Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB C. EICHHORN, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR TO THE VICTOR JAR COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CLOSURE FOR VESSELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB C, EIoHHoRN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in C10- sures for Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invent-ion relates to a jar closure and seal whereby a wide mouthed vessel may be readily sealed by means which are applied without the use of tools and which are arranged to permitthe removal and replacement of the receptacle closure as desired without difficulty or inconvenience to the user.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and. pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a receptacle closure and clamping means therefor that embody features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the upper portion of the vessel, partially broken away and partially in section; Fig. 3 is a view in perspec: tive, enlarged, of a clamping strip.
Referring to the drawings a receptacle 1 has a flange 2 encircling its mouth which is of the full diameter of the vessel. A closure 3 of appropriate shape and design, has a rim at that conforms to and rests on the flange 2 over an interposed washer 5 of suitable material, when the closure is in position. The rim has a hollowed or concave upper face 6. Clamping strips thatconsist each of a body 7 bent to conform to the peripheries of the flange 2 and rim 4 with lower inturned lugs 8 underrunning the flange 2 and upper spring fingers 9 each preferably opposite a lug S, are disposed at intervals around the mouth of the vessel. The fingers 9 of each strip are bent to conform to the curved face Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1'7, 1912.
Patented Feb. 24,1914.
Serial No. 709,885.
6 of the rim l their outer ends being upturned and the spacebetween the bend of each finger and the inner face of the opposing lug being less than the distance between the marginal edges of the flange 2 and rim 4 so that when applied the fingers snap into posit-ion and compress the washer or packing ring. To facilitate the removal of the strip the end portions 10 thereof extend beyond the fingers 9 and are bent outward slightly for finger pulls whereby the strips may be readily removed. As a result of this construction a closure may be readily attached to a receptacle without the use of tools and the joint at the mouth thereof be made tight, the closure being removable and replaceable at will.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a comparatively flat strip adapted to engage a segmental portion of said receptacle and extending longitudinal y of the meeting edges of said closure and said receptacle, spaced apart lugs and fingers carried by the marginal edges of said strip and adapted to frictionally and detachably engage said receptacle and the closure thereof, said strip having the ends thereof bent in a plane directed from the periphery of said receptacle whereby the ends of said strip can be gripped and said strip removed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
JACOB C. EICHHORN.
lVit-nesses ANNA M. Donn, Orro F. BARTI-IEL.
