IMPROVEMENT IN HT-AIR FURNApCES.

To all whom it may concern',-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J Anus and WIL- LIAM JAMES, Jr., ot thc city of Montreal, in the District of Montreal, Province ot' Quebec, Dominion ot Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hot-air Furnaces; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved furnace.

Our invention has for its object to improve thc constructionot' hot-air furnaces so as to obtain a greater amount ot' heat ti-om the same amount ot' fuel than is possible with furnacesconstructed in the ordinary manner; and
It consist-s inthe construction and combination of the various parts ot' the furnace, as hereinafter more fully described.

With the upper odge ot' the plate G 'is connected the inner edge of the disl1-shapcd ring-plate I, which is perforated to receive thc lower cnds of the airpipcs J, and with thc outer edge ofwliich is connected the lower cdgc ot the plate K, which forms the walls of the chamber L, which forms a continuation 'or extension ot' thc lire or combustion-chamber H.
At the front of the furnace,
lhe ends of the plat-e K are ext-endedvout to the front .of the furnace, to form the opening for the 1ntroduction of fuel, which opening is closed with a A'closelytting door, M.
` fith theupper edge ot' the plate K is connected the outer edge of the plate N, the middle part a ot' which is made-in the form of an inverted cone, as shown in tig. 1, so as to distribute the product-s ot combustion equally around the outer part of the chamber L, and about the air-pipes J.

forated to receive the upper ends of the air-pipes J, as shown in fig. l The air-pipes J are thus passed 'through the chamber L, and have both their ends open, so that the air may pass through them freely,
and while passing through may be exposed to the full heat of the chamber L.
rIllhc horizontal part of the plate N is also pcrn'ated to receive the lower ends of the short pipes O,tl1'c upper ends ot' which -enter pcrforations in the horizontal part ot'. the base plate ofthe drum l), so that the products ot' combustion may pass through the pipes O from the chamber L to the drum P.
The outer or horizontal parts of the top and bottom plates of the drum ll are perforated to receive the upper and lower ends of the' air-pipes Q, so that the air while passing through said pipes Q may be exposed to the t'nll heat ot' thc products of combustion in the drum l.
The ends of the side plate ot' the drum P are ex tended ont to the front ot' theffurnace, to form an opening closed with a small` door, 1t, for convenience in renwring theashes and cndcrs that may lodge in the said drum l. v
The middle part of the base plate of the drum 1 is bent upward in the shape ot' a truncated cone, and the upper part ot' saidbcnt plate is extended in the form ot' a pipe or-tube, to meet the downwardly-pro-l jecting topplate of the drum` S, thus forming au airtube pipe or passage for the air through the middle parts of the drums l and S, as shown in g..1. The middle part ofthe top plate of the drum P is bent upward to moet the downwardly-projcoting middle part of the bottoni plate of the drum S, thus forming a ring-shaped passage for the products ot combustion to passfthrough trom the drum l to the drum 'lhe ends of the sidc plate of the drum S are extended to the front of the furnace, to form an opening' which is closed with a small door, .l, for convenience in removing the ashes and cinders that may -lodge in the said drum The outer or horizontal' parts of the top and hottom plates of the drum S are perforated to receive the Vupper and lower cnds of the air-pipes U, so that the air, in passing through -the said pipes U,
