WILLIAM P. PITT, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO IRVING-PITT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION 0F MISSOURI.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification ofV Letters Patent.
y Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed November 8, 19111. Serifal No. 659,143.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM P. PITT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to 'improvements in leaf binders in which a clamping member, to
which is hinged a cover, is adapted to be adjustably mounted on parallel supporting posts. j One object of my invention is to provide a cheaply made, strong and efficient hinge mechanism for connecting the cover -to the clamping member.
A further object ofmy invention is to provide a tubular clamping member with novel means for preventing the ends of the clamping member cutting through themateria-l with which the clamping member may be bound,
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, Figure l is a plan view of my improved clamping member shown attached to a cover, a portion of which 'is broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the clamping member. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line ze-b of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the body of the clamping member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the caps. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the hinge members. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the body of the clamping member, showing one of the slots fo-r receiving one of the hinge members.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the dierent views.
The clamping member in the preferred form of my invention comprises preferably a body formed from sheet metal into the form of a flattened tube designated by 1 and having curved sides one of which is provided with one or more transverse slots 2, each of which is provided with enlarged end portions 3 and a narrower or contracted intermediate portion 4. In the slots 2 and interlocked with the body 1 are mounted hinge members, each preferably formed of sheet metal and having a central barrel or eye 5 adapted to receive a pintle 6. Each hinge member is provided with two laterally extending arms 7 tted in the intermediate portion 4 of one of the slots 2, and provided with enlarged ends or heads 8 respectively fitted in the enlarged portions 3 of said slot. The slots 2 extend transversely across the curved sides of the body 1, soV that the end portions 3 and intermediate portion 4 are not located in the same plane. By means of this construction, when the arms 7 A are forced into the slots 2 during the process of manufacture, the hinge members will be interlocled with the body 1 so thatrthey can not be accidentally detached therefrom. Pivoted to the pintle 6 is a leaf Q'Wliichis secured to the cover board 10.
The leaf 9, cover board 10, hinge members 5 and body 1 may be covered, in the usual manner, with any suitable binding material, not shown. In order that the sharp ends of the body 1 may not cut or wear the binding material, I preferably provide for the ends of the body caps 11, preferably drawn from sheet metal. to a size and shape such that the edges of the caps will respectively abut against the ends of the body 1. The body 1 has each end provided with a plurality of slots 12 into which respectively extend projections 13 which are provided on the adjacent cap 11. The slots 12 and projections 13 are so disposed relatively that lateral movement of the caps relative to the body 1 will not occur. In the drawing I have shown two slots 12 disposed diametrically opposite each other in the curved sidewalls of the body 1, and two slots disposed respectively in the top and bottom of the body 1 and intermediate of the slots in the side walls. This arrangement of the slots prevents lateral movement of the caps relative to the body. The projections 13 which are mounted in the slots 12 in the top and bottom of the body 1 prevent lateral horizontal movement of the caps, while the projections 13 which are located in the slots 12 in the side walls prevent vertical movement of the caps relative to the body 1. The outer ends of the caps 11 are rounded at their edges, thereby present-- ing no sharp edges to cut the binding material. The slots 2 and 12 may be punched in the body 1 while it is in the flat.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modificaj tions, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is :f
l. Ina loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having in its wall va slot having a contracted portion between its ends, and a hinge member fitted in said slot and interlocking with the clamping member.
2. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a curved wall provided with a slot having a contracted portion be tween its'ends, and a hinge member fitted in said sloty and interlocking with .the clamping member.
3. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having in its wall a slot, and a hinge' member having two laterally extending arms fitted in said slot and interlocking with the clamping member.
4. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having in its wall a slot having a contracted portion between its ends, Vand a hinge. member having two laterallyk extending arms fitted in said slot and interlocking with the clamping member.
5. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a curved wallv provided with a slot having a contacted portion between its ends, and a hinge member having two laterally extending arms fitted in said slot and interlocking with the clamping member. Y
6. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member-having a curved wall provided with a seat having a contracted portion between its ends, and a hinge member having an eye adapted to receive a pintle, and fitted in said seat and interlocking with the clamping member.
7. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a wall provided with a seat having enlarged end portions and a contracted intermediate portion, and a hinge member having portions respectively fitted in said end and intermediate portions, said end and intermediate portions not being lo` cated in the same plane.
8. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a wall provided with a seat having enlarged end portions and a narrower intermediate portion, and a sheet metal hinge member having a middle portion formed into a barrel and having two arms fitted in said intermediate portion of the seat the arms having heads respectively fitted in the enlarged end portions of the seat.
9. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a tubular body one end of which is provided with slots, and a cap having projections respectively fitted in said slots, the slots and projections being arranged to prevent lateral movement of the cap and body relative to each other.
l0. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a tubular body the ends of which are provided each with slots, and two caps mounted respectively on the ends of the body, each cap having projections fitted respectively in the slots of the adjacent end of the body, said slots and projections being arranged to prevent lateral movement of the caps relative to the body.
11. In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a tubular body one end of which is provided at opposite sides of the body with two slots, and a slot intermediate of said two slots, and a cap mounted against said slottedend and having projections respectively fitted in said slots.
12.l In a loose leaf binder, a tubular clamping member having a tubular body one end of which is provided at opposite sides of the body with two slots, said end having two Vslots located respectively at opposite sides Aof the body intermediate of said first named slots, and a cap mounted against the slotted end of the body and having four projections respectively fitted in said slots.
13. In a loose leaf binder, a clamping member having a tubular body and a cupshaped hollow cap closing one end thereof and having its outer surface iiush with the outer surface of the body, the cap having means for holding it from lateral movement relative to the clamping member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
