WALTER BREWITT, OF ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR, GERMLNY.
APPARATUS FOR USE IN BUTT-WELDING THE ENDS OF RAILS.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, W.'-n;r1:n Bnnwrr'n'a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and resident of Essen-on-the- Ruhr, in the German Empire, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Use in Butt-\V'elding the Ends of Rails of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention refers to an improvement in apparatus for alining and drawing together rail ends to be butt-welded.
It is old to aline rails by means of guides lying along the heads of the rails, and by means of clamp devices accurately secured to the rail-heads. If used for instance with grooved rails, projections shaped to fit the groove were provided on the guide devices. This arrangement was chiefly intended for use with straight rails, and for curved rails different guides were necessary for curves of difi'erentradii.
Now the present invention consists in making provision for enabling the clamping and guiding device to be used with curved rails. According to this invention the guides are so constructed that they may be easily engaged with a rail of any curvature in direction. The horizontal alinement of the rails is produced however by fixed and movable projections or recessed members which are connected to the guides in a manner corresponding to the curvature of the rails.
In order to enable the invention to be readily understood reference made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is 'a transverse section of the new or improved apparatus attached to grooved rails the section being taken *upon the line A--B of Fig. 2, but showing the eccentric with its projection in side eleva tion. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the device. Fig. 3 is a side and plan view of the guide. Fig. 4: is a diagrammatic plan view of the whole device.
Referring to the drawings 3 8 indicate the ran ends, m m the yokes or saddles mount ed on the rail heads, a the ordinary clamps, '21 the special clamp, the bolt cf which is adapted to force down into the groove of the rail. a. wedge or tongue, (Z cl the guide rods paming through. sleeves in the yokes or saddles Mim and fittedwith nuts 1', and Z the guide plate or bar adapted to lie along the rail head and to engage the latter.
Now according to these improvements the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 14, 1911.
be provided shown in Patent-ed Feb. 2st, 1914.
Serial No. 649,335.
- v I A guide bar Z instead. of engaging the rail for a considerable distance as by means of a rlb,
in the case of a grooved rail, provided with a finger or projection 0 at one end and near the opposite end is formed with a hole '1' in which is inserted a revoluble plug or disk 7) formed or provided with an eccentric pin which may be turned by suitable means as for example by the square head shown.
It will now be understood that upon the yolres or saddles being applied to the rail ends 5- 8 and fixed by the clamps n z', the projection or finger 0 onthe guidebar or plate Z lies in the groove of the rail and the disk or plug 2; adjusted so that its projection also lies in the groove in such relation with the projection 0 as suits the curve with which the rails are to conform. These projections thus fix the lateral direction of the rail ends .5 5 while the latter are being drawn together owing to theturning of the nuts f which results in the saddles mm being moved along the rods (Z (Z It will be seen that the disk or plug p 32 of each of the saddles or yokes m m can be turned so as to move the corresponding projection r (/1 into such relative positions as will suit right or left handed curves of different radii as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4. Or the projection can be moved to a middle position to suit straight rails. A scale and indicator may be provided for indicating the proper adjustments to be made .o r the different curves. For example a circular scale may 2 upon the plate Z aroundthe hole 1' and any suitable indicator or indicating point on'the ing p may be used in conjunction With the scale. In Fig. 2 an arrow is indicated for this purpose. If the plug 7) be turned after the projection has been engaged with the groove in the rail head. the rail will be adjusted to 'the true position of coincidence with the curve which it is desired to give to the track.
hat I claim is;
