WATER-LEVEL-DEMONSTRATING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM F. BUCK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oi' Illinois, have invented a cert-ain new and useful Improvement in lVater-Level-Demonstrating Devices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specication.
My invention relates more especially to a device whereby the effect of track gradient upon the level of the water in the boiler of a locomotive may be graphically demonstrated; the device being so arranged that the per cent. of grade will be indicated and the eiiect or level of any given gage of water in the boiler demonstrated, as will more clearly be understood from the following detailed description.
In the drawings: Figure 1 illustrates my improved device in front elevation, demonstrating the effect on a given gage oi water in the boiler, when a locomotive is on a level; a port-ion of the supporting frame being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of same, illustrating the eiiect on the given gage of water in the boiler when a locomotive is descending a grade of approximately three per cent.; the lower portion of the supporting frame being broken away. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the main or central pivotal point, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l, looking down. Fig. 5 is a detail view, in section, of a tension device employed in connection with the water level indicating mechanism. Fig. G is a front elevation of a modified construction. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of same. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of same, with the lower part of the supporting frame broken away. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 9 9 of Fig. 6.
As an exempliication of my invention, I show the device provided with standards or supporting frame 10, of any suitable construction, having the uniting members 11 and 12, and vertically extending member 13. The frame is designed to stand upon the floor, and is made of a suitable height to adapt it to the uses for which the device is intended. A display board or member 14 is pivotally secured at its center of gravity to frame-member 13, by the pintle 15, whichr Specification of Letters Patent.

is secured to the member 14 in any suitable manner; for example, the pint-le 15 is shown provided with a flange portion whereby it may be secured to member 14, while the outer end thereof is shown screw-threaded to receive a nut or washer as shown in Fig. 4; the pintle 15 is preferably passed through a errule or bushing 15, secured within the opening in frame-member 18. Member 14 is intended to be provided with a longitudinal sectional view of a locomotive boiler; this may either be drawn or painted on member 14, or the drawing may be on a separate board or light frame, and secured to member 14.
Pivotally mounted on the plate or upwardly extending lug 1G is a lever 17, which extends adjacent the upwardly extending slotted member 18, secured on cross-member 2 of the frame; and the lever 17Imay be clamped or held in the desired position by the butterfly-nut 19. One end of lever 17 is pivotally secured to link 20, which link is in turn pivoted to carriermember or board 14, at a point intermediate of the pivotal point 15 and one end of the member 14. The other or -lree end of lever 17 is made pointed, so as to act as an indicator in connection wit-h the scale 21, of suitable description, whereby the per cent. of incline or decline of the link-end of carriermember 14 may be indicated. The scale 21 is rigidly secured to upper cross-member 12.
It is evident from the construction shown and described that the adjusted position of member 14 can be maintained by tightening the clamp 19 and holding lever 17 against the quadrant 18.
Pivotally secured to the frame-member 12, by hangers 22, are a pair of levers 23 and 24, whose inner or adjacent ends are united by link 25. 'Ihe outer ends of levers 23 and 24 are provided with the studs or pins 26, which may be screwed into or otherwise secured to the levers 23 and 24. The pin-carrying or outer ends of levers 23 and 24 are arranged in the same horizontal plane, so that a cord or wire 27 which reaches from pin to pin across the face of carrier-member 14 and the drawing secured thereon, will extend in the same hcri zontal plane throughout its length.
In order that the wire or cord 27 may be held taut, in any adjusted position of the levers, I provide a spring tension device 2S.
One end of wire or cord 27 is secured -to 'the end of plunger 29, which is oontrolled'by` the coiled spring 30,-.see Fig. 5-, while a short wire or cord may be passed 'through the eye 3l, and also be secured to vthe .pin 26 at that end of lever 24, as can more clearly be seen in Fig. 3. y
To maintain the 'levers 23 andV 24 in their adjusted positions, andfal-so to permit 'of their easy operation, I extend the end 'of one 'of .the levers, forexample lever 24, so `'as' to form a handle, which is provided with la latch or spring-clamp 32, which engages with the slotted member 33, secured to fthe rame,vas clearly shown in F ig. il.
It is evident from vthe construction, that. when ythe -latch 32 is released from engage' ment with member 33, and lever`24c is swung about its pivotal point,rlever'23 will bemoved f in a similar manner by .reason of Athe flink connection 25' .between the levers, 'thereby' bringing the outer ends of both levers into the same adjusted fhorizontal plane. Vhen tho `ends vof 4the levers are=swung out ofthe horizontal plane occupied by their respective :pivotal points on hangers 22, it is evident that the distance between pins 26, '26, will be altered `or shortened; fthe cord or` wire 27 will however #be lkept taut l'lo'ythe action of spring 30 on the plunger '29 of the tension device 23.

A device of the class described comprising a carrying-member pivotally mounted so as to be adjusted in a vertical plane, a scale graduated in per cent. grade, a lever adapted to be affected by said member and arranged to indicate on the scale the vertical angular adjustment of said member, and means for maintaining a level line across the face of said member', whereby different levels in a horizontal plane on said member may be indicated.

A device of the class described, comprising a carrying-member pivotally mounted so as to permit of angular adjustment in a vertical plane, means arranged to be affected by said member to indicate the degree of angular vertical adjustment thereof, and a pair of vertically adjustable levers arranged to move in unison and hold a cord or wire in a level line across the face of said member.
8. A device of the class described comprising a carrying-ineinber pivotally mounted substantially at its center of gravity so as to permit of angular adjustment in a vertical plane, means arranged to be aimected by said member to indicate the degree of vertical angular adjustment of the member, a pair of vertically adjustable levers arranged to move in unison and hold a cord or wire in a level line across the face of said member, and means for maintaining the cord or Wire taut during the vertical movement of said levers.
9. A device of the class described, comprising a carrying-member mounted near its center of gravity so as to permitot angular adjustment in a. vertical plane, means arranged to be alfected by said member to indicate the degree of vertical angular adjustment, means arranged to maintain a vertically adjustable level line across the face of said member, and mechanism for holding said means in place.
