Description
S. B. DUNN.
VETERINARY INSTRUMENT.
f/ruenfo r.
UNITED STATES Ii-SEENT orrion.
SOLA B. DUNN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VETERINARY INSTRUMENT.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, Sou. B. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Veterinary Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to veterinary instruments and more particularly to emasculators.
In order to prevent hemorrhages, the jaws of emasculators have heretofore been provided adjacent their cutting edges with cooperating crushing surfaces to lacerate the spermatic cord and thereby close the severed end thereof. Emasculators so constructed do not, however, always prevent hemorrhages, especially in the case of full grown animals, as the pressure of the blood is sufficient to open the crushed portion of the spermatic cord.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an emasculator which will not only crush the spermatic cord adjacent its severed end, but will compress the same immediately above the crushed portion so as to restrict the flow of blood and prevent the pressure thereof from opening the crushed portion of the cord before it is permanently closed by healing.
Another object of my invention is to pro-- vide an improved emasculator having means for compressing the spermatic cord adjacent the severed and crushed end thereof to an extent sufficient to restrict the flow of blood but insufficient to lacerate the cord.
My invention will be more fully disclosed hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the same is illus trated as embodied in a convenient and practical form and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 an elevational view of the jaws in the position they occupy just prior to severing the cord, Fig. 3 a cross-sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the jaws in the position they assume after the cord has been severed.
The same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in several figures of the drawings.
Reference letters A and B designate levers which intersect and are pivotally connected at their point of intersection by any suitable means such, for instance, as a thumb Specification of Letters Patent.

The shorter arms of the levers, are provided with jaws A and B respectively, while the longer arms of the levers, serve as handles for relatively moving the jaws. The jaw A" is slotted longitudinally thereof, and the jaw slot in jaw A and is adapted to oscillate partially theret-hrough, as indicated in Fig. at.
The jaw A is provided with a cutting edge a at one side of the slot therethrough, while the jaw B is provided with a cooperating cutting edge, Z). The jaw A at the opposite side of the slot therethrough from the cutting edge a, is provided with serrations a which form a crushing surface with which cooperates a similar serrated crushing surface o on jaw B.
The jaw A adjacent the crushing surface a is inclined, as shown at a so as to diverge from the adjacent surface of the jaw 13. The surface a is preferably provided with longitudinal serrations, and such surface, together with the adjacent surface of the jaw B serve to exert a graduated compression upon the severed cord, as will be hereinafter described.
In order to vary the degree to which the jaws may be closed, an adjustable set screw D extends through one of the levers adjacent the point of pivotal connection of the levers so as to engage the opposing lever and therelimit their movement toward each other.
The manner of using and operation of my improved emasculator are as follows: The jaws are supported so that the cord which is to be severed is placed between the jaws. The pressure is then applied to the handles to force the jaws toward each other. The jaw B is preferably curved so as to insure the retention of the cord between the jaws while being cut. The functions performed by cooperating cutting edges and surfaces of the jaws, will be readily understood from Figs. 2, 3 and 4. In Figs. 2 and 3, the jaws have approached each other to an extent insufficient to cause the cutting edges a and a? to pass each other and thereby sever the cord. In Fig. 4 the jaws are shown as having been relatively moved sufliciently for the cutting edges a and b to sever the cord. It will be observed that after the cord has been severed, the portion 0 thereof has been lacerated by the cooperating crushing surfaces a and b and that the port-ion c of the cord immediately above the lacerated B extends through the portion of c has been compressed between the diverging pressure surfaces a and Z2 The portion of the cord is, consequently, so compressed as to restrict the flow of blood therethrough and protect the lacerated portion r from the pressure of the blood. By reason of the divergence of the compressing surfaces the portion of the cord which they engage is subjected to a graduated compression and is c imsequently not lacerated, but merely tightly compressed, While the portion of the cord 0 is crushed and lacerated between the abrupt serrated crushing shoulder a on jaw A and the opposing serrated crushing surface 6 on jaw BQ From the foregoing description, it Will be observed that I have invented an improved emasciiilator by the use of which the cord Will not only be severed and crushed adjacent to the severed end but will also be subjected to a graduated pressure adjacent the crushed portion so as to restrict the flow of blood and thereby protect the crushed and lacerated portion of the cord from such pressure as would tend to open the same and permit bleeding.
lVhile I have described more or less in detail the specific form in Which I have illustrated my invention as embodied, yet I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto as I contemplate changes in form, proportion of parts, and substitution of equivalents, as circumstances may require, or as may be deemed expedient.
I claim:
An emasculator comprising relatively movable jaws having cooperating cutting edges and crushing surfaces, one of said aws having its surface adjacent its crushing surface diverging from the adjoining surface of the cooperating jaw.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
