This invention relates more especially to the class 'of type casting machines wherein the mold-is provided with a divided or seetional mold-blade and means for actuating or adjusting said sections separately, or together, for the production of full-body type or low quads or spaces, after the manner disclosed in application Serial No. 135,632, of
Dec. 17, 1902, and it has for its principal objects to prevent the springing or displace ment of the outer or upper mold-blade section, and to simplify and improve the control devices or mechanism through which the sections are connected for simultaneous action, or disconnected for dissimultaneous adjustment; to which ends the invention consists in the construction, combinations and arrangements of )arts hereinafter fully described, the novel features whereof are set orth in the appended claims.

The upper or cut-ofi' section 9 is in the form of a straight and relatively narrow strip overlying and resting upon the upper edge of the body section 8, and provided with a longitudinal beveled bearing or guiding surface 10, the latter cooperating with an overlapping beveled shoulder on the side block. The bevel 10 extends to a point in close proximity to the casting face of the section, being interrupted at or near the vertical enlargement forming part of the matrix seat at which point the cut-off section is rectangular and of a width corresponding with that of the body section, the side Walls of the mold cavity being maintained in parallel relation. By these means a strong and rigid top guide for the cut-off section is provided, one well calculated to resist the impact and pressure of the molten metal in the mold cavity and to maintain a metal tight joint between the two sections, a condition of the utmost importance, and this too without weakening the upper section by cutting away the material or increasing the vertical dimensions of the mold in a manner to interfere with its use in connection with type casting and composing machines of the class illustrated in Patent 625,998. The better to accomplish this result, i. 0., prevent the springing or displacement of the upper or cut-oil section 9, while at the same time permitting free movement either in conjunction with or independent of the lower or body section 8, the beveled bearing surface 10 is preferably formed upon a lateral extension of the upper or cutol'l' section, thus leaving the body of full vertical and lateral dimensions, with its upper face flush with'that of the side blocks and of a widthsubstantially equal to that of the end portion between the side blocks. To increase its rigidity and facilitate action the rear portion of the cut-off section 9 is provided with a vertical extension or plate 11, off-set to one side of the lane of said section and extending in paral el relation with the rear end of body section 8. This late 11 takes its lower bearing uponthe ower face of the slot in squaring plate..3 along one side of the body section 8, and it, together with the body section, is held down upon said squaring plate and a rear extension thereof by the front stop 6 which is made vertically adjustable for this purpose, so that said front stop, in addition to its normal function as a gage in limiting the extreme forward positions of the two sections, serves as a top guide for the rearlof the two sections by its contact with the lower surfaces of the openings, through which it is passed.
It is to be noticed that the opening in the rear end of plate 11 for the passage of crosspin 7 is longer than that in the body section, to permit the requisite degree'of independent movement of the cut-off section, F
When the mold is employed for producing full-body or character type the two moldblade sections should be maintained in fixed relation to each other with theircasting'faces in the same plane, and when short or low uads and spaces are required, said sections s ould be uncoupled so as to be capable of independent movement, the one to cut-off or Y close the matrix end of the mold and the other, to measure the width of the mold cavity below or in rear of the cut-off. A simple I and effective means for accom lishing these results has been devised and is illustrated, in a preferred form, in the drawings. It consists,-essentially, of a pawl or latch 12 pivot-- ally mounted upon the cut-ofisectionQ m position to engage a shoulder 13 on the body section 8 when the castingfaces of the two sections are in alinement, said latch being coupled with a s ring 14 attached to the mold andprovide with an operating arm 15 in position to" be engaged by a lever 16 or other actuator. As shown ap lied the latch 12 is pivoted upon the side 0 plate 11 near the rear upper corner thereof and its engagingportion extends laterally 1n the form of a web or flange, overplate 11 and the rear portion of the body section 8, while the arm 15 is curved forward and downward to avoid crossspin 7. Both the bodysection 8' and plate 11 are notched, as at.17 to accommodate the overlapping portion of the-latch, and the spring 14 is applied in a manner to advance the latch into engagement with shoulder 13 and to apply pressure to the-upper orcut-ofi section 9 in a direction to advance the latter. With the parts thus con structed and arranged, when it is desired to produce full-body or character type the two mold-blade sections stand with their casting faces in-alinement and the latch 12 in engagementwith shoulder 13, as represented in ig. 2, so that themovements, for adjustment and ejection, communicated to. the cross pin will be transmitted tobothsections of the mold-blade. It will be noted that under these conditions spring 14 operates upon latch 12 to holdit against shoulder 13, said latch and shoulder serving as gaging members for determining the relative position of the two sections to which they are respectively attached. So long -as the two moldblade sections remain thus locked together they operate the same as-an'integral mold blade; and when it is desired to produce a low quad or short-body type, it is only required that pressure should be applied to the latch 12 in a direction to disengage shoulder 13, in the present instance corresponding with the pull of spring '14; The latch can be operated upon directly or through the medium of lever 16, but it is preferably controlled automatically and from the record strip, di

Latch 12 is operated, to disconnect the mold-blade sections during the withdrawal of the cross-pin from theejecting position,Fig:. 4, whereby the upperor cut-off section 9, being no longer controlled by said cross-pin, is advanced or held by its spring 14 in contact with-the opposite wall of the mold-cavity, as seen in Fig. 3, leaving the body section subjectto the action of the cross-pin. After the cast is made the 'body section 8 is advanced to eject the type when both sections contact with the front stop, thus bringing their casting. faces into alinement, whereupon latch 12 reengages shoulder 13 and the two sections are again locked together in position for either simultaneous or dissimultaneous readjustment inthe mold as desired. i
It will be observed that inthe preferred form of embodiment disclosed herein the mechanism for effecting the simultaneous and dissimultaneous adjustment of the moldblade sections, with the possible exception of' the attachment for sprmg 14, -is self contained, and, moreover, that it is applicable to existing forms of mold by the substitution of one side block (that containing the top bearing for the upper section) or the grooving of the same to'accommodate bearing 10 and a slight widening of the slot in block 3 to afford accommodation for the increase in width due to the presence of plate 11.

16. A type mold such as described provided with a mold-blade composed of superposed independently movable sections of which one section is provided with an off-set the other section.
17. A type mold such as described proupper or cut-off section whereof carries an off-set portion in parallel relation to the lower or pivoted latch engaging a shoulder on said body section, thelatter being provided with means for attachment tonthe adjusting devices.
18. A type mold such as described proportion in parallel relation with one side'of such as described, provided with asectional vided with a sectional mold-blade and top guides applied to the rear portions of each of said sections.
19. A type mold provided with a sectional mold-blade and a front stop or gage, the latter engaging said sections to form a top guide therefor.
20. The combination with a type mold mold-blade, a latch carried by one of said sections and interlocking with the other section, of a lever supported in fixed relation to said latch and adapted to contact therewith.
21. In a type casting machine, a matrix, a mold having a slot leading to the face of the matrix, main and auxiliary blades for determining the width of the slot, means for connecting and disconnecting the main and auxiliary blades, and a spring for moving the auxiliary blade forward to cut off the slot at 20 a distance from the matrix when the blades are disconnected.
22. In a type casting machine, a matrix, a type mold having its slot leading to the face of the matrix, main and auxiliary blades for determining the width of the slot, means for disconnecting the blades a spring for moving the auxiliary blade forward to cut ofi the slot at a distance from the matrix and means for moving the main blade forward to eject the lead, connect it with the auxiliary blade and move the main and auxiliary blades back to their normal position.
