T0 all whom 'it may concern Be it known that we, JACKSON BLIZARD and VILLIAM U. COLTHAR, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, and Springfield, county of Clark, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Squares, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to printing artsand particularly to a hand tool or square for alining separated bodies of type, cuts or printing plates.
In order that the several pages of a signature or folio may register when properly folded, it is necessary when making up the form for such signature, that the several bodies of type corresponding to the different pages be accurately alined and spaced in their relation one with the other.
It has heretofore been the custom of printers when making an imposition of a several page signature o-r booklet, to bring the different page forms into alinement, by making numerous measurements and by sighting along the edges of the several bodies of type bringing such type bodies into alinement by the eye.
The object of the present invention is to provide a square which will be simple in construction and economical in manufacture, which when placed in the gutter between the adjacent bodies of type will stand substantially on aV level with the type faces enabling the page forms to be brought accurately into alinement by alining them with the straight edge of the blade of such square.
A further object is to provide in such a hand tool a graduated measuring device in which the graduations will extend in radial directions from a given point enabling the operator to more readily compute the sizes of the bodies of type and their distances one from the other.
With the above primary and other incidental objects in view as will more fully appear in the specification the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof, and the mode of operation, or their equivalents, as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the imposition and twelve page signature, showing the application of the hand tool, forming the subject matter hereof, to the page forms for alining them one with the other. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the alining square. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device. Fig. i is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the blade of the square.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of\reference throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, l is the imposing stone upon which rests the chase 2 in which are arranged the several bodies of type 3 corresponding to the pages of the signature. These bodies 8 of type are separated one from the other by the furniture li, which being of less height than the type, forms parallel grooves or gutters between successive bodies of type. To insure proper registry of the several pages of the signature when folded, it is necessary before locking the form by means of the quoins 5 to bring the different page forms into alinement one with the other. To do this the square or hand tool forming the subject matter hereof, is applied to the form in the manner shown in Fig. 1. This square comprises a transverse head portion 7 having an upturned flange 8 which affords a bearing surface to engage the body of type. The head portion 7 is of such width as to readily enter the gutter formed between the bodies of type by the intervening furniture. The upturned flange 8 of the head is preferably of such height that when the instrument is resting on the furniture, the top edge of said flange will extend substantially level with the face of the type. lifting the instrument from the form without disturbing the adjusted bodies of type. In order that the elongated blade 9 may occupy a position substantially level throughout, it is provided on its under surface with a pendant rib 11 which when the instrument is in use rests upon the furniture Within the gutter and supports the top surface of the blade in a position substantially level with the faces of the type. To assist in properly locating the several bodies of type the head and also the blade are graduated in units of type measurement, preferably in picas and nonpareils. There are three series of these graduations, two series being carried upon the head and extending in opposite directions from the juncture point of the head and blade and the third series being carried upon the blade itself and extending from said juncture point of the blade and head. The graduations of the head are preferably, though not necessarily, carried upon the upturned edge of the flange 8. In order to provide a positive connection between the head and the blade, the head 7 is extended rearward as at 12 to afford a longer bearing surface for the attachment of the blade 9. As shown in Fig. 4, the under edge of the bead or ribl 11 extends flush with the under side of the head 7, while the top or graduated surface of the blade 9 extends flush with the top edge of the upturned flange 8. j From the abovedescription it will be apparent that there is thus produced a device of the character described possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportion, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been herein described in language more or less specific `as to certain structural features, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to any specific details, but that the construction herein shown and described comprises but one mode of putting the invention into effect and the invention is therefor claimed broadly in any of its possible forms or modifications Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
l. In a printers hand tool for alining bodies of type, a square comprising a head,
a blade extending at right angles to the head, and a pendant support projecting from the under side of the blade adapted to maintain the blade in a level position in relation to the faces of the type, substantially as specified.
2. In a printers hand tool for alining bodies of type, a square comprising a head, a blade extending at right angles to the head and a longitudinally disposed pendant rib on the iunder side of said blade forming a bearing therefor adapted to maintain the blade in level relation with the type, substantially as specified.
3. In a printers hand too-l for alining bodies of type, a square comprising a head, a blade extending at right angles to the head, said head having t-wo series of graduations thereon extending in opposite directions from the juncture of the head and blade, and the blade having thereon a series of graduations extending from the juncture of 'the blade and head, substantially as specified.
4. In a printers hand tool .for alining bodies of type, a square comprising a head, a marginal flange on said head projecting perpendicular to the plane of the main portion thereof and forming a bearing to engage the body of type, a blade projecting perpendicular to the said marginal flange, the bearing surface of the blade projecting flush With the under surface of the head, substantially as specified.
5. In a printers tool for alining bodies of type, a square comprising a head, a marginal flange on said head projecting perpendicular to the plane of the main portion thereof and forming a bearing to engage the body of type, a blade projecting perpendicular to the said marginal fiange, the top surface of the blade being flush with the upturned edge of the marginal flange, a longitudinally disposed rib on the under side of the blade projecting flush with the under side of the head, said head and blade being provided with series of graduations extending in different directions fromv the juncture of the blade and head, substantially as specified.
