To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BRICKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rantoul, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto improvements in clamps and particularly to clamps for fastening the cable of a. drilling machine to its winding drum.
A further object is to provide a clamp of this character which will be simple, strong,
durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and by the use of which one man may readily fasten the cable to and disconnect the same from the drum.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features ofconstruction, and the combination and ar' rangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved clamp showing the parts in open position ready to receive the cable; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the parts closed; Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view partly in section of the clamp with the parts closed or in position for gripping the cable.
My improved clamp comprises a base bar or stationary clamping member 1 in the outer edge of which near one end is formed a cable receiving recess 2 and on one end of which are formed parallel apertured lugs 3. Arranged transversely through the bar 1 near the ends thereof are attaching bolts 4. the heads of which are counter-sunk in the outer edge of the. bar and which are provided on their outer ends with nuts 5 whereby the clamp may be fastened to the winding drum at any desired. position thereon or to the shaft on which the drum is mounted.
Adapted to co-act with the base bar or stationary member of the clamp 1 is a mow able clamping member 6 comprising a bar having on dne end a flattened offset head 7 which is hinged between the apertured lugs 3 of the bar 1 on av pivot pin 8 as shown. The bar 6 when thus connected to the bar 1 is adapted to be swung into engagement with the outer edge of the latter and in the bar 6 opposite to the recess 2 in the bar 1 is formed a substantially semi-circular recess 10 produced by giving the bara bend or loop 9. These registering recesses re ceive the end of the cable when the bar 6 is swung down in operative position on the bar 1 and the clamp thereby securely fastens the' same to the winding drum or other object to which .the clamp is attached. The
free end of the bar 6 is preferably oilset on its outer edge to provide a rounded stop lug or projection 11 and secured inthe bar 6 near the hinged end thereof is an outwardly extending stud'12 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The hinged clamping member or bar 6 is held in operative engagement with the base bar 1 by a lever 13 comprising a bar having.
on one end an offset head 14 which is hingedly or loosely connected to the endof I the bar 1, opposite from that towhich the' clamping member 6 is hinged, by a pair of links 15 the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected to the members 1 and 13 so that they may pass the opposite sides of the free end of the bar 6 as clearly'shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The lever 13 is adapted to be swung down into engagement with the outer side of the clamping member 6 when the latter is in operative position, and in the lever near its free end is formed a bend or loop 16 which overlies and has its inside diameter corresponding with the outside diameter of the-loop or bend 9 in the bar 6 with which said llpdp 16 is engaged when in an"' )perative position,

swinging the lever 13 inwardly to an op-- erative position the lug 11 acts as a cam against which the head 14 of the lever 13 bears, said lever thus forcing the clamping member 6 into tight engagement with the cable and with the bar 1. After the lever has been swung to ai'ull closed position the lug 11 acts as a stop, which holds the lever against casual opening or releasingmove ment, but does not prevent the lever from being manually operated for releasing the cable when desired.
In order to prevent any possibility of the cable slipping When gripped between the clamping members 1 and 6 the inner surfaces of the cable engaging recess 2 and loop 9 of said members are provided with corrugations 18 as shown.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
The herein described clamp comprising a base bar having arecessin its outer edge, a-pair of links pivotally mounted astride one end of this bar; a clamping ba-rhinged cess opposite that in such base, the other end of the clamping bar adapted to be passed between said links and having a lug on its outer edge; a stud projecting from theouter edge of said clamping bar near its hinge, and a lever having ahead at one end pivoted between the outer ends of said links and adapted to engage said lug, its body having an offset bend adapted to overlie that in the clamping bar and beyond said bend a passage adapted to receive said stud and prevent lateral displacement of the parts.
