Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Yor MANs, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos, of which the following is a'specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in silos.
The main objects of this invention are, first, to provide in a structure having a continuous door opening and a plurality of doors, an improved hinge. Second, to provide in a structure having a continuous door opening and a plurality of doors, an improved hinge whereby the doors are supported so ,that they may be superimposed. Third, to provide an improved door hinge by means of which, the door is clamped in place and at the same time, one which may be readily released to open 'thedoor.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from'the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and point-' ed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodimentof my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Referring to the drawing, the structure illustrated, is a circular silo having a continuous door opening, the door casing comprising the angle iron uprights 1. These casing uprights 1 are arranged with their an les facing inwardly to engage shoulders 2 formed on the wall tile 3, a special form of wall tile being used in the structure illus- The' door casin uprights 1 are engage the uprights as shown in Fig. III.
The tile in the structure illustrated, are hollow and provided with notches 6 intheir end and cross walls. See Figs. III and VII.
The hoops 7 are arranged in these notches and embedded in the joint cement 8. See Fig. VII. The hoops are arranged over the cross pieces 4, which are, in practice, spaced to come opposite the joints of the tile in which the hoops are arranged. The hoops are thus entirely inclosed within the wall except where they cross the door openings.
Thedoors 9 are adapted to be superimposed one upon the other so as to form a substantially continuous closure when the doors ai'e closed. At the same time each door when open, is supported independently of the others when the doors are open and any door may, if desired, be left open and those in both their closed and their open position.
My improved door'hinge or support, comprises the arm-like hinge member 10, which is curved rearwardly at its inner end, as at 11, to clear the door casing when the member is swung inwardly through the door opening, the pintle ears 12.being at the end of the rearwardly projecting portion of the hinge member. On the outer end of the hinge member 10, is a pivoted bracket 13, the bracket pivot 14 being vertically dis- .above the open door are eifectively supported posed. The bracket 13 rests on a suitable bearing surface 15 provided therefor-on the arm. The door is provided with, a centrally disposed attaching plate 16 having a vertical slot 17 therein for the attaching bolt 18 carried by the bracket 13. The door is supported on the bolt 18 to permit it to adjust itself to the door below and also in opening it may be lifted up to lift it over any ma tcrial that may be behind the door,that is, it may be lifted a distance corresponding to the length of the slot 17 in the plate 16. The hinge member projects beyond the attaching plate 16 or beyond the center of the door and the bracket pivotis placed at the end of the arm. The door attaching bolt 18 is located on the bracket sothat it lies between the bracket pivot and the hinge pintles when the door is closed. With the parts thus arranged, the bracket serves as an extension for the hinge member 10 when the door is open and the door swings well out of the door opening.
The securing member 19 is pivotally mounted on the bolt 18 and adapted, when in its horizontal position, to engage the door casing upright 1 opposite the upright on which the hinge member 10 is pivoted. The securing member 19 is provided with 2. casing engaging cam 20 at its outer end. It is also provided with an arm 21 at its inner end adapted to engage the keeper 2 on the hinge member 10. This keeper and the arm are provided with cam engaging surfaces so that. as the securing member is forced to its horizontal position, the outer end of the hinge member 10 is forced forwardly and the door clamped in position. The securing member is arranged on the bolt 18 to bear the rear side of the bracket member 13 and when extended engages the hinge member 10, as shown in Figs. I and II.
The clip 23 on the securing member 19 engages over a segmental flange 24 on the bracket 13 for retaining the bracket and the securing member together so that when the securing member is swung down its engagement with the keeper 22 is insured. The keeper 22 limits the downward movement of the securing arm 19, holding it in a substantially horizontal position so that it coacts with the hinge member 10 in forming a step, the hinges and the cross pieces 4 constituting a ladder.
The pintlcs 25'are carried by brackets 26. The pintlcs 25 are provided with lugs 27, and the pintle ears with notched pintle holes 28 adapted when brought into register with the lugs, to permit the ears being engagedor disengaged from the pintles.
The doors are preferably provided with gaskets 29, as illustrated. In closing the doors, the bottom door is first closed and the succeeding doors swung and clamped into position with one resting upon the other. My improved hinge p r tits this so that a continuous closure is provided, although the doors may vary somewhat in length or should one door be clamped slightly out of position, the others may be readily accommodated thereto. When the doors are open, they may be swung entirely clear of the door opening, and it is not necessary that the material in the silo should be below the level of the lower edge of the door as the door can be lifted up and swung around over the material as described, and as the material is taken from under the door, it drops down until it is supported on the pivot bolt 18.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I find to be practical and satisfactory. I am aware, however, that considerable variations in structural details are possible, but as such variations will be suggested to those skilled in this art by the disclosures here made, I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same herein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, in-a structure having a continuous door opening and a plurality of doors adapted to be superimposed, of a hinge member provided with pintle ears, said hinge member being curved rearwardly at its inner end to clear the casing when the member is swung through the door opening; a. bracket member pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hmge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; an attach ing plate centrally mounted on a door, said plate being provided with a vertical slot; a horizontally disposed door attaching bolt carried by said bracket and engaged in said slot of said attaching plate; an adjusting nut for said attaching bolt; a securing member pivotally mounted on said attaching bolt; a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing member when the said securing member is swung into horizontal position, said securing member being provided with a cam at its outer end adapted to engage the door casing, said hinge member and securing member coacting to provide a step; and a clip on said securing member engaging said bracket.
