T0 all who/m, 'it may concern Be it known that l, CONRAD Soi-ITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Portable Water- Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas heaters and is designed to obviate the escape vof gas and danger resulting from the use of pilot tubes and similar contrivances in portable heaters by improving the ignition mechanism.
It is also an object to provide a simple, efficient, convenient and durable construction.
Heretofore in devices of this character, it has been usual to use torch or pilot tube to eHec-t the ignition of gas supplied', independently of the ignition device, to the burner within the casing. Explosions have been caused frequently by accumulation of gas in the heater due to prematurely turning on the supply to the burner or the failure of the ignition deiice` to work properly.
My invention contemplates the use of a single removable tube to supply gas to the burner and to effect ignition o-f the jets, gas flowing from the tube being' lighted exterior-ly of the heater casing. The tube is adapted to be inserted in a socket communicating through a passage with the burner, and an orifice in such connecting passage or fuel supply tube provides for the maintenance f a jet of burning gas after the seating of the tube in the socket, the balance of the unconsumed gas flowing to the burner, and the gas jets from the burner being ignited by the maintained flame.
Further characteristics of the construction embodying my invention will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a heater embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of details representing a modified con struction.
The heater comprises a casing having the base 1, supported by the feet 2, and containing an air supply passage 3 communicating with the fresh air fiue t extending above the level of the liquid in which the heater is to be immersed and discharging through the circular passage 3. A body 5 is fixed on the base within the fianges 1 to form the combustion chamber 5', and contains a sight aperture 6 closed by a sheet of mica or other suitable material. Open ended tubes 7 for the circulation of water pass through the walls of the body and have their ends upset against the exterior surface thereof so as to provide water tight joints. A chimney extending to the height of the flue A is provided by the pipe 8 screwed into the aper ture 9 in the. top of the casing, and a passage for the insertion of the fuel supply tube is provided by the pipe 10 screwed into the casing opening 11 and extending to the height of the part 8.
A burner 12, supported by the base 1, above and concentrically to the aperture 3, has a flange 12 on which is supported the spreading plate 13 containing jet openings 13. A passage 14 extending through the burners neck 15 contains a socket 16 and adjacent thereto lateral orifices 17. A gas supply tube 18, having an end 1S fitting the socket 16 and guiding rings 19 adapted to loosely contact with the pipe 10, communicates with the Bunsen mixer 20, to which gas is supplied through a coupling 21 under control of the cock 22.
It-will be understood that, when the apparatus isin operation, gas and air mixed in the chamber 2O are supplied to the burner 12 through the conduit comprising the separable sections 18 and 15; that, in lighting the apparatus, the conduit section 1S is withdrawn from the casing and the gas and air mixture supplied thereto ignited at the end thereof; and that, when the section 1S is seated in the socket 16, the jets issuing through the apertures 17 remain ignited while the combustion of the main flow of fuel is smothered in the passage 14e. rPhe main fiow of fuel then passes through the chamber 1A and holes 13 and is ignite-d from the jets issuing from the apertures 17.
As shown in Fig. 3, the aperture 18 for the burner igniting jet is provided in the removable section 1S of the fuel supply conduit. The operation with this construction is substantially the same as with the construction of Fig. 2, the combustion of the main flow from the tube 1S being smothered in the passage 1A and the jets issuing from the burner orifices being ignited from the jet issuing from the aperture 18".
