filter-cylinder may be lifted from its ease. This construction is such that, if desired, the filtered Water may be discharged from the upper end of the cylinder, the only change necessary being the removal of the handle 10b in the introduction of a discharge-pipe similar to that 13 and the removal of the nipple 8b and the substitution of a plug to close the bushing 8.
The packing-rings 5, placed in the filtercase as described, are so located that they are not susceptible to injury when the filter-cylinder is introduced into its case er removed therefrom and being loosely fitted in the beads of the filter-case may be readily removed Without the employment of any tool and replaced by new ones when they become unfit for further use. The rings fit firmly in the beads, and there is no liability of their becoming displaced When the filter-cylinder is removed to be cleansed. An additional advantage in placing the packing-rings in the filter-ease instead of applying them to the filter-cylinder lies in the fact that when the filter-cylinder is cleansed, usually by the process of brushing it, the packing-rings being entirely absent therefrom are not subjected to the wear that occurs in cleansing the cylinder in constructions wherein the packingrings are applied to the filter-cylinder. A still further feature of advantage lies in the fact that a more perfect lit of the packingrings is secured dueto the water entering the filter-case acting to seat the packing-rings with greater force into the space between the filter-cylinder and its case, thereby 'making a more perfect joint that will not permit of the water dripping from the filter.
I claim as my invention- In a water-filter, the combination of a cylindrical case open at both ol its ends and provided at each end with an outwardly-presented bead forming an annular pocket, a filter-cylinder within said cylinder and spaced from the inner wall of the case throughout its entire height, and a packing-ring in each of said pockets and engaging said filter-cylinder at points inwardly from the ends thereof.
JOSEPH G. SUTTON.
