Specification of Letters Patent.

To all @07mm it may concern Be it known that lf, MARKAR MARGBANIAN, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in padlocks, and the object of my improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and eiiiciency in use.
In the accompanying drawing :`Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved padlock, the position of the parts when open being shown by broken lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a similar view in part broken out of the left member on the same scale as Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the right member in the reverse position from that shown in F 4. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the main spring. F ig. S is a similar view of the auxiliary spring. F ig. 9 is a side elevation of the operating` member. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of the key.
My improved padlock comprises a left member 10 and a right member 11 which are semi-circular in form and which are pivotally connected together at their upper ends by a pivot pin 12 and separably connected by their lower ends by a lock 13 and keeper 14, operated by a key 15. The upper end 1G of the left member 10 is forked and the upper end of the right member 11 is provided with a tongue 17 fitting therein, and the said ends have holes 18 in alinement that are a fit for the pivotl pin 12. The rear member of the fork 16 is provided on the inner face with a recess 19 extending around the hole 1S and having a shoulder 2O on the upper edge and the outer face of the tongue 17 has a corresponding recess 21 having a shoulder 22. The auxiliary spring 23 is housed in the recesses 19 and 21, has free arms 24 at the ends that engage with the shoulders 20 and 22 and intermediate the said arms 23 has a coil 25 by which it is mounted on the pivot pin 12. The auxiliary spring 23 tends to open the members 10 and 11 and does so when the lock mechanism is disengaged or unlocked. The lower ends of the members 10 and 11 have radial faces 26 in abutment in the closed position.
The keeper 14 is vrigidly secured in the 1 described lower end 30 of the right member 11 and projects outwardly from the face 26 suitably to engage with the spring latch to be and is provided with a nose 27 suitable for engaging therewith. The said keeper 14 has a shank 28 that is positioned in a hole 29 extending through the material of the said lower end 30, the outer end of the said shank 29 being exposed and headed over. The lower end 31 of the left member 10 is chambered as shown at 32 to provide a housing for the main spring 33 and has a hole 34 extending through the front and rear walls of the said chamber in which is positioned the operating member 35 adjacent t-he body portion of the main spring 33, and at the inner portion of the chamber 32 there is another hole 36 for a pin 37 that secures the main spring 33 in place in the chamber 32. The main spring 33 is made of flat spring material in loop form., the apex 38 thereof being engaged with the pin 37, the lower arm 39 being straight and engaged with the lower wall of the chamber 32 and the upper arm 40 having a straight body portion that is positioned below the operating member 35 suitably to engage therewith and having at the inner end an upturned nose 41 suitable for engaging with the keeper 14. The operating member 35 is generally cylindrical and a fit for the hole 34, has at the front end a slot 42 for the bit end 43 of the key 15 and at the middle portion has a longitudinal slot 44 of suflicient length to receive the upper arm 40 of the main spring 33. Normally the arm 40 of the main spring 33 rests on the bottom wall 45 of the slot 44 and is positioned between the shoulders 46 at the ends thereof. The slot 44 is of sufcient depth to permit the nose 41 to engage with the keeper 14, whereby the lock mechanism is normally in locked position and will assume such position as a spring lock when the parts are brought from the open to the closed position. The shoulders 46 serve at the same time to hold the operating member 35 in position in the hole 34.
en the operating member 35 is turned by the key 15 the cylindrical portion of the body thereof engages with the arm 40 and depresses the same so that the nose 41 disengages from the nose 27 of the keeper 14 and permits the auxiliary spring 23 to open the members 10 and 11.
I claim as my invention n 1. In a padlock comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, one of the ends of one of the said members having an eX- posed face in a radial plane, a cavity extending inwardly from the said face, and holes in alinement in the two side Walls of the said cavity, a springhoused in the said eavity, and an operating member having a slot along the middle portion, the end portions of the said operating member tting and filling the said holes, and the Walls of the said slot being engaged With the said spring.
2. A padlock comprising as part of the locking means a spring member housed in a cavity and having an elongated arm, and an operating member, the said operating member being cylindrical in form along` the body portion and having the said body portion rotatively mounted in the Walls of the said cavity, and the said operating member be-l ing positioned across the said arm and haw ing a slot in registration therewith.