2. The combination, in a structure having a continuous door opening and a plurality of doors adapted to be superimposed, of a hinge member provided with pintle ears, said hinge member being curved rearwardly at its inner end to clear the casing when the member is swung through the door opening; a bracket member pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the bracketpivot being vertically disposed; an attaching plate centrally mounted on a door, said plate being provided with a vertical slot; a horizontally disposed door attaching bolt carried by said bracket and engaged in said slot of said attaching plate; a securing member pivotally mounted on said attaching bolt; and a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing mem said hinge member being curved rearwardly at its inner end to clear the casing when the member is swung through the door openin a bracket member pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the' bracket pivot being vertically disposed; an attach-- ing plate centrally mounted on a door, said plate being provided with a vertical slot; a horizontally disposed door attaching bolt carried by said bracket and engaged in said slot of said attaching plate; an adjust-ing nut for said attaching bolt; a securing member pivotally mounted on said attaching bolt; a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing member when a the said securing member is swung'into horizontal position to engage the doorcasing; and a clip on said securing member engaging said bracket.
4:. The combination, in a structure having a continuous door opening and a plurality of doors adapted to be superimposed, of a hinge member provided with pintle ears, said hinge member being curved rearwardly at its inner end toclear the casing when the member is swung through the door opening; a bracket member pivotally' mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; an attaching plate centrally mounted on a door, said plate being provided with. a vertical slot; a horizontally disposed door. attaching bolt carried by said bracket and engaged in said slot of said attaching plate;'a securing member pivotally mounted on said attaching bolt; and a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing member when the said securing member is swung into horizontal position, to engage the door casing.
In a structure of the class described, the combination of a hinge member; a bracket member pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; a horizontally disposed door attaching pivot carried by said bracket; means for. adjusting said pivot longitudinally; a securing member pivotally mounted on said door attaching pivot; a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing member when the said securing member is swung into horizontal position, said securing member being provided with a cam at its outer end adapted -to engage the door casing, said hinge member and securing member coacting to provide a step; and a clip on said securing member engaging said bracket.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a hinge member; a bracket member pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; a horizontally disposed door attaching pivot carried by said bracket; a securing member pivotally mounted on said door attaching pivot: and a keeper on said hinge member coacting with the inner end of said securing member when the said securing member is swung into horizontal position to engage the door casing.
7. The combination of a hinge member provided with pintle ears, said pintle ears being offset rearwardly; a bracket member pivotally mounted on said hinge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed: a vertically slotted door attaching plate: a bolt carried by said bracketengagingsai'd' attaching plate whereby the door is supported for pivotal and vertical.adjustment on said bolt; and a securing member pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted to engage the door casing, said securing member when in engaging position being adapted to secure said bracket against pivotal movement and to clamp the door against the casing.
8. The combination with a door of a hinge member; a bracket pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member. the bracket pivot being vertically disposed: a door mounted on said bracket; a securing member pivotally mounted on said bracket adapted to engage the door casing: and a. keeper on said hinge member coacting with said securing member when said securing member is swung into horizontal position. said securing member being provided with a casing engaging cam at its outer end, said securing member and keeper having cam engaging surfaces,-allcoacting for the purpose:

9. The combination of a hinge member provided with pintle ears, said pintle ears being ofi'setrearwardly; a bracket member provided with door attaching means pivotally mounted'ou said hinge member. the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; and a securing member pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted-to engage the door casing, said securing member when in engaging position being adapted to secure said bracket against pivotal movement.
10. The combination with a door, of a hinge member; a bracket on which the door is mounted, pivotally mounted on the outer end of said hinge member, the bracket pivot being vertically disposed; a securing member pivotally mounted on said bracket adapted to engage the door casing; and a keeper on said hinge member coacting with said securing member when said securing member is swung into horizontal position, said securing member and keeper having coacting engaging surfaces, all coacting for the purpose specified.
11. The combination with a door, of a hinge member; a bracket pivotally mounted on said hinge member; and a door attaching bolt mounted on said bracket to swing be tween the bracket pivot and the hinge member pivot when the door is closed;
12. The con'ibination with a door of a hinge member, the outer end of said hinge member extending beyond the center of the door when the door is closed, and a bracket pivotally mounted on the hinge member to ccllapse vhen the door, is closed, the'bracket being attached centrally to said door, the point of attachment being between the hinge pintle and the pivot of the bracket when the door is closed so that the bracket serves as a hinge member extension when the door is swung inwardly.
13. The combination with a door of a hinge member therefor, a bracket pivotally mounted on the hinge member to collapse thereon when the door is closed, the point of attachment of the door to the bracket being between the hinge pintle and the pivot of the bracket when the door is closed so that the bracket serves as a hinge member extension when the door is open.
14. The combination with a door, of a hinge member therefor, and means for at taching the door to said hinge member comprising a vertically slotted attaching plate secured centrally to the door and an attaching bolt carried by the hinge member engaging the slot of the attaching plate.
15. The combination in a structure-having a continuous door opening, of a plurality of doors adapted to be superimposed, hinge members, provided with rearwardly ofl'set pintle ears, bracket members pivotally mounted on said hinge members, vertically slotted door attaching plates on said doors and bolts carried by said bracket-s engaging said attaching plates, whereby the doors are supported for pivotal and vertical adjustment on said bolts.
16. The combination in. a structure having a continuous door opening and a plu rality of doors adapted to be superimposed, of hinge members for said doors, vertically slotted attaching members on said doors,
and bolts on said hinge members engaging said slotted members, permitting vertical and pivotal adjustment of the doors relative to their hinge members, whereby they may be superimposed or lifted over obstructions without changing the hinge members or disengaging them from their pivots.
17. The combination in a structure having a continuous opening and a plurality of doors adapted to be sluierimposed, of hinge members for said doors, and a. pin and slot connection for said doors to said hinge mem-- bers permitting vertical and pivotal adjustment, the pivots being horizontally disposed, all com-ting for the purpose specified.
