ib all idiom it may concern Be it known 'that l, @mais A. Heerenveen, a citizen or the United States oi America, and a resident oia the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Folding Beds, oit which the 1followingq is a specication. 4
My invention relates to beds capable of being folded and, il? desired, converted into another form or piece oi furniture, and has i'or one oi" its objects the provision of a construction of this character which is simple, capable of being easily set up or folded, and which, when in its last named position, afords ample space for the bedding.
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, my invention resides in t e features ci construction, arran ements and combinations oi parts hereinatter described and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate vation illustrating my invention in open osition. Fig. 2 is a .fragmentary top p an thereof with portions broken awa Fig. 3
ia an elevation illustrating the be folded, a portion of the main sup, orting frame or box being broken away, an` Fig.' 4 is a vertical cross section through one side portion of the bed, taken on line fl-t otv Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals ot reference, 1 and 2 indicate end sections, and 3 an intermediate section, the latter being hin ed, as by pivots 20, to sections 1 and 2 and orming in conjunction therewith the bed frame across which the usual spring bottoni, as 30, extends. Sections 1 and 3 are pivotally mounted on swing'ng supports, conveniently Aconsisting of pairs of bar members t and 5, which are pivoted at 4', 5 respectively, to the opposite end portions of a main supportin. frame 6, the pivots 1l be'- ing below the pivots 5', as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and Ll. Support members i and 5, the former of which have their outer end portions odset both inwardly and rearwardly relatively to frame 6, are pivoted at da, 5"x to bed frame sections 1, 3 respectively,

' from main frame 6 in divero'ing reation.
Reference numeral 7 indicates connecting links for the support members l, 5 the same being pivoted at 7 on widened portions thereof, whereby each pivotal point 7 will be similarly odset with respect to an imaginary line intersecting the adyacent pivots 5', 5a. Support members 5 are provided with rigid extensions 5", which, with the bed openLpr-oject forwardly of and above pivots 5".' Pivotally connected, as at 8, with en tension 5b are links 8, the same having their other end portion provided with slots 8 which freely receive studs 9 of bed frame section 2. Studs 9 engage the outer end walls ot' slots 8 when the bed is open to thereby prevent rearward tipping of the bed frame 'except when section 2 is swung upwardly.
Reference numerals 1() indicate legs pivoted at 1l and 12 to frame section 2 and adjusting bars 13 respectively, which latter are pivoted at 13 to bed frame section 3, whereby relative movement of one of the sections 2,3 with respect to the other will e'ect opening and folding movements of the legs.
Main frame 6, can be of any desired construction. As shown, it is rectangular in form, so as to inclose the folded bed frame, and provided with a hinled top wall or cover 16, whereby it can serve as a couch or seat, when the bed is folded therein.
To fold the bed, the operator swings sec-l tion 2, the same swinging on section 3 until studs 9 engage the end walls of slots 8, when the movement. of said section 2 willbe communicated through links 7, 8 to support members 4, 5, causing the latter to swing downwardly into frame 6 to a relatively inf verted position,` during which movement, the support members swinging eccentrically to one another, the joint between sections 1, 3 breaks inwardly. The closed or folded position of the bed frame is reached when sections 1 and 2 come into parallel relation with intermediate section 3 at substantially right angles thereto, see Fig. 3, at which hinged thereto, a pivotal connection be- Signed at Tacoma, Washington this 17th tween one support and one end selction, a day of February 1913.
