TYPE-CASTING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, GnoRe AMRHEIN, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Munich, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
In connection with molds having undivided cores, for monotype casting machines, it has been proposed to use a plurality of supplementary cores, which can be separately or collectively coupled with the main core, to allow of producing different casts without changing the mold.
The object of my invention is to utilize such supplementary cores in modern molds having divided main cores, so that ordinary and enlarged type-bodies can be produced, with the lower justifiers for each.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mold, with parts removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the bi-partite main core, and Fig. 3
a plan view thereof. Fig. 4 shows the sup-' plementary core, and Fig. 5 shows the two cores together. Fig. 6 shows the cheekpiece fitted to the supplementary core. Figs. 7 and 8 show types produced in the mold. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the core-cheek and supplementary core. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the core-cheek and part of the supplementary core, together with part of the main core. Figs. 11 to 20 and 21 to 22 show the positions of the front parts of the supplementary core and divided main core for producing the four kinds of type referred to. Figs. 11, 14, 17 and 20 are sectional elevations; Figs. 12, 15, 18 and 21 are sections on the lines AB, CD, EF, and GH respectively, and Figs. 13, 16, 19, and 22 are sections on the lines JK, LM, NO, and PQ, respectively.
In the drawing 1 designates the U-shaped base of the mold, with side plate 2 and curve plate 3. Between the core- cheeks 4 and 5 in the mold, the main core consisting of two relatively movable parts 6, 6 (Figs. 2, 3, 5, 10) and the supplementary core 7 (Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 9) are slidable. The cheek 4 is held by a spring plate 25 fixed to the screw block 24, and the cheek 5 is pressed down by a spring plate, not shown, which enters the recess 26 and is fixed to the block 27; 28 is the core abutment, 29

The core 7 of the requisite thickness, for example two typographic points, is aI' ranged at the side 9 of the main core, opposite the signature side 8, and lies against the left hand cheek 4. The latter, instead of being flat on the side facing the core, has at the top and front a laterally projecting nose 11 which is of the same thickness as the core 7 and covers the same when the core is pushed forward to lie under the nose. Against the latter abuts the upper surface 12 of a projection 13 on the front end of the supplementary core. The nose 11 extends downward so far that its under surface corresponds with the surface of the lower justifier. Fig. 9 shows the nose 11 and the core 7, 12, 13, below it pulled back. The exactly fitting surfaces 12 and 31 of the core and nose correspond with the surface of the lower justifier.
The part 6 has in front an extension 32 corresponding to thenose 11 and entirely covering same, when the part 6 is pushed forward so that the front surface of the boss 32 is flush with the front surfaces of theparts 4' and 5. The under surface 31 of the nose 11, guides the core 7, but othermeans for such guidance may be used, for example the core may have enlargements working in the part 4. I
The supplementary core has a laterally projecting fixing nose 14 (Figs. 1 to 4), but
this nose may also be on its underside, made in one piece therewith. At a suitable part of the supplementary core there is a hole 15, and a hole 16 of the same size is provided, at the samev height, at the back of the part 6.
On the base of the mold there is apivoted spring 17, and 18 designates a suitably formed and positioned driver hook.
The manner of using the mold vis as follows (1.) For casting low justifiers with ordinary type bodies (Figs. 11, 12, 13) for example the space between two words, the core 7 is fixed by hand, by means of the spring 17 pressing on its abutment 14, so that its front surface 19 is exactly flush with the surfaces 20 of the parts 4 and 5. The main core 6, 6 is so adjusted by the machine that the boss 32 of part 6 is also flush with the surfaces 20 when the change of stroke occurs, the front surface 33 of the part 6 being so much behind the surfaces 20 as cor responds to the width of the type. The casting takes place at the moment at which the main core changes its direction, and the front parts of the main and supplementary cores then assume, relatively to the core cheeks, approximately the position shown in Figs. 10 and 11. The inner side surface 34 of core 7, the under surface 35 of boss 32, the main core surface 33, the inner side surface 36 of part 5, and a block not shown, lying against the surfaces 19, 20, then surround a cavity, the ground area of which is shown by cross-hatching in Fig. 10. When the type metal is pressed into this cavity a rectangular casting 87 is produced, shown in cross-section in Fig. 13, its length and width being shown in Fig. 11, and its thickness (ordinary type body) in Fig. 12. The upper surface of the casting gives the lower justilier, in the form such castings are used between words, etc.
(2.) For a low justifier with enlarged typo body (Figs. 1 1, 15, 16-) the core 7 is released and coupled with the main core. For this purpose the spring 14- is turned and the core 7 is drawn back till the holes- 15 and 16 coincide to receive the hook 18. The two cores then move collectively in the mold. he core 7 is drawn back fill its surface 19 is flush with the surface 33 of the part 6 (position 19 Figs. 6 and 16). The position of the main core is the same as in the first example. The :asting cavity is thus only enlarged to the extent of the thickness of the supplementary core. The casting 38 produced is thicker than that shown in Figs. 11 to 13, but is otherwise similar.
For casting letter type or other characters with ordinary body (Figs. 17, 18, 19), core? is adjusted and fixed as in the firstexample (Figs. 11 to 13). Lever mechanism of a known type forming part of the machine retracts part 6 so that the surface 39 of boss 32 is flush with the surface of the part 6. The cavity is thus lengthened to the extent of the height of the nose 11, and a casting 410 is produced of the same width as before but of a thickness equal to that in the first example. The length of the casting 10 is equal to the whole height of the cheeks, and the letter or other character 41 is at the upper end.
(4.) For casting type with enlarged body (Figs. 20 to 22) the two parts of the main core are adjusted as in Example 3, and the core '1" is released. as in Example 2, drawn back and coupled with the main core, so that the surface 19 assumes position 19 and the surfaces 33, 39 and 19 are flush. The cavity is thus enlarged to the extent of the thickness of the supplementary core, and the casting -12 is produced, having a shoulder 23, due to the nose 11 of the same height as the low justifier.
Figs. 7 and 8 show the castings 10 and 12 approximately to the scale 1:1.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a type mold for type casting machines the combination with a two-part main core, of a supplementary core (7) and a core cheek abutting against said supplementary core and having a nose (11) covering same for the purpose set forth.
