ALEXANDER J. HOOD, OF MUSOODA, WISCONSIN.
PRINTING-PRESS ATTACI-HWENT.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Jan. 21, 1908.
Application filed May 9. 1907- Serial No. 372.666-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. Hoop, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscoda, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Printing-Press Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements'in attachments for platen printing presses, and more particularly to one by means of which bronzing, tinting, numbering, and the like, may be done while the printed sheet is upon the platen.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective attachment of this character, by means of which a rubber stamp or form, a numbering machine, a
' bronzing or tinting pad or any similar device may be swung down upon the printed sheet upon the platen after the usual impression has been made upon the sheet, and while the inking rollers are moving down over the usual type form to re-ink the same.
Another object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render the same more perfect and efficient.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a job printing press with my improved attachment applied thereto, the parts being shown in two positions in full and dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring-supported arm and its attached parts,
. removed from the press; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the swin ing member which carries the form holder; Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sectional view through the two adjustable sections of the spring-supported arm; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bracket which supports the trip roller, the inking roller, and the bronzing or tinting powder; Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view through the bronzing or tinting box; Fig. 8 is-a perspective view of the trip arm which is secured to the throw-off lever of the press; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the tinting pad; Fig. 10 is a side view of the tinting mechanism, the tinting-box bein shown in section; and Fig. 11 is a sectiona View of the printing pad.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a job printing press of the well known Gordon type, which comprises a stationary frame 2, a bed 3 uponwhich the usual form is clamped, a laten' '4, an inking disk or plate 5, and inking rollers 6, which are mounted in the usual oscillating frame 7.
My improved auxiliary printing, tinting or numbering attachment comprises a spring .9 of substantially U-form, which has one of its ends 10 bent, as at 11, and is clamped to one edge of the swinging roller carrying frame 7, by twoor more clips 12, or in any other suitable manner. The other arm 13 of the spring 9 has boltedor otherwise secured upon it, as at 14, an angular arm 15, whichis preferably provided upon its free end with an adjustable extensible member or section 16. The extensible section 16 of this arm is slidably and adjustably secured to the section 15.
by'forming in the outer end of the latter a slot 17, which is adapted to receive an inte gral lug or stud 18 formed upon one face of the section 16, which has upon its outer threaded end a washer and a winged clamping nut, by means of which the section 16 may be clam ed against movement. The section 16 is a so provided with a perforated lug or extension 8, through which a shouldered thumb nut 8 projects, and engages with a screw-threaded lug 19, which is adjustably clamped to the arm 15 by a nut 20. The arm 15 is made adjustable to permit the rubber form, numbering machine, tinting pad or similar device, which is mounted upon its free end, as hereinafter explained, to be adjusted so that it will strike the desired point or place upon the platen or the sheet of paper thereon, and the impress of such form, pad, or similar device, may be regulated by means of a set-screw 21, which is provided in the threaded opening in the lower portion of the arm 15, and has its end impinging against the bent portion 11 of the spring 9.
The rubber form', numbering machine, tinting pad or similar device 23, which the attachment is to operate is secured in a suitable holder 24, which is adjustably clamped upon a swinging frame or element 25, mounted upon the outer end of the extensible section 16 of'the arm 15. This swinging frame or element 25 is here shown in the form of a casting consisting of an open body 26 having at one end a cam-shaped trip arm or lever 27, and at its opposite end a slotted arm 28, which is adapted to extend transversely with respect to the printing press. In the body portion 26 of the frame or member 25 is a pivot 29, which is mounted in a suitable bearing 30 provided upon the outer end of the extensible member 16 of the arm 15. This frame or member 25 is adapted to be held normally in engagement with a stop screw 31, provided in a threaded lug 32 upon the arm section 16 bymeans of a coil spring 33,
which has one of its ends connected to the frame 25, and its other end to a bracket or extension 34 upon the lower portion of the section 16 of the army 15. By adjusting the stop screw 31, the form, machine, pad, or other device 23, may be adjusted so as to strike flat upon the platen when the press is in operation; The holder 24, shownin Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, comprises a body 35 having an overhanging lip 36 at one end to engage one end of the block or pad of the form 23, which is clamped upon one face of the body 35 by an adjustable plate 37, which is secured by means of a bolt 38, passed through a slot 39 in the end of the body 35, and having a winged nut 40 upon its threaded end. The body 35 of the holder has projecting from its opposite side a rod or stem 41, which is adjustably connected with the arm'28 by means of a slotted bar 41 and two nuts 42 and 42. The rear end of the bar 41 is perforated, through which passes a thumb nut 43, which engages with a lug 43 that is,
adjustably secured to the arm 28 by a clamping bolt 43.
Instead of employing the holder 24, any suitable clamping device may be used for holding a numbering machine, or when the bronzing or tinting pad 44, shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings is employed, its spring arm 45 can be adjustably connected with the arm'28 by means of the bar 41, as will be readily understood. By mounting the arm 15 in this manner'upon the swinging roller carrying frame 7 of the press, it will be seen that as the said frame is oscillated to move the rollers alternately across the usual form upon the bed 3 and the inking disk 5, the device 23 will be alternately moved into engagement with the platen or the printed sheet thereon,
and under the inking pad or roller 46, which is supported at the rear of the press.
The inking device 46, which is in the form of a soft or flexible pad of absorbent material, is mounted upon a spring frame 47, whichis adjustably secured by means of a clamping screw 48 in the slotte-douter end ofabracketarm 49, which is adjustably secured upon a bracket frame 50, bolted or otherwise attached to the stationary portion 2 of the frame in the rear of the inkingdisk 5. Upon this frame 50 is also adjustably mounted, asat 51, an arm 52, which has adjustably mounted in its slotted outer end a trip roller 53,which is disposed in the path of the cam-shaped trip arm 27, provided upon the frame 25, so that when the arm 15 is swung rearwardly, said trip arm 27 will pass under the roller 53 to cause the frame 25 to be swung upon its pivot 29 to bring the form or device 23 under and into contact with the inking device 46. When the arm 15 is swung forward and the trip arm 27 leaves the roller 53, the spring 33 will return the swinging frame 25 to its normal position, in engagement with the stop screw 31.
When it is desired to use the attachment for bronzing or tinting matter that has been printed upon the paper or sheet upon the platen 4, the pad 44 is adjustably secured upon the arm 28 of the frame 25, so that when the arm 15 is swung rearwardly, said pad willbe moved into the open end of the box or receptacle 55, which contains the bronzing or tinting powder. This receptacle, as shown, is supported from the frame 50 and is rectangular in form. Its interior is lined with fur, or other suitable material 56, which is adapted to hold in suspension the bronzing or t1nting powder, and at a suitable pointin its upper portion is provided a hopper57,
which has in its bottom adjustable slides 53. The latter have their opposing edges covered with fur, or other suitable material, so that the path of a lug or projection 61, formed.
upon one side of the swinging frame 25. This trip arm 60 is here sh own in the form of a metal rod bent and secured to the lever 59 by a clamp 62.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
