WELL-SAW.
Application filed November 13, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT T. FAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bassfield, in the county of Jefferson Davis and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app-ertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to well saws or curbs, and has for its object to provide ameans whereby the metal or wooden tubing inserted in a narrow bored Well such as oil wells and the like, may be sawed or cut to various lengths, for the purpose of removal and the substitution of new lengths therefor.
Heretofore it has been the custom to provide rotary saws to be inserted in wells, but it has been found that these saws are very unsatisfactory by reason of their non-adjustable qualities with respect to the boring of the well, and it is the object of the present invention to overcome this objectionable feature and construct a saw which will be readily adjustable to various diameters of wells of various sizes and characters.
It also contemplates the construction of an oil well wherein there will be a direct transmission from the source thereof, and a shaft for the purpose of rotating the saw, thereby greatly increasing the efficiency, etc. of the well.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, the saws thereof being projected therefrom; Fig. 2 is a central, vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a well saw or curb; Fig. l is a top plan view of a saw and one of the saw blades; and Fig. 5 is a section taken along line 55 of F 1.
The well saw or curb forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a support adapted to engage the top or curb of a well, having mounted for rotation therein a tubular shaft which is provided with any suitable means of power of transmission at the top thereof. rigidly secured to the said shaft at the lower terminal thereof, and is adapted to rotate therewith, said piston being provided with any suitable gasket. Mounted transversely upon the said shaft, adjacent to said piston, is any suitable bearing, said bearing being rigidly secured to said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith, and has transversely mounted therein a plurality of saw blades, which will be hereinafter more fully de scribed. These saw blades are adapted to swing to and from said shaft or hearing in such a manner that the same will be adjustable to various diameters of curbs. A trans verse shaft is mounted at the top of the vertical rotatable shaft and has secured thereto flexible members for drawing said saws within the body of the hearing when it is desired to place the well saw or curb within the well, or remove the same therefrom.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a suitable tubular shaft having a suitable transverse piston at the lower terminal thereof, said piston being provided with a suitable flexible gasket, which extends entirely through said piston, and provides means for retaining the water or oil below the plane of the saw portion. A support 13 is mounted upon the shaft 10 in such a manner that the shaft is free to rotate therein, said support being constructed with a plurality of arms 14 adapted to engage the top of the well or the curb thereof for the purpose of providing means whereby the shaft 10 may be lowered into the well to various depths, as desired. A beveled gear 15 is rigidly secured to the shaft above the support 13, and cooperates with a similar gear 15, which operates on the driving shaft 16, thereby imparting a rotary motion to the shaft 10 upon the rotation of the driving shaft 16.
A bracket 17 is rigidly mounted on the upper terminal of the shaft 10 and has mounted in the vertical bearings 17 thereof, a rotary shaft 18, said. shaft being provided with a suitable power transmission device 19 whereby the same may rotate as desired. A ratchet wheel 20 is rigidly secured to the shaft 18 and cooperates with a pawl 21 mounted on the adjacent bearing 19 where by the shaft may be retained in various positions.
A hearing 22 is rigidly mounted on the shaft 10 adjacent to the piston 11 and is provided with a peripheral groove 23. The
bearing 22 is provided with diametrical projections 24, which, at their terminals, are provided with the depressions 26, said depressions providing housings for springs, as will hereinafter be more fully described.
Pivoted in the groove 23, on each side of the projections 24:, are the supports 27, the pivotal points'of which are located at opposite terminals to the, projections 24, said supports carrying suitable saw blades 28, said blades being countersunk within the supports 27 and are provided with the projections 29. A flexible member 30 is secured to each projection 29 and extends over the pulley 31 mounted in the shaft 10 and up through said shaft, said flexible member 30 1 converging into a single or flexible member 30 wound about the shaft 18. It will be understood that by exerting the pull upon the flexible member 30, by the rotary motion of the shaft 18, the saws are drawn within the recess 23, and are completely within the bearing 22. A spring 32 is interposed between each bearing 27 andthe adjoining 7 leased, permitting the saws 28 to project from the bearing 22. Power is then applied copies of this patent maybe obtained for to the shaft, as heretofore described, i1n-- oted in the peripheral groove, saw blades at tached to the supports, springs attached to said saw blades and to said bearing and housed within said depressions and means for retracting the saw blades within the bearing.
2. In a well saw, the combination with a shaft, of means for rotating said shaft, a bearing on the shaft, laterally adjustable saws mounted in the bearing, springs actuating said saws circumferentially outward, a pulley mounted on the shaft, and a flexible member mounted on the pulley to retract said saws circumferentially within the hearing in opposition to the springs.
