INKING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Application filed September 29, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hneo N. ELLEN- BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of She boygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Devices for Printing- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to inking devices for platen printing presses having a set of inking rollers which are mounted on an oscillating carrier by which they are carried back and forth between the inking disk and the form.
It is the object of the invention to provide the inking rollers with a distributing attachment whereby the ink is spread over the rollers and kept in motion on the surface thereof, and furthermore to provide an attachment of this kind which can be readily applied to any standard platen press without any modification or alteration in the structure thereof. These objects are attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing the application of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly broken away.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment of the frame of an ordinary platen printing press, at the top of which is mounted the inking disk 6.
The form is indicated at 7 The inking rollers 8 are carried by an oscillating carrier 9 by which they are moved back and forth between the inking disk and the form. A fragment only of the carrier is shown. These parts are arranged and they operate in a well known manner, in view of which a further description thereof is deemed'unnecessary.
In order that the ink may be evenly deposited on the form, there is provided a distributing attachment which is the subject matter of the present application for patent. This attachment comprises a pair of rollers, indicated at 10 and 11, respectively, which rollers extend parallel to the inking rollers 8 and are arranged so that each is in contact with two of the latter at the back.

the roller 10. The hubs 17 are reduced on one side, as indicated at 19, and on said'reduced portions of the hubs are pivotally mounted links 20. To the outer ends of the links 20 are pivoted, as indicated at 21, arms 22 having hubs 23 at their outer ends for supporting the shaft 24 of the roller 11. On
the ends of the shaft 18 of the roller 10 are mounted hooks 25 to which are connected one end of coiled springs 26, the other ends of which springs are connected to the carrier 9 by means of hooks 27. To the top of the hub portions 18 are fastened fiat springs 28 which bear at their free ends on the hubs 23 of the arms 22, thus directly locating and applying pressure to the roller 11.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the supports of the rollers 10 and 11 are pivoted, and by means of the springs 26 and 28 they are held yieldingly in peripheral contact with the rollers 8 and are also allowed to follow the inward and outward movement of the latter. The pivotal connections at 15 and 21 allow the rollers 10 and 11 to freely accommodate themselves to the relative different positions the rollers 8 assume in passing over the angle at the top of the frame 5 to and from the form 7.
The distributer is simple, practical and efficient, it can readily be applied to the press, and it eliminates all distribution troubles. The rollers 10 and 11 distribute the ink evenly over the rollers 8, as they are in constant peripheral contact with the latter. The ink is freely and continually transmitted from one roller to the other with the result that it is evenly applied to the form 7.
I claim:
1. The combination with the inking rollers of a printing press and the carrier thereof; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, pivotally connected supporting members for the distributing rollers, said members being free to allow the distributing rollers to accommodate themselves to relative different positions of the inking rollers, and means for yieldingly holding the distributing rollers in peripheral contact with the inking rollers.
2. The combination with the inking rollers of a printing press and the carrier thereor; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, a pivoted member on the carrier, a support for one of the distributing rollers pivotally connected to said member,
a pivoted member carried by said support,-
a support for the other distributing roller pivotally connected to the second-mentioned pivoted member, and means for yieldingly holding the distributing rollers in periph eral contact with the inking rollers.
3. The combination with the inking rollers of a printing press and the carrier thereof; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, pivoted arms on the carrier, arms pivoted to the outer ends of said arms and supporting one of the distributing rollers, a pivoted support for the other distributing roller carried by the second-mentioned arms, springs engageable with said support, and springs connected to the second-mentioned arms.
4:. The combination with the inking rollers of a printin press and the carrier thereof; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, pivoted arms on the carrier, arms pivoted to the outer ends of said arms and sup iorting one of the distributing rollers, links pivoted to the second-mentioned arm, pivoted supports for the other distributing roller carried by the links, springs engageable with said support, and springs connected to the secondqnentioned arms.
5. The combination with the inking rollers of a printing press; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, a pivoted sup port for one of the distributing rollers, said support being in pivotally connected seotions, a pivoted support for the other distributing roller carried by one of the aforesaid sections, the last-mentioned support being also in pivotally connected sections, and springs yieldingly holding the rollers in peripheral contact with the inking rollers.
6. The combination with the inking rollers of a printing press; of distributing rollers between the inking rollers, a pivoted support for one of the distributing rollers, said support being in pivotally connected sections, it pivoted support for the other distributing roller carried by one of the aforesaid sections, and tension springs connected to said sections, the last-mentioned support being also in pivotally connected sections, and the section which carries the last1nentioned roller being spring-pressed.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
