To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ANTONIO D1 D0- MENICA and ANTONINO AMICARELLI, subjects of Victor Immanuel III, King of Italy,
..proved drier, and refers more particularly to the type of drier used for drying macaron1.
It is the object of our invention, among other things, to construct the drier so as to provide several sections into which air at the atmospheric humidity may be caused to enter therein and circulate therethrough, means of accelerating the movement of the air within the drier by the action of one or more fans, to provide means whereby the humidity of the air within the drier may be controlled by one or more ports having an indirect connection with the outer air, and finally to so design the drier that it will be simple in its operation and of such few parts that they may-be economically constructed and readily assembled.
To these, and other ends, our invention consists in the drier, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described andmore particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is an elevation of our improved drier complete; Fig.
2 is a transverse sectional view thereof; Fig.
3 is a plan view; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan View, taken upon line A-B of Fig. 2.
In the practice of our invention, we provide a four sided body member 1, preferably made of matched sheathing, having a top 2 and suitable bracing timbers 33, to which the sheathing is secured.
In eachside of the body member is an opening 4: that extends srbstantially across one-half of the width thereof, and in front of which is a sliding door-5, which slides upon a track 6 and is suspended upon a rail 7 by one or more hangers 8.
Within the body member, and at a point slightly above the bottom thereof, are the floor bars 9, and connected therewith are a plurality of floor strips 10, which are arranged an equal distance apart, and between which are hinged the valve strips 11. These strips, when in their down or closed position, completely fill the open space between the strips 10, and form a smooth,
The valve strips 11 are moved from their open to their closed position through a bar 12 that is operated and supported at one end by a lever 13, and at the other end by a otally secured at-their lower ends to the blocks15. Between each of the valve strips 11 andthe bar 12, is a link 16 that forms a positive connection therebetween. As the lever 13 is rocked-upon its pivot-mounting, the bar 12 has a movement in the direction of its length, and also a slightly vertical movement, which latter movement is imparted-to the Valve strips '11 through the links 16, causing the valve strips to move 10, and open and close the spaces therebetween. The'air that passes from the drier chamber through the said open spaces collects in the chamber 17 beneath the bars 9, and "escapes therefrom, when desired, through one or more openings in the side thereof, said, openings being covered by verof the body member. Each side .of the body member is provided with one of these slides, they being preferably arranged beneath the openings 4, so that no two of these openings are in a direct line with the other. slides; and their method of operation, are common and well known, we have not there- ,fore described them herein in detail.
Within the interior of the drier are a plurality of supporting racks, arranged one above the other, and constructed with 'a' horizontal bar 20 and a brace 19 to support the inner end thereof. Within the interior of the drier, adjacent to each side thereof,
bars 20, are the supporting bars 21. As shown in the drawings, the racks above referred to are four in number, onebeing provided for each of the separate sections unbroken floor for the drying chambers.
As these and. upon the same line as the horizontal link l t, the lever 13 and link 14 being pivupon their hinged connection, with the strips tically' movable slides18 upon the outside within the drier, and at the'inner end they I support a tube 22 by means of .thelcollars J side of the body member through an open- 23 that surround and are secured to said tube and projecting over the inner end .of

To load the drier, the valve strips 11 are moved totheir down position, so that the top thereof is flush with the top of the strips 10, the door 5 is moved so as to uncover the opening 4 through the body member, and the macaroni, in a moist condition, suspended in strips over a rod 24, is carried into the drier, and the rod placed so that one end is supported by the horizontal bar 20, and the other end by the bar 21. A plurality of said rods, when in their relative positions in the drier, being shown by broken lines in Fig. 4. Two layers of macaroni are placed ineach section of the drier, one above the other, after which the door 5 is returned to its closed position.
Air is drawn into the drier from the outing 25in the top 2, and caused to circulate within the drier through the action of one or more fans 26, which are fixed to a shaft 27 that passes through the opening 25, tube 22, being supported at its lower end in a V driven downwardly through the damp maca- The shaft 27 is rotated in any convenient manner, the means herein shown being. a shaft 28 that is supported in journals 29 upon the top 2, and driven by a belt 30,a pulley 31 upon said shaft and. a pulley 32 upon the shaft 27, said pulleys being connected by a belt 33.
If it is desired to admit more air into the drier than will pass through the opening 25, means are provided for this purpose, said means comprising an opening 36, through the top 2, at a point directly over each. one of the four sections in the drier that is surrounded by .a flange 37, to which is hinged a valve 38 and connecting said valves, in airs, are the cords 39, which are connected y a cord 40. As the cord 40 is pulled, the valves 38 are lifted oft their seat, so as to admit air therethrough and through the opening 36. The conection between the cords 39 and 40 is such that all the valves are open an equal distance at one and the same time. The details of our invention may be materially modified, and we do not therefore limit ourselves to the exact construction member; of a plurality of supporting racks 1 arranged so as to divide said body member into sections; a central core or tube between the inner ends of said racks; and fans mounted within said body member, one being above and the other below said ra'cks.

In a drier, the combination with a body member, having an opening therethrough upon each side thereof; a closure door upon each side of said body member and movably connected therewith; a plurality of supporting racks within said body member, arranged so as to divide the same into sections; fans within said body member; a floor within said body member below said racks and composed of fixed strips and movable valve strips; and means, as a shiftable bar having a link connection with each of said valve strips for actuating said valvestr ips.
