MULTIPLE EMBOSSING DIE.) APPLIOATION FILED 00T.18, 1911.

UMTED STATES PATENT @Fhlfifl EDWARD D. SHERLOCK AND GEORGE W. VAN NORTWIGK, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
MULTIPLE EMBOSSING-DIE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWARD D. SHER- LOCK and GEORGE W. VAN NoRrwIoK, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Embossing-Dies, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in multiple embossing dies, and its object resides in the provision of a the-holder which is constructed to so secure the members of a multiple die, that their upper edges, lying in a common horizontal plane, are maintained in spaced re lation to each other whereby to eliminate inaccessible in -retaining localities.
In the application for patent, Serial No. 433,832, filed May 20, 1908, a construction is shown and described in which means interposed between the members of the die, are employed to maintain'their upper edges in spaced relation to each other, and the present invention differs from that described in the aforesaid application in that no spacing means, either separate from or integral with the die members are used, the die holder having means whereby the die-members after having been properly arranged upon a surface thereof, are maintained in their relative positions.
To facilitate the arrangement of the die members, the holders are preferably provided with means whereby the relative positions of the die members may be readily determined.
The purpose of spacing the upper edges of the members of the multiple embossing die is to eliminate ink-retaining localities between them which in the ordinary operation of wiping the engraved surface of the die would be filled or remain filled with the ink previously applied to said surface, the same as the incised characters or designs, with the result that when the die is pressed upon the paper to be embossed, the lines along which the die members are separated will be plainly marked thereon, thus spoiling the effect it is desired to produce.
In die holders at present in use, the means for securing the members of a multiple die consist ordinarily of a screw or similar device whereby the members are clamped one against the other and collectively against a projecting flange on the holder.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 18, 1911.
Patented Feb. 3,1914%. Serial No. 655,318.
In the present invention the means for holding the die-members are constructed to secure them in a separated relation upon the holder and while no doubt this result may be accomplished by other similar means, we preferably employ one or the other of the two constructions shown in the accompanymg drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which,
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a die holder with the members of the multiple die secured thereon in an operative position, and Fig. 2, a section taken along the line 22, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 2 designates the die holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which as usual, is provided with a dove-tailed tenon 3 by means of which it may be secured to the plunger of an embossing press.
Inwardly projecting flanges 4: are adjustably secured along opposite edges of the flat surface 5 of the holder upon which, in practice, the die is placed by means of screws 6 which project through bores in the flanges, into therewith registering threaded apertures in the holder, and whose heads are normally disposed in countersinks of the said bores.
The members 7 of the multiple die are provided along their lower side edges with outwardly projecting ledges 8 which are adapted to enter the recesses produced by the adjustable flanges 4 on the holder. I
After the die members have been arranged in spaced relation to each other, as is shown in the drawings, they are secured in place by drawing the flanges 4 by means of the screws 6 against the respective ledges 8 dis posed between them and the flat surface of the die holder.
To facilitate placing of the die members at the proper distances from each other, the flanges 4 may be provided along their inner edges with corresponding graduated scales 9 as is shown in F 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Lettersatent is 1. A multiple die for use in embossing including a holder having a flat surface on one side and having means on its opposite side for attachment to the plunger of an embossing press, intaglio die members disposed upon the flat surface of said holder,
said die members being; arranged so that there is a space between each of the adjacent die members to eliminate inaccessible ink retaining localities between the adj acent sides of adjacent die members, and devices for adjustably securing each end of each die member to the holder, each of said devices having a graduated scale arranged adjacent the respective ends of said die members which scales are in register with each other to enable proper spacing of the die members.
2. A multiple die for use in embossing including a holder having a flat surface on one side and having means on its opposite side for attachment to the plunger of an embossing press, intaglio die members loosely disposed upon the flat surface of said holder so Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the as to be shiftable on said surface toward each other to any desired extent and arranged so that there is a space between each of the adjacent die members to eliminate inaccessible in r-retaining" localities between the adjacent sides of adjacent die members, and mechanical means for adjustably and immovably securing said die members on said holder by engagement with the ends of the said members.
In testimony whereof we have afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
