Description

A. L. KNIGHT. LOW QUAD TYPE MOLD EQUIPMENT. APPLICATION nLnfn mum, 1910.
980,970. v PatentedJan.10;191l.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS L. KNIGHT, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO LANSTON MONO TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA.
LOW-QUAD TYPE-MOLD EQUIPMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Amos L. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Low-Quad TypeMold Equipment; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements upon the actuating or controlling devices for the sectional mold blades of low quad molds and has for its object to insure registry between the casting faces of the sections when full body or character type are to be cast.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of embodiment of said inventionFig11re 1 is a top plan and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the interlocking latch applied to the actuating devices of a low.
quad mold. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the interlocking latch and its connections.
The invention is shown applied to and constitutes an improvement upon the mold blade actuating devices of Patent No. 962,410, dated June 28, 1910, whereof 1 designates the main or lower mold blade section; 2 the cut-off or upper section; 3 the cross-pin through which the adjusting and ejecting devices are coupled with the main mold blade section; 4 the lever for tlie cut-off section; 5 the lever engaging the main section; 6 the spring coupling the two levers and operating to retract the cut-off section relatively to the main section; and 7 the actuator for the cut-off section in position to engage lever 4 for advancing the cut-0E section independently of the main section when low quads are to be cast.
The arrangement is such that under normal conditions, that is, when actuator 7 is maintained in inoperative relation to lever 4, the casting faces of the two sections are held in alinement by the pressure of spring 6 one end whereof is coupled with and follows the motions of main section 1, while the other end is coupled with the cut-off section through lever 4 and exerts pressure in a direction to force said cut-off section into engagement with a gaging shoulder 8 on the main section.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 16, 1910.
Patented J an. 10, 1911.
Serial No. 567,271.
WVhen a low quad is desired actuator 7 is advanced and through its engagement with lever 4 communicates its motion to the cutoff section in opposition to the pressure of spring 6, the latter operating, when actuator 7 is withdrawn from contact with lever 4, to return the cut-off section and effect its reengagement with gaging shoulder 8, thus reestablishing normal conditions.
It is of the utmost importance that when casting full body or character type the cutoff section should be fully withdrawn and maintained in contact with its gaging shoulder on the main section, as otherwise the cast will be defective owing to the more or less protrusion of the cut-off section within the casting chamber where its face should be in alinement with that of the main section. In the practical operation of the devices this defective action is liable to occur should the cut-off section from any cause become arrested or hung up as it is called, during the retracting, 2'. 6., dimensioning, movement of the main section (which movement, by the way, usually takes place prior to the engagement of actuator 7 with lever 4, although this is of no consequence so far as the adjustment for full body type is concerned) such action being rendered possible by the fact that the cut-off section is retracted against and held in contact with the gage by the elastic pressure of spring 6, the latter yielding in case excessive resistance is opposed to the movement of the cut-off section.
Now the main object of the present improvement is to provide a remedy for this defect and this is accomplished by the addition of means whereby the two mold blade sections will be locked together with the cut-off section in engagement with the gaging member of the main section so that both sections will be under the direct and positivecontrol of the dimensioning devices when full body type are called for, said locking means being in turn controlled by the actuator for the cut-off section, to release the latter and permit it to respond to the action of said actuator when low bodytype or quads are to be cast. To this end a latch 10 is mounted upon lever 4 in position to engage lever 5 when cut-off section 2 is retracted against its gage on the main section. The latch is provided with a s ring 11 tending to advance its engaging en into the path of lever 5, and with a bearing 12 in the path of actuator 7.
Latch 1O retains its engagement with lever 5 as shown in Fig. 1, to prevent separa, tion of the inner ends of the levers while full body or character type are being cast, thereby locking the two mold blade sections together so that they respond, as a unit, to the dimensioning adjustments applied to the main section; and when a low quad is indicated by the movement of actuator 7 the latter engages and withdraws latch '10 see Fig. 2-to disconnect the lovers, and by a further movement engages and shifts lever at to advance cut-off section 2, abandoning main section 1 to the control of the dimensioning and ejecting devices.
The withdrawal of actuator 7 after the :ast is made permits spring 6 to operate as before for the retraction of the cut-off section relatively to the main section, thereby permitting latch 10 to reengage and automatically recouple levers 4i, 5. But if, from any cause, cut-off section 2 is prevented from responding to the pressure of spring 6, the subsequent advance of the main section to ejecting position will effect the engagement of latch 10 so that as the main section is retracted to dimension the mold cavity for the next cast its motion will be communicated to the cut-oil section through the interlocked levers a, 5.
If lever be connected to main section so that the motion of the latter will be transmitted to the former in both directions, as by providing the section with an additional bearing as indicated by dotted lines in rear of the point of attachment of lever 5, spring 6 may be dispensed with, in which case the interlocking of the levers, to retain the sections with their casting faces in alinement, will take place when the main section is advanced to ejecting position. By retaining the spring, however, displacement due to lost motion in the bearings or contacting faces of the levers and latch is compensated for, as after the cut-off section has been started in motion by the positively engaging latch it will be continued. in motion by the spring and thus caused to engage the gaging member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a low quad type mold equipment, the combination of the following elements, to-wit; a sectional mold blade; two lovers each coupled with one of said mold blade sections; and means for detachably interlocking said levers.
2. In a low quad type mold equipment, the combination of the following elements, to-wit; a sectional mold blade provided with opposed gaging members; two levers each coupled with one of the mold blade sections; a spring coupling said levers; and means for detachably interlocking the levers.
3. In a low quad type mold equipment, the combination of the following elements, to-wit; a sectional mold blade provided with opposed gaging members; adjusting devices coupled with one mold blade section two levers each coupled with a mold-blade section; an actuator; and interlocking means for the levers controlled by said actuator.
4C. In a low quad type mold equipment, the combination of the following elements. to-wit; a sectional mold blade with opposed gaging members; adjusting devices coupled with one mold blade section; two levers each coupled with one mold blade section; an actuator for one of the levers; and an interlocking member carried by one lever in po sition to be engaged by said actuator.
5. The combination with a sectional moldblade provided with opposed gaging members, adjusting devices engaging one moldblade section, two levers each engaging a mold-blade section, an actuator for one of said levers and a latch mounted upon one lever and interlocking with the other lever, said latch being provided with a member extending into the path of said actuator.
