FRANK F. TURNER, LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA.
WATER-HEATER.
osaaee.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK F. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Morrison and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVater- I-Ieaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water heaters and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which will be most eflicient in supplying the maximum heat with a minimum amount of fuel.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a water heater which is provided with a pair of frusto-conical and hollow drums arranged one within the other and a still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device set up for operation. Fig. 2 is a similar view through the upper portion of the device taken on a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section of one of the drums used on the device; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same partly in section.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a casing having the fire box or combustion chamber 2 formed therein, said casing being provided with the doors 3 and t which admit respectively of en-- trance to said fire box and to the chamber below the fire box, the latter for the removal of the cinders and ashes, etc.
Mounted on the casing 1, to form a substantial extension therefor, is a drum-like member 5 which has extending transversely through the upper and lower portions thereof respectively the pipes 6 and 7,-the latter communicating with any desired source of supply and the former connected with any other desired mechanism (not shown). Also disposed within said drum-like extension 5, is a frusto-conical drum 8, which is hollow and has connection with the upper and lower- Specification of Letters Patent.

pipes 6 and 7 by-means of the connections 9 and 10 respectively. This frusto-conical drum is arranged vertically within the drum-like extension 5 and has projecting from the outer face thereof a plurality of short tubular members 11, which communicatewith the interior of said hollow drum and are closed at their outer ends. Extending through the drum 8, from the lower to the upper edges thereof, are the spiral fire V and air tubes 12, and as this drum is disposed immediately above the fire chamber,
the heated air and products of combustion are permitted to pass through these fire tubes, and heat the water which is contained in said drum. It will, of course, be understood that the tubular members 11 projecting from the drum also come in contact with the heated air and products of combustion to additionally heat the water in said drum. An additional frusto conical drum 13 is also provided, the same being of smallerdimensions than the aforesaid drum and arranged within the latter to be spaced from the inner walls of the same. This additional drum 13 also has connection with the upper and lower pipes 6 and 7, by means of the connections 14 and 15 respectively and additional tubes 16 are provided on this additional drum, which are similar to the aforesaid tubes 11 and are for the purpose of accomplishing the same result as the latter.
An outlet pipe 17 leads from the upper portion of the extension 5, whereby the smoke and other products of combustion may-be exhausted from the device and in order to prevent the greater portion of the heat within the device from also passing out therethrough, as the smoke is exhaust ed, a deflector 18 is provided. This deflector rests upon a support 19, at the upper portion of the extension 5, immediately below the outlet 17. As the smoke and products of combustion are directed upwardly, the same will be first deflected downwardly, prior to the exhausting of the smoke through the outlet and in this manner, only a minimum amount of heat is lost through the outlet.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the func tions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is 1. Ina water heater, the combination with a casing having a fire box, and a flue opening therein; of a pair of hollow frusto-coni- Cal drums disposed in the casing above the fire box, said drums being arranged one within the other, a plurality of spirally designed fire tubes formed within the hollow portion of the outer of said drums, and means to circulate water within said drums.
2. In a water heater, the combination with a casing having a fire box therein; of a pair of drums disposed in said casing above the fire box, said drums being arranged in spaced relation, one within the other, the outer of said drums being provided with a hollow wall and having spiral fire tubes formed therein, and means to circulate water through the inner drum and the hollow wall of the outer drum.
3. In a water heater, the combination with a casing having a fire box therein; of a pair of drums disposed in said casing above the fire boX, and arranged in spaced relation, one within the other, the inner of said drums having its ends closed and the outer of said drums being provided with a hollow wall, a plurality of tubular members mounted in the walls of said drums and having the outer ends thereof closed, the tubular members on said inner drum communicating with the interior thereof and the tubular members of the outer drum communicating with the space within the hollow wall thereof, fire tubes disposed in the hollow wall of said outer drum, and means to circulate water through the inner drum and the hollow wall of the outer drum.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK F. TURNER.
