To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J AMES WV. CLEMMER and HORACE H. BURTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Fargo, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Closing Devices; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door closing devices.
(hie object of the invention is to provide a door closing device having means whereby the door will be quickly closed when opened wide or to a very slight extent in which the closing action of the device will be increased as the door approaches its closed position.
Another object is to provide a door clos ing device which will be simple strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, effident and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is de signed.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a door and its frame showing the application of our improved closing device; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the door frame taken immediately above the door and showing the position of the parts when the door is closed; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the door is open; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the pivoted spring engaging lever of the device; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the link which connects one of the springs of the device with the lever.
Our improved door closing device comprises a lever or bracket 1 which is preferably in the form of a substantially triangular frame and constructed from a wlre rod bent to form a vertical base portion 2 and an angular outwardly projecting brace bar 3 the end of which is turned upwardly to form a pin at. The opposite end of the rod is bent obliquely from the upper end of the base portion to form the upper bar 5 of the lever frame and has formed on its outer end an eye 6 which is' engaged with the pin 4 as shown. The base portion 2 of the brace frame is pivotally secured to the outer side of'the door near the top edge thereof and a suitable distance from the hinged edge of the door by a clip 7 whereby the lever frame is permitted to swing freely on the door. Secured at its inner end to the upper bar 5 of the lever frame is a yoke 8 the outer end of which has formed therein an eye which is engaged with the pin 4t on the brace bar 3 above the eye 6 of the bar 5. The yoke is bent to form a loop 9 and said yoke and loop are disposed on the side of the lever frame toward the free edge of the door.
Connected at its inner end to the door frame immediately above the door and adjacent to one side of the lever frame and between the same and the hinged edge of the door is a main door closing spring 10, the outer end of which is connected by a short link to the pin 4 of the lever frame or bracket. The lever frame or bracket 1 is yieldingly held in an operative position by a coiled supple-mental spring 11 one end of which is secured to the door adjacent to the top and near the free edge thereof and the opposite end of which is connected with the loop 9 in the yoke 8 of the lever frame 1. The main spring 10 is considerably shorter and much stronger than the supplemental spring 11 and in opening the door the outward movement thereof causes the lever frame to stretch the main spring 10. This preliminary opening movement of the door pulls inwardly on the lever frame which for the time is held in position by the resistance of the supplemental spring 11. As the door is further opened the spring 10 will swing the lever around alongside or in line with the outer side of the door to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. As soon as the lever frame 1 has been thus brought into engagement with the outer side of the door a further opening movement of the latter will again stretch the main spring, so that as soon as the door is released, the action of this spring will swing the door back to a closed position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In the closing movement of the door by the main spring, the action of the supplemental spring will again swing the lever frame outwardly at right angles to the door and in position to stretch the main frame when the door is again opened.
By providing the main and supplemental springs and the lever frame or bracket 1 and arranging these parts as herein shown and described, it will be seen that the door will quickly close, even when opened to a very slight extent.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the 'ivention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
A door closing device colnprisingabracket constructed from a wire rod bent to form a substantially triangular frame and consisting of a base portion, an inclined outwardly projecting brace, a pin formed on the end of said brace, and an upper bar extending outwardly from the base portion and having in its outer end an eye engaged with the pin on said brace, a clip to pivotally connect said frame or bracket to the door whereby the latter forms an outwardly projecting lever, a yoke secured at one end to the upper bar of the bracket and at its opposite end to said pin, said yoke having therein a spring attaching loop, a main closing spring connected at one end to the frame of the door and at its opposite end with the pin of said bracket or lever, and a supplemental spring connected at one end to the door and at its opposite end to the loop of said yoke.
