ed a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to pocket instruments comprising a holder fitted with articles adapted to slide forward by gravity in their holder into position for use.

The invention provides a very simple construction in which connections of all kinds are dispensed with, and by which on account of the absence of liability to wear and on account of the provision of only one spring, great durability and reliability are insured. The spring which is adapted to assist in holding the instrument in its case or in outermost position serves at the same time as a support and as a pivot for the locking member.

Several embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Wl1lCl1- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flat pencil and case, the pencil being in position ready for use, the outer case and the inner case being partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the pencil however being within the casing; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Figs. 4: and 5sh0w in longitudinal section and in end view partly in section a hexagonal pencil; Figs. 6 and 7 show a simple pen knife in section at right angles to the knife blade and in plan; Figs. 8 and 9 show in longitudinal section and in cross section a casing with several pencils adapted to slide forward into position by gravity (a socalled writing set).

The same references denote like parts throughout the several views.

In the case of the flat pencil, shown in Figs. 1 to 3, or in the case of the hexagonal pencil, shown in Figs. 4: and 5, a casing 6 provided with a longitudinal slot, is arranged in the outer protecting case a, at the rear part of which casing b is secured a U- shaped spring cl, one end being secured, to the end of this casing 5 while the other limb of the spring carries a lever a which lies in the longitudinal slot of the casing b and is provided in proximity to its rear end with a knob f or the like which extends through a corresponding openingin the protecting casing a to the exterior. The spring retains the lever 0 in the position shown in Figs. 1,

2, 4 and 5 in which position its forward end projects into the inner hollow space of the '60 casing Z).

The slidable member 9 which carries the pencil it can freely slide in the casing b when by depression of the knob the lever c is p voted about the spring d as a support and pivot with its forward end outwardly so that on lowering the front end of the instrument-if the member 9 is in position shown in Fig. 2 the said member 9 will fall forward to the corresponding projection or on raising the forward end of the casing when in the position shown in Fig. 1 it slides back into the casing to the spring d, where it is locked by the lever c. As will be observed especially from Fig. 1 the sliding member 9 is of such dimensions that it extends from the resilient projection of the casing b or a (which projection prevents the sliding memberfrom falling out of the case), to the forward end of the lever c which under the action of the spring d is brought behind the sliding member and thus prevents it from inadvertently sliding back.

In the embodiment of the pen knife shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the essential parts are the same as before, with modification in the cross section of the blade; the sliding member e serves as a support for the knife blade is. Instead of a knife any other instrument such as a nail file, tooth pick or the like can be used.

Figs. 8 and 9 show the combination of several articles within a single casing a. In

other of the articles may be arranged so that I it can be entirely detached by pushing back the forward projection which retains the article; for example the knife can be removed in order to sharpen therewith the pencils arranged in the same casing.

Having described my invention what I I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is I 1. A holder for small instruments, of the kind in which the instrument is moved by gravity into and out of position for use, comprising in combination, a casing for the instrument provided with an opening extending lengthwise thereof, a spring located within said casing at one end thereof, a lever extending lengthwise of said casing and adapted to be moved by said spring whereby the lever is caused to enter and leave said opening, and a projection carried by the said spring and extending through the wall of the said casing, whereby the said spring may be actuated, as and forthe purpose set forth.

2. A holder for small instruments, of the kind in which the instrument is moved by gravity into and out of position for use, comprising in combination, a casing for the instrument provided with an opening extending lengthwise thereof, a spring located within said casing and at one end thereof, a lever extending lengthwise of said casing and adapted to be moved by said spring to cause the lever to enter and leave said opening, a second casing inclosing said first mentioned casing, and a projection carried by me os the said spring and extending through both of the said casings, whereby the said spring may be actuated, as and for the purpose set forth.

A. holder for small instruments, of the 3 kind described, in which the instrument is moved by gravity into and out of position for use, comprising in combination, a casing for the instrument provided with an open ing extending lengthwise thereof, a sprin 4 located within said casing and at one end thereof, said spring being formed with limbs and having one of said limbs secured to the said casing, a lever extending lengthwise of said casing and adapted to be moved by said 4 spring'to cause the lever to enter and leave said opening, a second casing inclosing said first mentioned casing, and a projection ca rried by the spring and adapted to move said spring, said projection extending through 5 both of said casings, as and for the purpose set forth.
