- Specification of Letters Batent. Application filed pril 8, 1913. Seal No. 758,585.
Patented. ren, 1o, raie.
To aZZ 'whom t may concern: l
' the belt proper to be .Be it known that- I, Gus' MAJOR Keisnma citizen of the United States of America, 're' siding at New York, in the-county of. New- York and. State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in 'Belt-Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciiication. Y This invention -relates to beltlbuckles an particularly to, belt buckles whichdo not have a tongue or similar member requiring provided with holes or perforations. i a More specifically, my invention comprises a hollow casing, open at opposite sides for belt, anda pivoted cam member within said casing forL holding the'endof the 1belt in the desired adjusted position.- I prefer to pro vide the ivoted cam member .with a thumb whereby to permit manual movement of the cam member to bring 'the samein'contact ".vwith the belt proper, thevsecurin'g or final holding position fof the beltproperwith'in the casing being eifectedrautomatically by l the cam member.
.is tightened.
My 'nvention results in a 'belt-buckleof marked simplicityand strength', and at the same time secures advantages of comfortto the wearer by nice adjustment 'of thebelt; a'nd also avoiding the necessity olf-puncturing the belt proper, and otherwise improving the ornamental features. V i
Other objects .and features of my invention will be more fully understood from thevfollowing description, and the accompanyin drawings, in whichr Figure lis a perspective view `of a belt .buckle embodying my invention, with certain of the hidden parts indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 2- is a longitudinal' crossu .section of the same on a reduced scale, showing the positions of the parts. whenthe belt The hollow casin member l1 comprises the front face 2,.preierably. of convex form.` The opposite' ends 3 4 are open to allow the belt proper 5 to when it is desired' to adjust the sameabout the body of the wearer. At one end ofthe belt buckle, such as extending. from the openend 4 of casing'l, provided the binding means 6 for fastening one end 7 of the belt 5. I haveshown the fastening means 6 in the form fa cam having serrated teeth passed therethrough,
however,v any other form.' of binding means may be employed. v
The cam-.member 8 comprises opppsitely projectingend Apivotsf), 10 passing t rough recesses in the transverse sides of casing member il. From the pivots 9, 10, the cam Y' for binding. one end 'of the belt proper; n
member 8l comprises a portion-11 havlng the i shape of a general curve, and a further pormember through the' arc slots 2, past the cam member 8 until it pro- ]ects through opening 4. f By grasping such projecting portion with one hand and the piece or pieces 13 with the thumb'or other nger of. the other hand to move the cam member toward the .front face 2, the roughened portion'12will be broughtinicontact with the belt proper, and upon slight l'ong'i tudina'l movement-of the belti, the cam por- .tion 12 will bind the same against the inner eces' 13 from -thlportioxi vofithe belt propere has i wall of thefaoe 2. It will be noted that lin Asuch'fastened position', the ,engagement of the portion-12 of cam member 8 is affected.
by means of a relatively largerarea .with vthe y coaction of a like area of the inner face of the front wall 2l of casing l, this coaction being enhanced by the'clurved formation' of face 2. By reason of such cooperation be- .'tween thevvarious parts, I havev foundy that the cam member 8 may be formed of ageneral cross-section of' C'shape, that is, a hollow construction having a portion of its periphery, or aside, opened, thereby securing lightness in weight, less cost. in'manufa'cture, Without lessening the effectiveness of the buckle. I A.
-It will be observed that the point of juncy tureof the portion 12 with 'part 11 of cam member 8 is of less radial distancegfromeach. pivot, and that the radial distances of the remaining .portions or portion 12 increasegradually toward the free edge of portion l12. 'By -this construction, it will be seen, the material of the belt may be made of different thicknesses within certain limits, and for ang' secure when in fastened position by the coof such thicknesses the belt will be be desired.
Other changes and modification may be made in the specific form described Without depart-ing from my invention, as defined by tbe appended claim.
Having thus desciibed my invention, what declare :is nevi and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis z- A belt buckle comprising a hollow casing nieinber having :i back, a slotted side, and :L curved i'ront, i vtransversely disposed C shaped cani member composed of a. single sheet metall piece pivoted at the ends ol one edge to said body, and having the surface of its engaging portion adziptcefl to C pe1nte 21 with smid front, and im operating projection carried by one side of 'the engaging portion of smid sheet motel member end movable in said slotted .eide of said. body, said engaging portion oit said clamping .mein- 2, bei being ot pisogiessively increasing dis' tance from tbe Vpivot ivlici'eby to clamp vary ing thicknesses ot' materiel.
in testimony whereof L' alli); my signature` in presence of tivo iituessee. Y
