Specification of Letters gatent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON lVoLLI'rzEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxes which are collapsible into fiat form.
The box is designed more particularly for holding a hat.
The object of the invention is to provide a structure which enables the box to be folded or collapsed to save space in shipment or storage, and to this end it consists in a novel and improved connection between the bottom and the side walls of the box, which permits separation of said parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box set up ready for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the side walls of the box in collapsed form. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective, par tially broken away, showing a fastener.
Referring specifically to the drawing the side walls of the box are composed of two matching strips 5 of paste-board which are joined at their ends by cloth strips 6, the same forming hinges or flexible connections which enable the sections to be folded fiat, one on the other. To the sections are secured binding tapes 7 usually found on hat boxes.
The bottom 8 of the box is placed inside the side wall sections 5 by spreading out the same, and as the bottom is circular, the side wall assumes a cylindrical form whenthe bottom is inserted. The box bottom is removably secured to the side wall of the box by a series of fasteners, which latter will now be described. Each fastener comprises an L-shaped plate 9 of thin flexible sheet metal. The portion of the plate at the angle is permanently fastened to the side wall of the box on the inside thereof, by means of a staple or other suitable fastener 10,,and the two wings 11 and 12 of the plate are adapted to be bent out from the attached portion thereof to extend at a right angle thereto, the wing 11 being at the top and the wing 12 at one side of said attached portion of the plate. The adjacent edges of the wings are slightly spaced when they are thus bent. The fastener being in place on the side wall of the box, the bottom 8 is secured in place by bending the wing 11 over the edge of the bottom to lie flat on the top thereof, and the wing 12 is bent to extend edgewise in engagement with the under side of the bottom. The bottom is therefore located between the two wings, the Wing 11 preventing upward displacement, and the wing 12 downward displacement. The bottom. 8 is now securely held in place, and upon bending the wings 11 and 12 back, it may be removed, after which the side wall can be collapsed into flat form. The cover of the box may be of the ordinary type.
I claim:
1. A box having a collapsible side wall, a bottom inside said wall, said bottom being removable, and fasteners for the bottom, each of said fasteners comprising a plate which is secured to the side wall inside the box, and has projecting flexible wings, one of said wings being bendable over the edge of the bottom to engage the top thereof, and the other wing being bendable to engage the under side of the bottom.
2. A box having a collapsible side wall composed of matching strips flexibly connected at their ends to permit folding into flat form, a bottom inside said wall, said bottom being removable, and fasteners for the bottom, each of said fasteners comprising a plate which is secured to the side wall inside the box, and has projecting flexible win gs, one of said wings being bendable over the edge of the bottom to engage the top thereof, and the other wing being bendable to engage the under side of the bottom.
3. A box having a collapsible side wall, a bottom inside said wall, said bottom being removable, and fasteners for the bottom, each of said fasteners comprising a plate which is secured to the side wall inside the box, and has projecting flexible wings, one of said wings being bendable over the edge 'of the bottom to lie flat on the top thereof,
and the other wing being bendable to engage the under side of the bottom edgewise.
