Description

H .VASDAHL.- ADJUSTABLE BAIL CLAMP. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7, I917.
LQWQVL Patented Jan. 8,1918.
FIEEJ.
WITNESSES INVENTOR HANS VASDAHL, OF SWISSVALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR .TO MoCLINTIC-MARSHALL COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ADJUSTABLE RAIL-CLAMP.
Patented, Jan. a, rare.
Application filed November 7,1917. Serial No. 200,678.
To all who/nit may] concern Be it known that I, Hans Vnsunnn, a citizcn of the United States, residing at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of-Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements in clamping or fastening devices, and more particularly to adjustable devices of the character mentioned. designed to be employed for adjustably securing locomotive, traveling crane, or other moving vehicles or machinery track rails to steel girders, beams, string- (118301 other carrying members.
In such constructions it is frequently necessary to adjust the position of the rails relatively to the center line of the load car- 2 rying members, and the prime object of the present invention is to provide simple and eflicientmeans to enable such adjustments to be readily and accurately made.
1 In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a rail, rail supporting members, and my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view embodying my invention with the rail and supporting mem bers omitted; i
Fig. 3 is a detail, view showing an aperturcd disk or washer member; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the cap member employed in. my construction.
Referring to the"d1.'awings, 2 designates a rail and 3 a supporting member in the form of a girder having a plate fl: mounted thereon and designed to receive the base portion of the rail 2.
The clamping or fastening device, as illus,
trated and as preferred, comprises a plate or body portion 5 formed with a plurality of circular openings 6 and having a slightlv upwardly inclined projection 7 designed to conform to the configuration of the upper surface of the rail base and a portion of the web of the rail. \Vhile I have shown two openings 6 in the body portion, it will be evident that a single opening or more than two openings may be employed. In practice, these fastening or clamping devices are disposed at suitable intervals on both sides of the track.
.55 Located within each opening 6 of the body the said element.
portion is an eccentrically mounted clement, disk or washer S. In addition to the bolt receiving hole 9 the eccentrically mounted element is provided with tool engaging means 10. As shown, the tool'enga'ging means con- '60 sists of a hole, slot or other opening formed in the periphery of the said element' The eccentrically mounted element 8 is designed to rest within the opening 6 upon a tiller piece ll disposed between the plate l and. the under side of the body 5, said filler as well as the plate at having alined openings 12 and 13 to receive a bolt 11.
15 designates a cap or'cover designer, to fit over the eccentrically mounted element 8. This cap is provided with an eccentrically disposed opening 16 through which the bolt 14 is inserted in securing the parts together. Said cap'is also formed with a tool engaging opening 17, said opening being designed when the cap is in one position relatively to the eccentrically mounted member 8 to register with the opening or slot formed therein, thereby enabling member 8 v and cap 15 to be movedin unison by means of a suitable tool or wrench 18. The wrench or tool, as illustrated, has an end portion 19 suitably formed to embrace the head or nut of the securing bolt ltand is further provided with a down ardly projecting lug 2O designed to engage the means 10 of the eccentrically mounted element and the walls of the opening 17 of the cap.
lVhile it is designed to move the cap and element 8 together in effecting the desired 9 adjustments, it should be understood that the cap may be moved independently of the element in order to move the opening 17 out of register with the tool engaging means of 5 V 9 In Fig. 1, it will be noted that the position of the parts shows the rail ad usted inwardly relatively to the center line a of the carrying member, to its extreme nward po sition. The adjustment of the rails into the 1 0 position illustrated, as well as the adjustment in the opposite direction, may oe readily and accurately effected by turnlng the eccentrically mounted element by manipulating the tool or wrench.
lVhat I claim is 1. An adjustable clamping device for falls including a body member having a circular opening, an eccentrically mounted element provided with tool engaging means diSP 1 through said cap, body and element.
in the opening, and a bolt passed through the said body member and element.
2. An adjustable clamping device for rails including a body member havinga circular opening, an eccentrically mountedelement disposed in the opening, a cap mounted on the body over its opening, and a bolt passed 3. An adjustable clamping device for-rails including a body member having a circular opening, an eccentrically mounted element provided with tool engaging means disposed in the opening, a cap mounted on the body over its opening, and a bolt passed through said cap, body and element.
At. An adjustable clamping device for rails including a body member having a circular opening, an 7 eccentrically mounted, element provided with toolengaging means disposed in the opening, a cap mounted on the body over its opening andhaving tool engaging means registering with the tool engaging means of the body, and a bolt passedthrough said cap, body and element. r
5. An adjustable clamping device for rails including an upper body member having a circular opening, a lower member on which the base of the rail rests, an eccentrically mounted element disposed in the opening of the body and providedv with tool engaging means, a filler between the lower member and the eccentric-ally mounted el ement, and
a bolt passed through the body member, fillerand lower member.
.6. An adjustable clamping device for rails including an upperbody member having a circular opening, a lower member onwhich the base of the rail rests, an eccentrically mounted element disposed in the opening of the body and provided with tool'engaging means, a cap mounted on the body over its opening, a filler between the lower member and the eccentrically mounted element, and
a bolt passed through the cap, body member, filler'and lower member.
1 7. An'adjustable clamping device for rails including an upper body member havinga circular opening, a lower member on which the base of the rail rests, an eccentrically Copies of this patent may be obtainedrfor.
mounted element disposed in the opening of the body and provided with tool engaging means, a cap mounted on the body over-its opening and having tool engaging means registering with the tool engaging means of the body, a filler between the lower member and the eccentrically mounted element, and
- a bolt passed through the cap, body member,
filler and lower member.
8. Means for securing rails to load carrying members and for adjusting. the rails relatively to the center line of saidmembers comprising upper and lower platemembers,
said upper plate having a washer receiving washer.
10. Means for securing rails to load carry ing members and for adjusting the rails relatively to the center line of said members comprising upper and lower plate members,
said upper plate having a washer receiving H opening, an eccentric washer havlng tool enj ,-g
gaging, means disposed in said opening, a cap having tool engaging means covering the opening of the upper plate, and a bolt passed through the cap, plate members and washer, said tool engaging means of the cap and washer adapted to be engaged bya com mon tool and moved in unison.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature .inpresence of two witnesses.
